Mobile phones have sensors, processing power, and connectivity that can be harnessed to create a sensor network for social telemetry applications without impacting normal phone usage. The network functions in a peer-to-peer fashion with some phones acting as super nodes to collect and share data via Bluetooth. Location updates, proximity to other devices, and patterns that emerge over time can provide insights even without direct participation. The system was tested and shown to be effective using only basic phone capabilities like Bluetooth and SMS without needing WiFi, GPS, or cellular data.
