Evolutionof the AutomotiveIndustry
The automotive industry is changing, from the inside and from the
outside. Geneva arrives just in time to bring out the new and fresh
and illuminate these dramatic industry shifts happening or coming
soon.
First are the outside changes. Car ownership is being questioned.
The debate continues about whether or not Millenials want to own
cars at all. Car-sharing services around the globe are making it
easier to not own a car and yet still have the freedom to get where
you want whenever you want. In addition to Zipcar and TravelCar,
technology has allowed owners to rent out the use of their own
cars with services like Lyft and Uber at the touch of a smartphone.
The idea that these services will reduce the number of vehicles
sold is being countered with the belief that more miles will require
vehicles to be turned over more quickly, offsetting the lower buyer
count. And autonomous vehicles, right around the corner, will
bring more potential owners who never wanted to drive into the
market.
Then there’s the continuing rumor that we simply have too many
car companies. With Chinese firms looking to export, players in
each market will need to cede some market share as new brands
enter. GAC and Geely have openly shown their export models
while electric startups pop up every few minutes with billions of
investor capital looking to become the latest Tesla miracle. New
producers from the East are running straight into Europe where
the world’s third largest automaker is getting out.
To top all of the other stories, General Motors and PSA Groupe
opened the Geneva show with the announcement that the
perpetually loss-making Opel and Vauxhall brands would move to
PSA in exchange for US$2.3 billion. PSA, who not too long ago
was on the ropes, has made a tremendous comeback and is now
ready for the heavyweight matches. Already a big player in China
and third place in Europe, PSA wants to tackle North America and
grow its share of Europe while reducing its per vehicle costs.
Adding Opel/Vauxhall might look like a large burden to bear, but
harnessing some EV technology and adding market share will
prepare PSA for the electric future and spread the costs across
more models as the company moves into second place among
European-based manufacturers.
A new industry is coming with Geneva in the middle of it. From the
Asian EV startups to next-generation autonomous vehicles, the
future is on display and it’s right around the corner.

2017 European Car of the Year

From the initial forty vehicles, the list was narrowed down to a final seven: Alfa Romeo Giulia, Citroen C3, Mercedes-Benz E-
Class, Nissan Micra, Peugeot 3008, Toyota C-HR, Volvo S90/V90. Judges from 22 European countries narrowed that list down
to just one. Selected this year was the hot-selling Peugeot 3008 crossover. Second place went to FCA’s Alfa Romeo Giulia.

2018 Abarth 595 Pista
Sporting the 160hp 1.4L turbo engine, the 595 Pista (“track” in Italian) can zip to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. The package
includes a telemetry system that features information about some of the world’s most famous racetracks.

2017 AC Schnitzer i8
German tuner AC Schnitzer took the already light and sporty i8 and made it lighter by increasing its carbon fiber content.
Larger wheels (20” in the front, 21” in the rear) actually reduced the car’s weight by another 10 lbs. a lowered suspension adds
to its sporty character.

Loaded with technology, Aston Martin’s latest DB11 edition fits a twin-turbo V12 under the nose while advertising the Q
division which allows owners to create the sports car of their dreams. The concept shows off the Zaffre Blue paint and carbon
fiber trim.

2018 Audi RS3 Sportback
Starting with Audi’s little A3 Sportback, the RS treatment adds in horsepower and lots of it. This Quattro version puts 400hp
through all four wheels to take on Europe’s hot hatch crowd. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) comes up in 4.1 seconds.

2018 Audi RS5 Coupe
The 2.9L twin-turbo V6 powering the second-generation RS5 Coupe was developed in cooperation with Porsche and produces
444hp (and is shared with the Porsche Panamera S). Mated to a dual-clutch 8-speed transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive,
the RS5 scoots to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds.

2017 Audi RS Q8 Concept
Audi’s sporty crossover will get an even more sporty RS version shortly after production begins for the new Q8. To compete,
the production RS Q8 will boast over 600hp from its twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 and utilizing the brand’s ubiquitous Quattro all-
wheel drive system.

Bentley’s first crossover is so popular, Bentley needed to find ways to charge more. The Mulliner edition allows buyers to spec
out an even more luxurious Bentayga.

2018 Bentley Continental Supersports
Pushing the envelope even higher for the Continental coupe with more power. The 6.0L W12 with its two turbochargers now
kicks out 700hp, taking the car from a stand-still to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and continuing on up to 336 km/h (209
mph).

