Editor's Notes
Software: bottom-up AND top-down, professional contributors despite hobbyist reputations, had clear value message, and you won’t realize when you’ve won Media (music and movies): generational, middlemen/gatekeepers are impediments, value chain Journalism: form vs function (unbundling quality & reputation from publication)
went through those phases over TEN YEARS
another place to look for inspiration eg small is agile, can be inhibited by non-agile big who use IP to prevent competition embrace competition for commercialisation (invent faster, build brand, iterate) but specifically
because science is mixture of enterprise/business AND social good
example: drinking straws
how many times have you sat in traffic, crawling to/from the bridge or the gully or whatever your traffic chokepoint is, staring at all these one-person cars, as a deadline looms and you can see you’re going to miss your meeting, calling ahead to say “look, sorry, I’m stuck in this bloody traffic”
Teachers do awesome stuff lean manufacturing lean startup lean teaching
talk between the meeting ("sing")
do one small thing (open access, open data, open research), then talk about it ("dance")
identify the unconvinced influencer whose arms you'll twist to attend next year ("grow the choir")
