Imagine a day that follows four months of meaningful conversation and planning engaging students, faculty, trustees, and alumni. Faculty learn how to team up with seniors to run ethics based seminars including participants in 6th through 12th grade. Beyond basic Socratic skills, faculty learn about leading open-ended conversations that bring out each participant’s voice, how to apply ethical frameworks, and how to bring alive an ethical challenge within a chosen school wide topic. The day starts by honoring newly elected distinguished alumni who reflect on the ethical lessons and moral character that they learned while in school. Several blocks of student/faculty run seminars follow that focus on issues within a given topic such as health, food, or simply decision making in areas of consequence when there is no easy answer and no ultimate resolution.
In the afternoon of Ethics Day, alumni come to campus and offer seminars on ethical dilemmas within their chosen professions. Students connect with graduates, learn about different careers, and then typically address case studies that open their eyes to real world applications. Alumni are inspired by the opportunity to return to their school to teach. Finally, students engage in some reflective conversation and writing to finish a truly transformational day.
This conference session will cover the overall design and philosophy behind running an Ethics Day program, the many and varied benefits of such a program, mistakes to avoid, and lots of interactive conversation about how this might be adapted to different school cultures. Course Description
This course explores key philosophical concepts from an ethical perspective. Students will analyze selected assertions of knowledge and the methods of reasoning humans use to justify these claims. Through research into theories of science and religion, as well as the theoretical and empirical challenges these institutions of thought face, students will also investigate how the mind constructs and understands reality. This will provide a foundation for an exploration into questions of morality, in which students will look at traditional and contemporary ethical theories, and apply these theories to contemporary moral issues.
Course Design
In this course, students will be introduced to various ethical theories and practical ethical issues. 1) Students will examine and engage dominant theories of ethics, as well as relativism, and how the relativist position argues against universal ethical principles. Students will utilize what they learn about those ethical theories to examine a contemporary ethical issue and reflect on their own ideas about relativism. 2) Students will examine consequentialist ethical theory and responses to the consequentialist position. 3) Students will examine deontological ethical theory. 4) Students will examine virtue ethics. 5) Students will examine feminist ethics and how feminist ethics relate and attempt to break free from the previous ethical positions. While students are learning about the various ethical theories they will also examine articles that utilize the theories to make arguments in relation to contemporary moral problems. Students will ultimately be asked to choose a contemporary moral problem and apply the ethical theories to the moral problem, while also explaining which theory they find to provide the strongest position.

According to Davis and Blomstrom (1975), social responsibility is “the obligation of decision makers to take actions which protect and improve the welfare of society as a whole along with their own interests” (p. 39).

Course Description
This course explores key philosophical concepts from an ethical perspective. Students will analyze selected assertions of knowledge and the methods of reasoning humans use to justify these claims. Through research into theories of science and religion, as well as the theoretical and empirical challenges these institutions of thought face, students will also investigate how the mind constructs and understands reality. This will provide a foundation for an exploration into questions of morality, in which students will look at traditional and contemporary ethical theories, and apply these theories to contemporary moral issues.
Course Design
In this course, students will be introduced to various ethical theories and practical ethical issues. 1) Students will examine and engage dominant theories of ethics, as well as relativism, and how the relativist position argues against universal ethical principles. Students will utilize what they learn about those ethical theories to examine a contemporary ethical issue and reflect on their own ideas about relativism. 2) Students will examine consequentialist ethical theory and responses to the consequentialist position. 3) Students will examine deontological ethical theory. 4) Students will examine virtue ethics. 5) Students will examine feminist ethics and how feminist ethics relate and attempt to break free from the previous ethical positions. While students are learning about the various ethical theories they will also examine articles that utilize the theories to make arguments in relation to contemporary moral problems. Students will ultimately be asked to choose a contemporary moral problem and apply the ethical theories to the moral problem, while also explaining which theory they find to provide the strongest position.

Define the nature and scope of morality and ethics.
Differentiate among traditional ethical theories.
Interpret philosophical thought through critical thinking.
Apply the concepts of ethical and moral reasoning to contemporary issues.

As societies have developed and become more knowledge-oriented and socially alert, the need for social responsibility has increased. According to Davis and Blomstrom (1975), social responsibility is “the obligation of decision makers to take actions which protect and improve the welfare of society as a whole along with their own interests” (p. 39).

• Identify and discuss the top five (5) ethical issues confronting your field of study. My area of study is the LEGAL field.

Teaching online without the benefit of face-to-face interaction has many challenges.
However, over the years of teaching in the classroom and online both at the graduate and undergraduate level, the author has found some very simple strategies (often overlooked) that can greatly increase student satisfaction with online delivery almost to the level of good face-to-face instruction.

- The 2012 Conference will be held at West Point from October 14 through October 17. Delegates depart West Point on October 18.
- NCEA is an opportunity for students from across our country to discuss ethics and its implications in their future careers.
- The delegates who attend the conference are leaders from their colleges and universities. Senior Leaders are selected on their ability and willingness to openly discuss the ethical challenges they have faced.Mentors are selected for their ability to draw the students into meaningful conversations. Faculty delegates are selected on their ability to contribute to the scholarly work of the conference.
- The first day is focused on setting a foundation for ethical thinking. The second day is focused on the application of ethics on campus. And the third day is focused on the application of ethics in professional life.
- The agenda is unique on the focus of the small discussion groups.
- The Faculty Delegates focus their effort on producing deliverables which are useful for the administrations of the attending institutions.