2018 BMW 4-Series
Modest facelift of the 4-Series in coupe, convertible and 4-door Gran Coupe body styles. New headlights, taillights, and lower
front fascia set the 2018 apart from the earlier models. Lights are now all LEDs and the suspension is now stiffer for a more
sporting feel. Engines, transmissions, and trim levels all remain unchanged.

German tuning company Brabus worked its magic on the C-Class convertible, boosting output of the AMG 4.0L V8 from 510hp

Replacing the Citroen C3 Picasso people carrier will be the production version of this new crossover. While Citroen has been on
the cutting edge of car-truck hybrids with the likes of the Picasso, the brand is catching up in the field of car-based SUVs. The C-

2018 DS7 Crossback
Joining the DS lineup in early 2018, the DS7 Crossback targets the Audi Q5 and BMW X1. All wheel drive versions sport an
electric motor powering the rear wheels, eliminating the need for a driveshaft. Four powertrain choices (130hp, 180hp, 230hp,
and hybrid) with the choice of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transaxles.

2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast
Front-engined and V12-powered, the 812 Superfast replaces the outgoing F12 Berlinetta. Under the hood lies a 6.5L engine
producing 789hp and 560 ft-lbs of torque without the aid of turbocharging or supercharging.

2017 Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo
Yet another car in the Sony PlayStation-inspired series, the Fittipaldi stands apart with actual production planned for the
Pininfarina-designed supercar. Development used technology from Mercedes-Benz and German specialty tuner HWA. A
naturually aspirated V8 kicks out over 600hp pushing a carbon fiber vehicle weighing about 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs).

2017 Hybrid Kinetic H600
Financed by Hong Kong’s HK Motors and designed by Pininfarina, the Hybrid Kinetic H600 uses a graphene battery and a
turbine range extender to power its electric motors. This new battery design is expected to generate more energy than typical
lithium-ion batteries. The car has a claimed 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 2.9 seconds and a range of 1,000 km (612 miles).

Based on the Infiniti Q60 coupe, the “Project Black S” takes what Infiniti and Renault have learned in Formula One and

2017 Italdesign Zerouno
Audi owns Italdesign and is using the brand for a line of limited-edition exotics. The Zerouno, Italdesign’s first model and
related to the Audi R8, will be produced in a run of only five priced at €1.5 million (US$1.6 million), powered by Audi’s 5.2L
V10. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) is said to take only 3.2 seconds. Future models are expected to follow every two years
or so.

2017 Jaguar I-Pace Concept
Just a concept, but the I-Pace previews the production version that will hit the streets in early 2018. Jaguar’s first electric
model features 400hp and 516 ft-lbs of torque which will propel the I-Pace to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. Fully charged, the 90
kWh battery pack will allow the Jaguar to travel 220 miles, and an 80% charge takes just 90 minutes.

2018 Koeniggsegg Regera
The pride and joy of Sweden, if you don’t count Volvo or what’s left of Saab, Koeniggsegg produces some of the fastest and
most expensive cars in the world. Their newest model is the Regera, complete with its 1,500hp hybrid powertrain mated to a
hydraulic system that replaces the transmission. One of two cars shown at Geneva is decked out in a spectacular green carbon
fiber body with a tan leather interior.

2018 Lamborghini Aventador S
Lamborghini’s senior model gets a power boost. The 6.5L V12 gets revised valve timing, improved exhaust, and cylinder
deactivation which combines for 730hp. To get that power to the ground, the suspension features magnetic dampers, four-
wheel steering, and the sequential transmission is connected to all four wheels.

2018 Lexus LS 500h
Following the debut of the new twin-turbo Lexus LS 500 at NAIAS, Lexus introduced the hybrid version at Geneva. Losing the
turbochargers, the LS 500h mates a 3.5L V6 engine to two electric motors and a CVT, improving the car’s fuel economy and
boosting its power.

Ready to tackle the IMSA Sports Car Championship, two RC F GT3 racers have been built. Fresh from its 2016 endurance
championship, the 2017 Lexus has a new 5.4L 500hp V8 mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission.

