This study investigated the association between poverty and new HIV diagnoses in Houston/Harris County, Texas in 2000 and 2010. The results showed that in both years, the rate of new HIV diagnoses was positively associated with increased percentages living below the poverty line. However, the rate ratio between those in extreme poverty (>20% below poverty line) and those with low poverty (5% below poverty line) decreased from 2000 to 2010. Across both years and all poverty levels, males had higher diagnosis rates than females and African Americans remained the most impacted group. The highest rates also shifted to younger age groups living in extreme poverty in 2010, indicating targeted prevention efforts are needed for this underserved population.

There is a prevalence of HIV AIDS in the society among men and women and there is gender disparity in the prevalence of HIV AIDS. Biological and other factors are pointing to the fact that the women are more vulnerable and therefore have more possibilities of spreading it. This study was done in Fako Division in the South West Region of Cameroon. The general objective of this study was to investigate the factors leading to the gender disparity in the prevalence of HIV AIDS. The research is a descriptive survey. The target population was the HIV AIDS patients that are treated in the Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals. These hospitals were purposively selected with a purposive sampling of 50 males and female. This research involves the use of both primary and secondary data with the use of questionnaires, check list and review of secondary data on problems leading to a gender difference in the prevalence of HIV AIDS in these areas. Analysis of data was done with the use of windows SPSS. Findings of the study show that there is a high gender difference of about 39.21 in Buea Regional Hospital and a gender difference of 24.4 in Limbe Regional Hospital. Some factors were found responsible for this disparity that include early start of sexual activities for females, low level of education, multiple sexual partners, unemployment for females and others. Recommendations have been made to the government, the women themselves, health professionals, NGOs and other significant stakeholders. Abstract: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has been in existence for more than twenty years and women account for nearly half the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS. Women’s rate of new infection surpasses men’s because biological, cultural, and social economic conditions contribute to women’s greater vulnerability to HIV. The challenges that these low-income earning women living with HIV/AIDS face are social, economic, and psychological. When a woman is sick the family’s property, the children’s education, savings and food security are threatened because women provide the majority of labour and managerial services for their household. The purpose of the study was to establish the social challenges that face low-income earning women living with HIV/AIDS. A sample of 248 out of a population of 700 who were receiving Home Based Care within Nakuru Municipality was selected. The study was a survey where Questionnaire and interviews were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed that low income women living with HIV/AIDS faced various social challenges such as shame, discrimination, and causing strain in the family among others. The disparities that existed among the singles and the married revealed that one’s marital status determined the extent to which one was ashamed, evoked negative changes in the behaviour of family members and experienced discrimination based on their HIV/AIDS status. The implications of the findings is that the public support for the low-income women living with HIV/AIDS is inadequate and mostly material, and emotional support is also crucial in the management and coping with HIV/AIDS.
The Effect Of Education And Aids

This study examined the onset of sexual behavior and risk among youth perinatally infected with HIV compared to HIV-affected youth. Using data from two longitudinal studies of over 400 youth, the study found that:
1) Perinatally HIV-infected youth showed delayed onset of sexual behaviors and unprotected sex compared to socio-demographically matched HIV-negative youth.
2) Youth with HIV-positive caregivers were less likely to report onset of unprotected sex compared to HIV-negative youth with HIV-negative caregivers.

Marama Pala Ngātiawa ki Kapiti, Kaiwhakahaere/Executive Director (INA), an HIV positive Māori woman, plans to promote the visibility of Indigenous People’s HIV and AIDS issues; to increase the support from local, regional and international Indigenous people.
“History shows us that HIV is not openly discussed at Indigenous conferences. It’s an issue that gets left off the agenda.” says Marama Pala, “Even though Indigenous Peoples experience high rates of HIV and AIDS, it needs to be made visible at all Indigenous conferences and gatherings. It’s time that all Indigenous peoples became aware that we are a marginalised community vulnerable to HIV”
Indigenous people globally continue to under represented in HIV prevention, research, policy and funding initiatives, and this contributes to ongoing HIV disparities and resource allocation. The stigma within Indigenous communities further marginalises this health issue, making it difficult to discuss.
“I hope am able to stress the importance of HIV, speaking openly about HIV and facing the stigma of HIV with my Indigenous and aboriginal brothers and sisters” urges Marama. “Silence No More...for the sake of my HIV negative children; we need to eliminate stigma and discrimination and make our people safe.”
Hiv
HIV compromises the immune system, leading to AIDS. Early HIV symptoms include fever and swollen glands. Late stage AIDS symptoms include weight loss, fatigue, and infections. HIV is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids like during unprotected sex or sharing needles. Prevention methods include condoms, needle exchange programs, and avoiding contact with infected fluids. Currently over 33 million people have HIV/AIDS globally, with most cases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Anogenital anatomy and sexual HIV spread
HIV/AIDS affects persons from Sub-Saharan Africa and men who have sex with men (MSM) in a disproportionate way. This article analyzes the evidence and the plausibility of anogenital anatomical factors which may contribute to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the key populations for sexual transmission. The etiology of the pandemic is discussed. Direct and indirect evidence for narrow anogenital anatomy is presented. Two semi-theoretical arguments for anatomical factors are put forward. Anogenital anatomy is analyzed in view of Hill's criteria for causation. I describe how randomized controlled trials and other confirmatory studies could be designed and discuss the consequences of the hypothesis. While many contributing factors for the HIV/AIDS pandemic are well established, direct and indirect empirical evidence, as well as semi-theoretical arguments, militates for an additional role of macroscopic anogenital anatomy in HIV key populations. This factor fulfills Hill's criteria.
Honors Thesis

