AWS re:Invent 2016: Encryption: It Was the Best of Controls, It Was the Worst...Amazon Web Services
Encryption is a favorite of security and compliance professionals everywhere. Many compliance frameworks actually mandate encryption. Though encryption is important, it is also treacherous. Cryptographic protocols are subtle, and researchers are constantly finding new and creative flaws in them. Using encryption correctly, especially over time, also is expensive because you have to stay up to date.
AWS wants to encrypt data. And our customers, including Amazon, want to encrypt data. In this talk, we look at some of the challenges with using encryption, how AWS thinks internally about encryption, and how that thinking has informed the services we have built, the features we have vended, and our own usage of AWS.

This is a presentation made at the Burlington, Vermont PHP Users Group about configuring load balancing using the Apache HTTP Server. Load balancing is a technique that can distribute work across multiple server nodes—here we will discuss load balancing HTTP (i.e. web) traffic. There are many software and hardware load balancing options available including HAProxy, Varnish, Pound, Perlbal, Squid, nginx, and Linux-HA (High-Availability Linux) on Linux Standard Base (LSB). However, many web developers are already familiar with Apache as a web server and it is relatively easy to also configure Apache as a load balancer.
Related concepts such as shared nothing architecture are discussed. We also take a look at some basic load balancing scenarios and features including sticky sessions and proxying requests based on HTTP method. Distributed load testing with Tsung is briefly discussed as well.
A guide to deploying an initial Docker Swarm mode network and then incorporating Asterisk into that swarm. Commands, a discussion of host mode vs overlay networking, and the basics of a deployable Docker Swarm mode Stack file are all covered.

Reaching 5 Million Messaging Connections: Our Journey with KubernetesConnected
Learn how we built a high-scale messaging service and state store on Kubernetes. The solution supports millions of persistent, concurrent connections; enables tens of thousands of messages per second; is globally addressable; stores millions of states; and responds with minimal latency (<250ms).
To evaluate build approaches, the team split into Makers & Breakers. Makers developed the solution stack while Breakers focused on repurposing Locust, a high-scale load testing framework, to simulate behavior. Leveraging the flexibility of Kubernetes, we were able to scale the stack and solve blockers on the path to a viable solution. Blockers included ingress, file descriptors, service discovery and resource limits. The experience was deeply educational, generating key learnings for developers tasked with building a scaled solution on top of Kubernetes.
OSMC 2009 | Monitoring and IPv6 by Benedikt StockebrandtNETWAYS
Monitoring and IPv6 interact with each other in a number of ways far from obvious. After a quick review of IPv6 from the monitoring perspective, these questions are addressed:
How do monitoring systems use IPv6 for communications between servers and agents? Why can't Ssh entirely hide IPv6 from monitoring tools like Nagios?
What additional services do we have to monitor in an IPv6 environment? How are existing services affected once IPv6 is enabled, and how do we have to update our monitoring configurations? Which plugins may need an update?
How can we support IPv6 in an existing environment if we don't want to move the running monitoring setup out of its IPv4-only environment? What are our options with regard to protocol-translating proxies and how do they compare to each other?
Finally, IPv6 offers a number of features that may be useful for new monitoring tool developments---it isn't all just extra work. The talk closes with a few thoughts on what IPv6 has to offer with regard to monitoring.
This talk is about the issues with parallel transactions in relational databases: anomalies, locks, isolation levels, and how to work with this in JDBC and JPA.

Wireshark is the de facto network packet analysis tool used in the industry today. It is an easily extensible open–source tool that provides a large number of capabilities for users. It’s not just for IT–based protocols either. Many industrial protocols have created packet decoders for Wireshark. This tutorial will provide the user with:
* An introduction to protocol layering
* A basic overview of packet capture and analysis
* A demonstration of how Wireshark can be used for packet capture and analysis
* Examples of some industrial protocol in Wireshark
* An explanation of some more advanced features available in Wireshark

Automated Acceptance Testing (and tool choice)
Automated acceptance testing has many names: acceptance-test driven development (ATDD), story-test driven development (STDD), agile acceptance testing and, most recently, specification by example. At the heart of all these approaches is to produce business-facing tests which are system tests running end-to-end, picking up regression issues and improving confidence that the code works as required.
In this talk, I will contextualise how each of these approaches share in common a three-tier layering strategy: acceptance criteria, test implementation layer and application driver layer. This is important because applying this approach requires a tool choice and each tool tends to have its own sweet (and blind) spot that is best understood through these layers.
I will first deep dive into sample code across a few tools (Cucumber, Fitnesse, Concordion) to illustrate this layering. I use an example that shows how to decouple the GUI from tests (window driver pattern).
Finally, I will look at some typical client scenarios to examine which tools might best suited because tool choice is not simply a host operating system question (.Net, Java, Ruby).
Rspec and Capybara Intro Tutorial at RailsConf 2013Brian Sam-Bodden
Behavior-Driven Development and Acceptance Testing are heavily intertwined and in many aspects are one and the same. Both focus on starting at the outer layers of your application by concentrating on what matter to users; behavior. In this session/workshop we'll talk about how testing can be used both for specifying your application yet to be develop expected behavior and as accurate, running documentation that can be used to validate your stakeholder's acceptance criteria. We'll talk about the different types of testing and do a few hands-on exercises to flesh out a Rails application with RSpec and Capybara.
