23 Things A Manufacturing Engineer
Does 240 Days A Year
Manufacturing engineers are the key to the success of a product being
made on time and with quality.
They understand how the factory floor functions and how to work with
product designers to insure the product is optimized for manufacturability.
There is a lot of emphasis put into the design of a product, but the work
that goes into manufacturing product is much different. Manufacturing
Engineers are a vital part of the marketplace and the products we use
daily.
On any given day a manufacturing engineer is expected to provide
expertise in:
• manufacturing processes
• quality tools
• industrial engineering
• automation technologies
• design
• lean
• process development
Here are 23 things a Manufacturing Engineer does every day at work:
1. Responsible for ensuring that manufacturing is carried out and that the
end product is produced.
2. Focus on the design and operation to produce high-quality products.
3. Responsible for development, design, implementation, and monitoring
of equipment, tools, and machinery used in the manufacturing process.
4. Understand engineering drawings to create plans and instructions.
5. Determine ways to make production more efficient and reliable, while
reducing costs.
6. Detail exactly how to build products with the tools and machinery on
the floor.
7. Mange hourly laborers, assist with questions, problems or issues with
machinery or hardware.
8. Keep production moving no matter what!
9. Program machinery with X, Y, and Z coordinates (i.e. move nozzle,
etc.).
10. Implement process improvements and automation opportunities.
11. Complete a lot of paperwork!
12. Find, research, test and validate new machinery and equipment.
13. Work 9 to 12+ hours a day.
14. Create processes and procedures to meet budgetary goals and
performance quotas.
15. Understand how to increase quantity and reduce cycle time.
16. Know what to do if the right tools are not available for the job.
17. Develop sustainable manufacturing technologies to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions.
18. Minimize raw material use, replace toxic materials with non-toxic
materials, replace non-renewable materials with renewable materials, and
reduce waste.
19. Determine root causes of failures using statistical methods and
recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods.
20. Troubleshoot new or existing product problems involving designs,
materials, or processes.
21. Review product designs for manufacturability and completeness.
22. Communicate manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, or
other information to facilitate production processes.
23. Build cool stuff!