Community Analysis
The most prevalent risk factors among racial and ethnic minorities are unprotected vaginal or anal sex, inadequate sex education, improving access to prevention and care services and drug use. Jackson, MS has a population of 173,212, with median household income of $32,250. Poverty is one of the major contributing factors to the risky behaviors and the rise of HIV infections within racial/ethnic minority youths. The residents with incomes below the poverty level in Jackson, MS by 2015 was 39.9%, and those with income below 50% of the poverty level was 19.2%, the breakdown is between ages 13 to 19 years of poor residents in Jackson, MS and the percentage is below half of poverty level of 20%. The most common race or ethnicity living below the poverty line in Jackson, MS is Black or African American, followed by White and Hispanic or Latino. This study analyzed the correlation between tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections at the census tract level in Harris County, Texas from 2009-2010. The authors found that census tracts with higher percentages of poverty, Black residents, and foreign-born residents had above average rates of both HIV and TB. Logistic regression also showed these factors were associated with higher odds of co-infection of HIV/TB. Abstract: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has been in existence for more than twenty years and women account for nearly half the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS. Women’s rate of new infection surpasses men’s because biological, cultural, and social economic conditions contribute to women’s greater vulnerability to HIV. The challenges that these low-income earning women living with HIV/AIDS face are social, economic, and psychological. When a woman is sick the family’s property, the children’s education, savings and food security are threatened because women provide the majority of labour and managerial services for their household. The purpose of the study was to establish the social challenges that face low-income earning women living with HIV/AIDS. A sample of 248 out of a population of 700 who were receiving Home Based Care within Nakuru Municipality was selected. The study was a survey where Questionnaire and interviews were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed that low income women living with HIV/AIDS faced various social challenges such as shame, discrimination, and causing strain in the family among others. The disparities that existed among the singles and the married revealed that one’s marital status determined the extent to which one was ashamed, evoked negative changes in the behaviour of family members and experienced discrimination based on their HIV/AIDS status. The implications of the findings is that the public support for the low-income women living with HIV/AIDS is inadequate and mostly material, and emotional support is also crucial in the management and coping with HIV/AIDS.
The Effect Of Education And Aids

Marama Pala Ngātiawa ki Kapiti, Kaiwhakahaere/Executive Director (INA), an HIV positive Māori woman, plans to promote the visibility of Indigenous People’s HIV and AIDS issues; to increase the support from local, regional and international Indigenous people.
“History shows us that HIV is not openly discussed at Indigenous conferences. It’s an issue that gets left off the agenda.” says Marama Pala, “Even though Indigenous Peoples experience high rates of HIV and AIDS, it needs to be made visible at all Indigenous conferences and gatherings. It’s time that all Indigenous peoples became aware that we are a marginalised community vulnerable to HIV”
Indigenous people globally continue to under represented in HIV prevention, research, policy and funding initiatives, and this contributes to ongoing HIV disparities and resource allocation. The stigma within Indigenous communities further marginalises this health issue, making it difficult to discuss.
“I hope am able to stress the importance of HIV, speaking openly about HIV and facing the stigma of HIV with my Indigenous and aboriginal brothers and sisters” urges Marama. “Silence No More...for the sake of my HIV negative children; we need to eliminate stigma and discrimination and make our people safe.”

Anogenital anatomy and sexual HIV spread
HIV/AIDS affects persons from Sub-Saharan Africa and men who have sex with men (MSM) in a disproportionate way. This article analyzes the evidence and the plausibility of anogenital anatomical factors which may contribute to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the key populations for sexual transmission. The etiology of the pandemic is discussed. Direct and indirect evidence for narrow anogenital anatomy is presented. Two semi-theoretical arguments for anatomical factors are put forward. Anogenital anatomy is analyzed in view of Hill's criteria for causation. I describe how randomized controlled trials and other confirmatory studies could be designed and discuss the consequences of the hypothesis. While many contributing factors for the HIV/AIDS pandemic are well established, direct and indirect empirical evidence, as well as semi-theoretical arguments, militates for an additional role of macroscopic anogenital anatomy in HIV key populations. This factor fulfills Hill's criteria.