2018 McLaren 720S
Developed as the “Super Series” and under the program code P14, the McLaren 720S replaces the 650S line. Updated, the
McLaren 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 now produces 710hp. Unique to the 720S is the Folding Driver Display that allows the
gauge cluster to fold flat, providing just the necessary information and a clearer view of the road or track.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon
The AMG treatment has been added to the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. In this form, the AMG 4.0L twin-turbocharged
V8 generates 603hp and 627 ft-lbs of torque. With its 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the wagon shoots to
60mph in 3.4 seconds.

This limited edition member of the GT lineup is the C Roadster. Its 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 produces 550hp and 502 ft-lbs of
torque allowing it to accelerate to 60mph in just 3.7 seconds. Top speed of this topless beast is 196mph.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT4
Taking on the Porsche Panamera, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 adds a more practical body style to the GT lineup. The AMG 4.0L
twin-turbo V8 from the coupe and convertible produces 503hp in the GT4. Production is expected to begin in June 2018.

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet
Following the introductions of the sedan, wagon, and coupe, Mercedes-Benz’ E-Class gains the convertible as well. No
surprises in the powertrain department where the Cabriolet borrows engines and 9-speed transmission from the sedan
including the 329hp twin-turbo 3.0L V6.

South America and Europe alongside Nissan pickups starting in September 2017.

2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650
Based on the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen, the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet stretches out for more rear seat
passenger space as well as opening the roof for even more head room. Under the hood of this four-wheel drive SUV is a very
high performance 621hp AMG twin-turbo V12 engine. Only 99 will be built. Pricing comes in around €500,000 (US$550,000) for
that kind of exclusivity.

2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
Positioned between the larger Outlander and slightly smaller Outlander Sport, the new Eclipse Cross adds to Mitsubishi’s
crossover lineup. All-wheel drive is standard while power comes from a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder with a CVT or a 2.2L
turbodiesel mated to an 8-speed automatic.

Nissan’s latest version of the triangular BladeGlider concept features a 268hp electric motor with a 220 kWh battery pack
providing enough oomph for acceleration to 100 km/h in under five seconds and a top speed of 118 mph while providing room
for three.

2018 Nissan Qashqai
Updated small crossover will feature the obligatory refreshed grille, lights, and bumpers, but the big news is in the technology.
Nissan hopes to roll out semi-autonomous technology throughout its lineup and the Qashqai will be the first to get Piloted
Drive 1.0 which will control the vehicle’s throttle, brakes, and steering in some cases.

2018 Opel Insignia Sports Tourer
Opel (and Vauxhall) has restyled its largest sedan and now wagon. Longer by 3.6 inches and roomier inside with 3.6 cubic feet
more cargo room, the new wagon seems tailored for European buyers. The redesign stretches the wheels to the corners and
removes as much a 440 pounds. Power comes from a range of turbocharged gas or diesel four-cylinder engines and all-wheel
drive is available. It could cross the Atlantic as the Buick Regal.

2017 Peugeot Instinct Concept
Peugeot’s take on where the autonomous future will take the automotive industry, the Instinct is no larger than a compact car
but it puts out 300hp. Steering wheel and pedals in this two-seater retract when the car takes over the driving. Peugeot does
not expect to have a civilian autonomous car available before 2025.

2018 Porsche 911 GT3
Arguably the ultimate Porsche 911, the latest iteration of the GT3 gets back to its roots. For 2018, the GT3 supplements the
dual-clutch PDK transmission with a proper manual 6-speed manual. Power comes from a 500hp version of the traditional flat-
six. Weight is under 3,200 lbs. Acceleration to 60 mph takes less than 4 seconds and the car tops out just under 200 mph.

2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo
Adding one more body style to the Panamera’s lineup of sedan and long-wheelbase executive sedan is the Sport Turismo. For
those who were offended when Porsche introduced its first SUV, you’re really not going to like the idea of Porsche’s first
station wagon. No longer or taller than the standard sedan, the Sport Turismo also shares most engine and driveline choices
from the base 330hp to the 550hp turbo and all but the newest turbo hybrid system.

2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid
Powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo 550hp gasoline engine and 136hp electric motor (with its 14.1 kWh lithium-ion batteries), the
new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid will accelerate to 60mph in just 3.2 second, continuing on to a top speed of 193 mph. All-
wheel drive is fed by a dual-clutch, 8-speed PDK transmission. An Executive version offers a 5.9-inch longer wheelbase for
more rear seat room.

