During the third quarter of FY13: - A parent-child reunification training video was created featuring footage from CHS drills. - Several staff participated in webinars and conferences focused on circulation systems and library technologies. - Small groups used the media center daily for instruction and assessment. - 145 videos were borrowed by faculty to supplement instruction.

Miller discusses the ways in which our beliefs about learning and research — and the role librarians can play in those processes — are symbolized in the ways we choose to plan and design library spaces. Drawing on her experiences at UVA, UCLA and the University of Miami, she will share examples of library space planning and renewal that are creating new opportunities for librarians to engage in new ways with faculty and students. In particular, she will offer practical tips on how library space can embody key concepts in the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframework) and spur growth and transformation of library reference and instructional services. By teaching intentionally through space design, libraries — and librarians — can increase the significance of their roles in the learning and research processes at their colleges and universities.

K-16 Learning Continuums

Media Center Newsletter, Q1, FY13
The Clarksburg Media Center hosted its first Islamic Culture Fair during lunch on March 21. Students organized displays about Islamic history, religion, and culture. A presenter spoke about Islamic women's issues. Community members contributed traditional Islamic foods. The event aimed to increase cultural awareness. The Media Center staff was pleased to host. Student usage of the Media Center during the quarter totaled over 14,000 visits.
TKAM - Meyer
Students will create a fictional newspaper from the 1930s setting of To Kill a Mockingbird. Working in pairs, students must write four news stories - two about events from the novel and two about real historical events from the 1930s. The newspaper should have a front page with two major stories and photos, and a second page with two additional stories. Research from multiple sources is required, and stories must have headlines, bylines, and follow basic news writing principles. A works cited page is also required to cite all sources.

In January Sarah Costlow arranged for the APPS seniors to be treated to a presentation by Dr. Corey Campion of Shepherd University. Dr. Campion is a historian of mod- ern Europe with a specialty in French and German histo- ry. He was a GWU DAAD Research Ambassador and an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University. Dr. Campion spoke about the academic and social differ- ences between college and high school. The students took this opportunity to engage him with discussions on many college topics, such as scholarships, dorm life, study habits, course selection, and exams. Dr. Campion highly stressed the importance of regular communica- tions by students with their instructors as a key to suc- cess at the college level.
