In 1996, Development Counsellors International set out to provide the economic development community with a unique opportunity: a chance to hear from its target audience. With a comprehensive survey of corporate executives with site selection responsibilities, DCI sought to understand best practices in marketing places by going directly to the “customer” of the economic development world.
Since its inception, A View from Corporate America: Winning Strategies in Economic Development Marketing has become a valuable and highly regarded resource among economic development professionals. Now in its seventh iteration, Winning Strategies has expanded upon its original form to include questions on international business climates, as well as to provide an updated snapshot of corporate America in 2014.
This is the presentation that Andy Levine and Dariel Curren gave during IEDC's Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

Candid Conversations with Product People: Social Collaborative Management: Ha...Aggregage
Social Collaborative Management aims at delivering, at the enterprise level, a common goal for the business while harnessing the performance advantages of a collaborative community. This is a vital paradigm shift that many organisations are trying to understand right now - balancing traditional work and centralised leadership against the value of decentralised teams and trust. But the principles of harnessing collective power, collaboration, and community build an underlying ‘constant change’ capability that is critical in today’s new work environment.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Data, Scale, & Social Change: Powering Room to Read to Change the World
How can a start-up non-profit organization open 6 times the number of libraries that Andrew
Carnegie opened during his lifetime? How can a network of “average people in the
technology sector” create social change on a jaw-dropping and awesome level? Join John
Wood, Founder and Board Co-Chair of Room to Read, as he and salesforce.com Executive
Vice Chairman Frank van Veenendaal discuss how salesforce.com has helped Room to
Read (www.roomtoread.org) run itself like a business to become one of the most efficient
and fastest-growing non-profits in the world. In 1999, at the age of thirty-five, John Wood
(http://www.creatingroomtoread.com/meet-john-wood/) quit a lucrative career at Microsoft
and set himself a bold and ambitious goal: to make sure that millions of children across the
developing world would no longer be told they had “lost the lottery of life”, and would
12
13. instead gain an education. As the organization began scaling rapidly to ten countries
across Asia and Africa, salesforce.com helped the organization tackle the challenges of
expansion while maintaining the integrity of its original vision. salesforce.com enables
Room to Read to comprehensively track information across programs, business
development, and field operations, and allows the organization to monitor each of its
15,000 active projects and efficiently manage data and programmatic enhancements while
maintaining transparency and accountability to its donors. John and Frank will talk about
the ways salesforce.com has helped Room to Read achieve maximum results, the role of
corporate social responsibility in improving communities, the Salesforce.com Foundation’s
integrated philanthropic approach, and Room to Read’s inspirational story of scale and
success.