2018 Range Rover Velar
Based on the Jaguar F-Pace’s platform, the Range Rover Velar takes its name from original Range Rover prototypes. It will be
positioned between the entry-level Evoque and the upper mid-range Sport. Power will come from V6 gas or JLR’s Ingenium
engine family including gas and diesel four-cylinders. Targets include the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the BMW X3. Regular
production begins in April 2017.

2017 RUF CTR
Europe has some outstanding tuners and Geneva is the place to see their latest wares. RUF has been tuning Porsches for four
decades and the CTR is the latest with its retro 911 body work and dedicated chassis. This is not simply a tuned Porsche but a
ground-up RUF with a 700hp 3.6L flat six out back and a package weight of just 2,640 lbs combining for acceleration to 100
km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of about 225 mph.

2017 Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus
One-off street-legal race car designed by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus and built in Italy, the 800hp SCG003S is claimed to be
able to pull 2g through a turn, acceleration to 100km/h (62 mph) in under three seconds and power on to 350 km/h (217 mph).

2018 SEAT Ibiza
Europe’s supermini segment features many competitive models and SEAT’s Ibiza is a very strong player. The latest generation is
offered only in this roomy five-door body style and comes with a range of powertrain options including 1.0L and 1.5L gas

2018 Spyker C8 Preliator Spyder
The Netherlands’ only domestic car brand brings out the convertible version of its latest model, the C8 Preliator. For the new
model, the previous supercharged 518hp 4.2L Audi V8 has been replaced by the Koenigsegg 5.0L naturally-aspirated V8 which
kicks out nearly 600hp. While Spyker isn’t the fastest or quickest car in its price range, somewhere above $430,000, it is one of
the most ornate and intricately hand-crafted vehicles available.

South Korea’s Ssangyong is working on a lineup to tackle the world. The latest concept showcases a 7-passenger version of the
company’s latest Tivoli. The production version will be marketed as the Rexton II.

2018 Subaru XV
Subaru’s hit compact crossover moves into its second generation. The XV keeps the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
putting the power from its direct-injection four-cylinder engine to the ground. A hybrid version will also be available.

Suzuki’s popular Swift gets all new bodywork and a new 1.4L turbo four, putting out 140hp in both front-drive and all-wheel

2018 TAMO Racemo
India’s Tata is looking to the world stage and the TAMO sub-brand is part of that plan. A sports car built on a new modular
platform, the Racemo, with its mid-mounted 1.2L three-cylinder engine, has the ability to shoot to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less
than 6 seconds. It will be featured in the videogame Forza Horizon 3.

2017 Techrules Ren
This Fabrizio Giugiaro-designed, Chinese-financed supercar is said to be built in Italy with no more than 96 emerging from the
factory. All-wheel drive, the car is listed as a “turbine-recharging electric vehicle” producing 1,287hp and running 124 miles on
only batteries or over 700 miles with a full tank of diesel (among other fuels it could possibly use).

2017 Toyota i-TRIL concept Another of Toyota’s concepts to
answer the transportation needs
of the near future, the i-TRIL is an
EV for around town commuting. It
is advertised as an alternative to
small (A- and B-segment) cars as
well as for motorcycles or even
public transportation. A lack of
pedals moves all driver controls
to the hands, when the driver
wants to control it; even the
instrument panel has been
replaced by heads-up displays.
Allowing for the possibility of
autonomous driving, the i-TRIL
can carry three passengers in a
pinch and travel up to 120 miles
on a charge. At less than 3 meters
long, it can be driven and parked
anywhere.

2018 Toyota Yaris GRMN
This hopped-up subcompact Yaris adds a supercharger to its 1.8L four-cylinder nearly doubling the output to around 200hp.
The name comes from Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nurburgring WRC team.

2018 Volvo XC60
The second generation Volvo XC60 will roll off of the assembly lines May 2017 and will ride on Volvo’s modular SPA platform.
As with the other new-generation Volvos, power comes from a range of four-cylinder engines offered in turbocharged,
turbo/supercharged, and hybrid versions. New features including Volvo’s City Safety package move the XC60 closer to
autonomy and closer to the promise of a zero collision future.

Based in Denmark, Zenvo has been producing supercars since 2008. For their tenth anniversary, the company has released the
TS1 GT Anniversary Spec with its 5.9L twin-supercharged V8 generating an estimated 1100hp and powering the car to a top
speed of 375 km/h (233 mph).
