In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch explains to the children that it’s a sin to kill a
mockingbird. He explains that mockingbirds don’t do anything except sing. Meaning they don’t bother
anyone and simply create music for everyone to enjoy, therefore it would wrong to harm them. As we
continue to read in the novel, we will find that several characters in the story present themselves as
metaphoric mockingbirds. They are innocent individuals who are persecuted based on rumors and other
people’s false impressions. Throughout history and even today, many groups of people have been
persecuted based on their religious, political, sexual, or ethnic affiliations. You will research one of these
groups and present the information to our class.
With your partner(s) choose a group of people who have been persecuted.
You MUST use at least 3 DIFFERENT Sources in your research.
Find details and answers to the following questions:
1. Who is the group? How many of them were persecuted?
2. When did this take place? Where did it take place? What was happening in the world when this
occurred?
3. What type of persecution occurred? Why did it occur? By whom? How did others react?
4. What is the end result? Any law/policy changes? What’s happening with the group today?
Write 2 multiple choice quiz questions about facts presented in your presentation that will then be
used in a final quiz assessing how well students listened to presentations. You will turn this paper
in to your teacher before you present.

 FIRST SLIDE: introduction- Introduce topic, names of presenters, and at least one relevant image.
 3-6 SLIDES: information about the history and facts surrounding the topic:
o The groups Demographics: who were they? How many?
o Persecution: What type? Why? Who were the persecutors? Reactions?
o Historical Context: When did it occur? Where? What was happening in the world at the
time?
o Conclusion: End result?
 Slide 7: Two multiple choice questions WITHOUT the answers (these should be the same
questions you turn in)
 LAST SLIDE: list of ALL sources (Bibliography) for the project using correct MLA format.

Project Synopsis:
You will work in pairs to research and present to the class information about a
group of people who have been persecuted in history.
You and your partner will do research in the library as well as in the computer lab.
You will take notes on your research and keep a bibliography of all sources
investigated. The notes will not be collected; however, the bibliography will be
graded.
You and your partner will create a PowerPoint slide presentation to present
information about your topic.
Presentations will be at least FIVE minutes in length.
The class will take a test on the presentations using notes taken during the
presentations as study guides.

To Kill a Mockingbird 2014

  • 1. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch explains to the children that it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. He explains that mockingbirds don’t do anything except sing. Meaning they don’t bother anyone and simply create music for everyone to enjoy, therefore it would wrong to harm them. As we continue to read in the novel, we will find that several characters in the story present themselves as metaphoric mockingbirds. They are innocent individuals who are persecuted based on rumors and other people’s false impressions. Throughout history and even today, many groups of people have been persecuted based on their religious, political, sexual, or ethnic affiliations. You will research one of these groups and present the information to our class. With your partner(s) choose a group of people who have been persecuted. You MUST use at least 3 DIFFERENT Sources in your research. Find details and answers to the following questions: 1. Who is the group? How many of them were persecuted? 2. When did this take place? Where did it take place? What was happening in the world when this occurred? 3. What type of persecution occurred? Why did it occur? By whom? How did others react? 4. What is the end result? Any law/policy changes? What’s happening with the group today? Write 2 multiple choice quiz questions about facts presented in your presentation that will then be used in a final quiz assessing how well students listened to presentations. You will turn this paper in to your teacher before you present. -Typed on a single sheet of paper. Provide the correct answer. Preparation Amount of information collected and presented is sufficient for time allotted to this project. All images and information is cited correctly. _____/6 Organization Students present information in logical, interesting sequence which audience can follow. _____/5 Subject Knowledge Students demonstrate full knowledge by elaborating on topic with specific and accurate details. Students answer any class questions with explanations. All 4 research questions have been thoroughly answered. _____/10 Visual Aids Students’ visual aids (at least 1 image/slide) effectively reinforce the presentation. _____/6 Mechanics Presentation has no misspellings or grammatical errors. _____/4 Presentation All group members present information. Students maintain eye contact with audience, seldom returning to notes. Presentation is obviously well prepared and rehearsed. There are no more than 10 words/slide. Students are not directly reading from the slides!! _____/5 Verbal Techniques Students use a clear voice and correct, precise pronunciation of terms so that all audience members can hear and understand presentation. Rehearsal is evident. _____/4  
  • 2. You (and your partners) will prepare a 5-8 minute Power Point Presentation: 6-8 SLIDES: NO MORE THAN 10 WORDS PER SLIDE. EACH SLIDE SHOULD CONTAIN IMAGES TO HELP THE AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND YOUR PREPARED PRESENTATION.  FIRST SLIDE: introduction- Introduce topic, names of presenters, and at least one relevant image.  3-6 SLIDES: information about the history and facts surrounding the topic: o The groups Demographics: who were they? How many? o Persecution: What type? Why? Who were the persecutors? Reactions? o Historical Context: When did it occur? Where? What was happening in the world at the time? o Conclusion: End result?  Slide 7: Two multiple choice questions WITHOUT the answers (these should be the same questions you turn in)  LAST SLIDE: list of ALL sources (Bibliography) for the project using correct MLA format.  NO full sentences on the slides! How to create a Bibliography for your sources You will present your Bibliography as the last slide in your presentation AND you will turn in a bibliography page to your teacher.  You may create your bibliography using Noodletools or Microsoft References or any other resource that you are familiar with.  The Bibliography page must be correctly formatted in MLA format.  You will NOT need to turn in your notes. How to turn in your Presentation: You and your partner(s) will hand in your completed Presentation via the Hand-in Folder on the CHS computers.  Save your work using your names separated by periods: For example, if John, Dave and Miles worked on a project together, they would save their work as: john.dave.miles.pptx  Go to the Hand-In Folder, Rahmati, find your period number.  Copy/paste your work into the folder.  Check with your teacher to make sure the work is saved correctly and can be opened from that location.
