Open Ethernet: an open-source approach to modern network designAlexander Petrovskiy
The era of closed proprietary hardware platforms is coming to an end. Today, in the world of Web-scale IT, the industry is starting to adopt new approach, based on the principles of openness, scalabilty and customizability. However, in more conservative networking industry, traditional equipment and proprietary technologies from a single vendor are often being used, which limits the flexibility, prevents innovation and narrows down the choice.
The "Open Ethernet" initiative from Mellanox brings open source principles into the world of modern networking and allows customers to select the best hardware and software to design network infrastructure, based on open and standard protocols and technologies, also opening the way for broad adoption of SDN.

Building world class data centers, presented by Mellanox at Ceph Day, June 10, 2014. This event was dedicated to sharing Ceph’s transformative power and fostering the vibrant Ceph community. Hosted by InkTank and HGST
Many analysts predict that 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) is ready to take off in HPC environments. 10GbE can meet low-latency and high bandwidth I/O requirements using familiar Ethernet networking leveraging Ethernet training, and management and debugging tools, which are ubiquitous in networking. Using efficient and cost-effective 10GbE to interconnect the blade servers, HPC clusters can take advantage of dense blade-server compute nodes to lower power consumption and reduce floor space.
Test Tool for Industrial Ethernet Network Performance (June 2009)Jim Gilsinn
Presented @ 55th International Instrumentation Symposium
League City, Texas, 1–5 June 2009
Ethernet is being used by a wider variety of industrial devices and applications. Industrial applications and systems require deterministic operations that traditional Ethernet and Transport Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suites were not originally designed to support. A standardized way to describe and test industrial devices is needed in order to aid users to characterize the performance of their software and hardware applications.
The Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL) of the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) has been working to develop a set of standardized network performance metrics, tests, and tools since 2002. NIST has cooperated with standards organizations and other groups during that time.
NIST is presently working on developing an open-source test tool, called Industrial Ethernet Network Performance (IENetP), to aid vendors in characterizing the performance of their devices. The IENetP test tool will be capable of conducting a full series of performance tests and reporting the results to the user. The current version of the software is capable of analyzing network traffic and producing statistics and graphs showing the network performance of a device.
A Tale of Two OpenStack Contributors: A Newbie Developer and a Frustrated Ope...Cloud Native Day Tel Aviv
OpenStack is a community. It takes a community to develop such a massive ecosystem, but the sheer size of it also presents a barrier. This session will present two aspects of OpenStack Contributions.
From a Developer's perspective you will learn how to make your first OpenStack contribution, from your creating your account to identifying low hanging fruits, or even trying to push a new project to the ecosystem.
From the Operator's perspective, we have not yet reached the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Operators are still not yet accepted as equal members of the OpenStack community. We will go over some of the history, current issues, what is considered a contribution to OpenStack, and how this should, and can change.
OpenStack and OVS: From Love-Hate to Match Made in HeavenOPNFV
Many OPNFV developers building Openstack clouds at scale have a “love-hate” relationship with OVS. They love the flexibility and elasticity offered by a distributed virtual switch operating within each server, but hate the reality of first-gen OVS implementations well-known to be a bottleneck for cloud network performance and scalability. As performance-sensitive VNFs keep pushing for higher data forwarding performance across the NFV network infrastructure, it becomes critical to improve OVS performance without compromising flexibility, network programmability, and cost.
In this session, Mellanox will present a novel way to offload the entire OVS dataplane onto the embedded switch in the server NIC. This approach can not only boost server I/O performance to near line-rate, be it 10G, 40G, or 100G, but also doing so at a fraction of the CPU load needed by existing OVS implementation.

Advanced Networking: The Critical Path for HPC, Cloud, Machine Learning and moreinside-BigData.com
In this deck from the 2018 Swiss HPC Conference, Erez Cohen from Mellanox presents: Advanced Networking: The Critical Path for HPC, Cloud, Machine Learning and more.
"While InfiniBand, RDMA and GPU-Direct are an HPC mainstay, these advanced networking technologies are increasingly becoming a core differentiator to the data center. In fact, within just a few short years so far, where only a handful of bleeding edge industrial leaders emulated classic HPC disciplines, today almost every commercial market is usurping HPC technologies and disciplines in mass. Additionally, with the rampant adoption of demanding workloads like Machine Learning, cloud to on premise providers are now deploying the same advanced networking technologies and delivering the same core capabilities and performance as traditional HPC environments. These same data centers embracing AI are also driving the increased adoption of complex technologies including containers and virtualization that must also be optimized for performance, optimal profit and operational efficiency. In this talk we explore how high performance networking has emerged from HPC to become the critical path for the cloud, machine learning and much more."

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
