1. Innovation@ourLibrary: beta implementation of a unified web-scale discovery tool for library content Jason Price, PhD Head of Collections, Claremont Colleges Library Springer Library Advisory Board Nov. 14, 2009
2. What we needed A one-stop shop for library-wide search (300 DBs) A comprehensive full text only search And it must be simple – easy – fast

4. Pre-index vs. metasearch Metasearch Pre-index search Other primary content Primary content Content metadata & some full text fed to databases Master index DB1 DB2 OPAC DB3 DigLib DB4 Knowledgebase filter to locally- available content User User (Orig fig to left) http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Meta-search-en.svg

12. Challenges for Summon Relevance, Relevance, and Relevance Content breadth, depth and transparency Effect of combined full text & metadata indexing Relies on openUrl to access full text content Increasing discovery & use of local print resources(?)
13. Potential impacts of Summon Libraries can potentially offer an effective (better?) alternative to Google Scholar Some A&I only databases may be superseded Based on cost, use & % of content indexed in Summon Replaces metasearch? But not (yet) able to address predefined subject subsets—does it need to? Knowledgebase accuracy becomes more important Summon does not provide direct full text links Accuracy of OpenUrl 1-click to full text becomes crucial
29. Summon demo, discussion and Q&A http://libraries.claremont.edu live to Claremont users Sept. 2009
Editor's Notes
Students (and many faculty) want a Google/Google Scholar-like searchSilo problem – which database(s) should I use? Users recognize greater quality of library resources, but default to web search because of its ease
MS: user sends query to meta search engine, waits for results from each DB, Also can only get to content through databasesContent- MS limited to things you can connect to; PI limited to things you can ingestIndexing Quality Control – MS Map fields – PI make your ownFull text limits- MS esp. bad – return all results from those that don’t limit, etc

Index: Pre-Indexed content,Standardized acrosscontent types and providersRights: Based on knowledgbaseInterface: yet feature rich vs Google scholar
Better: Better quality, higher percent full text accessible, broader more focused search!
