- 1. Youth Rights It’s All About YOUth August 14, 2021
- 2. The Overcoming Hurdles in Ohio Youth Advisory Board is a statewide organization of young people, ages 14-24, who have experienced foster care. The OHIO YAB exists to be the knowledgeable statewide voice that influences policies and practices that impact youth who have or will experience out of home care.
- 3. Alumni of Care Together Improving Outcomes Now Ohio (ACTION Ohio) is dedicated to improving outcomes for current and former foster care youth. Our membership is primarily comprised of former foster youth, ages 18+. ACTION Ohio initiatives include Thanksgiving Together, Three Days on the Hill, and facilitating the statewide youth advisory board.

- Emmonie @ 12:07 am: The OHIO YAB is the statewide voice of foster youth ages 14-24
- Jaye @ 12:08 am ACTION Ohio is a statewide organization of former foster youth 18+. We facilitate early Thanksgivings for foster youth and annual trips to DC.
- Kaye from 12:10-12:15: Let’s start by talking about Youth Rights together: The Foster Youth Rights Handbook was first created by Ohio foster youth, and is supposed to be given to every youth in foster care. For those of you with a foster care history: 1.) Did you receive a copy? (please let us know in the chat; we want to let ODJFS know if youth aren’t receiving copies) 2.) If you did get a copy, what things were helpful? What things would you want to change? (your feedback matters; and we want to keep track of it for future handbook updates)
- Emmonie from 12:15 – 12:20 Ohio is currently working to establish a Foster Youth Bill of Rights: The OHIO YAB held several focus groups, and this is what we asked for: - Protection from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. - The right to privacy, life skills preparation, visitation with our loved ones, support from adults in our lives. - To be able to be protected from discrimination, provided with resources, and allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities. If you didn’t get those rights in care, we understand – we didn’t either. This is brand-new. We have asked that the Rights be posted in foster homes, group homes and residential facilities in the future.
- Jaye @ 12:20 But rights on paper don’t mean anything, unless there is someone to contact when your rights are violated. You can fill out a grievance procedure, and if you do, please keep track of the date you filed it, and keep a copy for yourself and an adult you trust.
- Emmonie @ 12:21 What we are advocating for, and you can get involved, is to create a Youth Ombudsman Office to listen to and protect youth who are being abused in their biological, foster, adoptive, kinship, respite and group home placements
- Kaye @ 12:25 Current systems are failing because youth are running away from abusive placements and being sent back to them. They are calling abuse hotlines and not being listened to. This office needs to be youth specific because adults have so many other ways to be heard. And because this is necessary to restore youth trust in adults. This office needs to be designed by those with lived experience because we know what it’s like.
