This document proposes using a PWM voltage source converter with an input filter as a front end converter to improve power quality by drawing a sinusoidal input current with low harmonic distortion and adjustable power factor close to unity. It describes the modeling and control strategy for the converter. The control strategy uses a synchronous reference frame and PI controllers to control the d-q axis currents and maintain the DC bus voltage. Simulation results show the converter achieves near unity power factor with low current harmonic distortion and regulates the DC bus voltage during load changes while allowing power reversal capability. The values of the input inductor and DC bus capacitor are designed based on the system specifications and ripple requirements.
