Networking For Nested Containers: Magnum, Kuryr, Neutron IntegrationFawad Khaliq
In the OpenStack ecosystem, containers were introduced as first class citizens recently with the project Magnum and the networking for containers has also evolved since then. Project Kuryr makes networking available to containers through Neutron. This all brings together how Neutron networking benefits containers like it does virtual machines. However, to make Neutron, Kuryr and Magnum cover all the use cases for containers, nested containers inside Nova VMs require networking to work as seamlessly as it works for virtual machines or bare metal containers. In this session, we will talk about Magnum, Kuryr, Neutron integration and how the problem of nested container networking has been solved in the OpenStack community, it's architecture, the design, current status and next steps.

OpenStack As A Strategy For Future Growth at CiscoLew Tucker
Cisco's adoption of OpenStack. Cisco Systems joined the OpenStack community in early 2011 and since then, OpenStack has been adopted by several different business and product teams. This is how we made it possible.
1. Networking is undergoing a third major transition driven by cloud computing, mobile devices, and software-defined networking.
2. Applications are becoming distributed across private and public clouds, making the application the new network as IT departments lose control over hardware.
3. The rise of containers is pushing networking down to the application level, requiring new approaches for provisioning, troubleshooting, and security at this more granular level.
The document discusses Neutron and SDN (Software Defined Networking) as solutions to problems with managing complex and dynamic data center networks. Neutron is OpenStack's networking component, which uses SDN approaches like OpenFlow to provide logical network abstractions and flexible virtual network configuration. SDN allows network policies to be programmed centrally and automated, improving network provisioning, management, and response to failures or changes. When combined with Neutron and an SDN controller like OpenDaylight, this enables on-demand, software-defined network services for OpenStack clouds.

Upgrading Your Firewall? Its Time for an Inline Security FabricRahul Neel Mani
An inline security fabric can provide benefits over traditional firewall deployments by reducing network downtime, increasing security tool efficiency, and improving inspection and security monitoring. An inline security fabric uses high-availability network packet brokers and bypass switches to intelligently route traffic across security tools, load balance traffic to extend tool life, and ensure redundancy so there are no single points of failure. This eliminates disruptions from tool failures or upgrades while improving security resilience.

SDN and NFV both aim to virtualize and commoditize network hardware to reduce costs and increase flexibility. SDN separates the control plane from the data plane to allow centralized control of network behavior via software. NFV virtualizes network functions like firewalls and load balancers that were traditionally hardware appliances. Both seek to standardize networking functions through open source projects and standards bodies like ONF for SDN and ETSI for NFV. Major implementations include OpenStack for virtual infrastructure, OpenDaylight as an SDN controller, and OpenFlow as the SDN protocol. While complementary, SDN and NFV face challenges around vendor support and complexity that could slow wide adoption.
SDN and NFV both aim to virtualize and commoditize network hardware to reduce costs and increase flexibility.
