New ITU Standard on Identity & Access ManagementITU
A new ITU international standard will bring greater business relevance to the identity and access management (IAM) systems employed by enterprises to manage electronic identities and control access to ICT resources. The standard will enable more intuitive, cost-effective assignment and management of IAM roles and user permissions.
The standard – Recommendation ITU-T X.1257 “Identity and access management taxonomy” – was developed by the ITU standardization expert group responsible for building confidence and security in the use of ICTs, ITU-T Study Group 17.
ITU-T X.1257 addresses the lack of business meaning in IAM roles and permissions which has led to unnecessary complexity in the operation of IAM systems. This complexity affects the entire IAM lifecycle, often leading to the need for costly maintenance of IAM systems as well as conditions prone to the emergence of security vulnerabilities in enterprise systems.
ITU-T X.1257 details requirements for a “task-based access management” framework. Irrespective of industry sector or the size of the enterprise in question, this framework has four clear advantages:
IAM Role Engineers will be in a position to prevent role and entitlements explosion
Application Teams can implement Separation of Duties across multiple applications
Access Reviewers can automate both potential and historical user entitlements

The Study Groups of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) assemble experts from around the world to develop international standards known as ITU-T Recommendations which act as defining elements in the global infrastructure of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Standards are critical to the interoperability of ICTs and whether we exchange voice, video or data messages, standards enable global communications by ensuring that countries’ ICT networks and devices are speaking the same language.
International ICT standards avoid costly market battles over preferred technologies, and for companies from emerging markets, they create a level playing field which provides access to new markets. They are an essential aid to developing countries in building their infrastructure and encouraging economic development, and through economies of scale, they can reduce costs for all: manufacturers, operators and consumers.
From its inception in 1865, ITU-T has driven a contribution-led, consensus-based approach to standards development in which all countries and companies, no matter how large or small, are afforded equal rights to influence the development of ITU-T Recommendations. From its beginnings as a body standardizing international telegraph exchange, through its formative role in telecommunications, and in today’s converged ICT ecosystem, ITU-T has provided the world’s best facilities to the global standardization community and remains the world’s only truly global ICT standards body.
Based at ITU’s headquarters in Geneva, the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) provides secretariat support to ITU-T Study Groups through sophisticated electronic working methods and state-of-the-art facilities in Geneva accommodating the six official languages of the Union – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Headed by an elected official with the title Director, it is the body responsible for providing cohesion to ITU-T’s standards development process.

Software Modeling and the Future of Engineering (ICMT/STAF Keynote at York)Jean Bézivin
In the past fifty years the world of engineering has considerably changed. From computer-assisted to software-intensive, most classical and emerging domain engineering fields now heavily draw on some forms of Software Model Engineering (SME) shortly called “Software Modeling”. Starting from a general map of engineering fields, the talk will first outline this important evolution and the progressive shift of SME from the mere support of code production and maintenance to the much broader spectrum of a central practice in most of these current domain engineering fields. In other words the focus of software modeling is rapidly changing from software engineering to engineering software. But what is exactly SME? Historically its definition has been rather fluctuating. The last iteration, since 2000, did not even produce a unique characterization. On the contrary, SME may be viewed as composed as a set of different facets, some of them not even mutually compatible. The talk will describe these various segments of SME, their objective, market, usage characteristics and hopefully convergence of goals. One of these segments, the management of abstract correspondences between models (and of transformations, their operational counterparts) will be for example more particularly detailed and its importance outlined. All these observations will allow to conclude that, at this point of its history and in this state of maturity, software modeling may be seen as an essential contribution to the future of engineering and an outstanding long-term research opportunity.
This is a complex time for the American Dream, and the run-up to the presidential election makes for an ideal moment to take stock of how this enduring concept is being both affirmed and challenged.
This report spotlights findings from a recent JWTIntelligence survey that tracked how perceptions have shifted in the four years since we conducted a similar study, during the last presidential campaign. It details how Americans define the Dream, the extent to which they believe in it, how and why attitudes toward the Dream are changing, and how these differ by generation. It concludes with takeaways for brands, along with examples of how marketers have tapped into the American Dream in the recent past.