The rise in the numbers of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) diagnoses is notable especially for racial and ethnic minority youth and adolescents aged 13 to 19 years (National Institute of Health, 2013). Approximately one half of all new HIV infections in the United States occur among person(s) younger than 25 years. Nearly 4 million new sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases each year occur among youth and adolescents (NIH, 2013). Reconciling data of 2015, 54.2% of high school students reported having sexual intercourse; of students reported sex during the previous months, 39% stated they didn’t use a condom during their last sexual encounter (United States Census Bureau, 2014). The number of sexually active among youth and adolescents, from 2001 to 2014, there’s been a significant increase in the percentage of youth and adolescents who were never taught about HIV/AIDS. Unified national HIV/AIDS surveillance system has enhanced the ability to monitor and characterize racial and ethnic minority youth populations affected by the HIV epidemic and provide information on the entire population of HIV infected persons who have been tested confidentially (NIH, 2014). Approximately 1.2 million people were living with HIV in the United States in 2014, 49% and 51% undiagnosed infections. Almost 50,000 people become newly infected each year, and in 2014, the estimated rate of diagnoses of HIV infection was 13.8 per 100,000 population (National Institute of Health, 2014). Social trust is associated with lowering the of course mortality rates and that associated HIV infection varied within racial and ethnic minority youth and adolescents. Several studies link alcohol and drug use to higher rates of unprotected anal intercourse, higher numbers of sex partners, and inconsistent condom use (NIH, 2014). Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) of all races and ethnicities remain
the population most profoundly affected by HIV.
In 2010, the estimated number of new HIV infections among MSM was 29,800, a significant
12% increase from the 26,700 new infections among MSM in 20082.
Although MSM represent about 4% of the male population in the United States4, in 2010, MSM
accounted for 78% of new HIV infections among males and 63% of all new infections2. MSM
accounted for 54% of all people living with HIV infection in 2011, the most recent year these
data are available1.
In 2010, white MSM continued to account for the largest number of new HIV infections
(11,200), by transmission category, followed closely by black MSM (10,600)2.
The estimated number of new HIV infections was greatest among MSM in the youngest age
group. In 2010, the greatest number of new HIV infections (4,800) among MSM occurred in
young black/African American MSM aged 13.

This study examined efforts to re-link HIV-positive individuals in Houston who had fallen out of medical care back into treatment. Over two years, service linkage workers investigated 928 cases of individuals identified as being out of care. They were able to locate and determine eligibility for only 157 cases. Of those, they successfully re-linked 29 individuals, or about 11% of the original referrals, back into HIV medical care. The results showed that re-linking individuals to care after falling out is a resource-intensive process with low success rates. Collaboration between medical providers and health departments may help intervene earlier when patients first miss appointments to prevent them from fully dropping out of care.

Watkins1,2 , Marcia Wolverton1 and Raouf Arafat1 , (1) Houston Department of Health and Human Services, (2) University of Texas School of Public Health BACKGROUND: Poverty, residential stability, and unemployment rates were associated with the number of newly HIV diagnosed residents in 2008 and 2009 in Houston/Harris County. METHODS: This study aims to investigate the association between poverty and new HIV diagnoses in Houston/Harris County, TX. The data was extracted from the Enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System (eHARS) and linked to Census variables using residential address at HIV diagnosis in 2000 and 2010. Sex, age, and race/ethnicity were considered in the analysis. Cases were included in the analysis if they were first diagnosed with HIV in Houston or Harris County. Cases were geocoded and analyzed at the census tract level and published only in an aggregate form. Poverty was defined as percent below poverty which was categorized into four groups (below 5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, and > 20% below the poverty line). Rate of HIV diagnosis was defined as the total number of new HIV diagnoses in a poverty group divided by the total number of individuals in the corresponding poverty group. Rate ratio was defined as the rate of HIV new diagnoses in the population of more than 20% below poverty (extreme poverty) divided by the rate of HIV new diagnoses in the population of 5% below poverty per census tract. RESULTS: In 2000 and 2010, the rate of new HIV diagnosis was positively associated with increased percentage below poverty in Houston, TX. However, the rate ratio decreased by half from 2000 (rate ratio=8.20) to 2010 (rate ratio=4.07). In 2000 and 2010, the rate among males and the rate among females were highest for the extreme poverty group. Males had higher rates than females across all poverty levels. For all age groups, rates were the highest among the extreme poverty group. In 2000, the highest rate was among the 35 to 44 age group living in extreme poverty. In 2010, the highest rate shifted to the 25 to 34 age group living in extreme poverty. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that economically disadvantaged populations were more likely to receive new HIV diagnoses in both 2000 and 2010. Even though the overall rate ratio decreased from 2000 to 2010, African American remained as the group that was most impacted by HIV across all poverty groups. The shift in the rate by age groups living in extreme poverty indicates that younger HIV-infected individuals living in extreme poverty are underserved and targeted HIV prevention efforts might be most impactful for this population.
