became both a lifestyle and career for most.

for them to implement to attract users.

Creation of Social Media × Social Media Began with the Social Networking Site called “Six Degrees” × Social Media then branched off into Instant Messaging and Blogging. × The Social Media Surge of 2003 began with Myspace × Facebook soon took that spot as the top social media site in 2008 and still holds its position Social Media started off as an internet activity and became both a lifestyle and career for most.

The Benefits... × You get to see your target audience, up close and personal. × You can respond to problems immediately. × Your competition is Tweeting and Facebooking like crazy. × People are receptive to your messages. × It will get you more sales. × You will find customers you didn’t know existed × Customers you didn’t know existed will find (and buy from) you (for business and selling items). × It’s free!

Facebook and Twitter × In 2005, the most popular and game changing social media sites were Facebook and Twitter. × Facebook reached 1,645,991,400 visits a year. × Twitter reached 187,147,521 visits a year. Both social media sites led the way for other social media sites such as instagram and linkedin by providing a sample platform and marketing strategy for them to implement to attract users.
  • 8. Social media today consists of thousands of social media platforms, all serving the same – but slightly different purpose. Of course, some social media platforms are more popular than others, so some will be recognized over the others. Social Media Today Business & Personal Social media today is used for both business and personal uses. There are some jobs that specialize in watching over social media. Personal uses of social media are implemented to build personal brands and voice opinions.

Do you miss? × There are many aspects of social media that had became second nature to people × Choosing your own personal username and icon × Spending hours customising your profile × Choosing your top friends × Coming home, rushing to the computer to see who’s online × Sending the wrong messages to your crush. × Getting caught up in insane group chats × Sending nudges and winks over MSN × Appearing offline to avoid someone × Tom on MySpace × Agonising over the perfect song to feature on your MySpace profile × Having an online friend you didn’t know in real life
  • 10. Social Media Sites Don’t Last Forever In order to create a long lasting social media site, you must have a great marketing platform, a continuously fresh audience, and great visual appeal.
  • 11. Social Media Sites Lost to History The Open Diary First social media blogging site like Tumblr. Launched in 1998, it finally shut down in 2015, running over 15 years. Friendster A social media site that disappeared around 2009. It’s primary focus was targeted towards young adults. Myspace Although not technically lost, Myspace isn’t the social media site it used to be. Now under new management, myspace is a music hosting website for artists and more.
  • 12. Social Media TimeLine Social Media has developed over time leaving behind older websites to make room for newer and creative constructs.
  • 16. Social Media impacts the mindset of society by bringing light to unforeseen issues and swaying one’s judgement. Even if the spark is small, it will still make an impact.

Statistics × 86% of internet users have taken steps online to remove or mask their digital footprints × 68% of internet users believe current laws are not good enough in protecting people’s privacy online. × 59% of internet users do not believe it is possible to be completely anonymous online. × 55% of internet users have taken steps to avoid observation by specific people, organizations, or the government. × 21% of internet users have had an email or social networking account compromised or taken over by someone else without permission.

Statistics Continued × 12% of internet users have been stalked or harassed online. × 11% have had important personal information stolen such as their Social Security Number, credit card, or bank account information. × 6% have had their reputation damaged because of something that happened online. × 6% of internet users have been the victim of an online scam and lost money. × 1% of internet users have lost a job opportunity or educational opportunity because of something they posted online or someone posted about them.
