2. The art of designing and evolving networks into simpler, more cost-effective operations in
the 5G, IoT and Cloud era is rapidly approaching its next major inflection point. Demand for
more infrastructure, for dynamic resource management and for on-demand enablement of
increasing service types, are forcing paradigm shifts for how networks are engineered to
support work flows. Automation and AI are key transformation agents to address these
challenges. Networks can no longer be conceived in silos. They must be engineered with
end-to-end integration and unification as end goals by leveraging packet-optical
convergence, multivendor interoperability and multi-layer operational models. Three areas
of innovation are converging to drive unprecedented changes in the way packet-optical
networks are built and operated:
1. The Emergence of Digital Coherent Optics (DCO): Converging form factors for high-
performance client and coherent pluggable optics operating at 400G and beyond
enable common design rules and operation models through standardization of YANG
data models and control disaggregation via open API-interfaces
2. Elimination of Vendor Lock-in: Operational normalization between vendor solutions
with innovations that include interoperable FEC, open APIs and community-led control
specifications and standards (e.g., Open ROADM, OpenConfig, TAPI, etc.)
3. Automating Services and Transport: CapEx and OpEx reduction through more
efficient resource utilization leveraging packet optical convergence and multi-layer
(single pane-of-glass) orchestration, accelerating time-to-market and revenue
This inflection is fueled by the convergence of form factors and power requirements for
appropriate client and line-side DCO pluggables with routing network processors (NPU) that
enable immense performance flexibility. A byproduct of interchangeable client and line-
side optics is complete access to throughput capacity (eliminating density penalties of
integrated packet-optical convergence platforms), and the mitigation of multivendor-
induced service incompatibility between platforms. The broad adoption of evolving industry
specifications and standards will lead to, rather than constrain, the trajectory of innovative
service trends in the 5G, IoT and Cloud era. Machine Learning and Automation will become
vital to evolving network architectures. This convergence of new hardware and software
innovations will enable the service and transport layers to actively participate in automation
trends going forward.

Amit is Director of Product Management at Juniper Networks responsible
for Metro and Optical products. Amit has a variety of experience in Product
managing portfolio in Core routing, Access/Aggregation, Packet Optical,
Optical and SDN space at Juniper Networks and previously at Cisco. Amit has an MBA from
Haas school of business, UC Berkeley and a B.E in Computer Science from PEC Chandigarh.
Martin Birk, Director, Optical Platforms, AT&T, USA
OpenROADM introduction and extension to 400G
Martin Birk received his master's and doctorate degrees from Germany’s
University of Ulm in 1994 and 1999, respectively. Since 1999, he has been
with AT&T Labs in New Jersey, working on high-speed optical transmission
at data rates of 100Gb/s and above. In 2016, Martin received the AT&T Fellow award.

• Born in Southern Italy (Puglie), Domenico Di Mola received his Master’s
Degree in Electronic Engineering and post doctorate from Polytechnic of
Turin-Italy. He started his career in Milan Italy with Italtel (Telecom Italia)
contributing to the design of the first Glass on Silicon Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG)
integrated Mux-DeMux. In 1995, he pioneered development and early deployment of
the first tunable Add & Drop architecture and contributed to industry publications
including JLT, JSQE and Photonic Letters. Throughout his career, Domenico has worked
in various engineering and management roles for leading organizations in the
optoelectronic field including Agilent (now Avago), JDSU (now Lumentum) and Oplink
(acquired by Molex), where he led the development of first generation 10G, 40G and

4. 100G optical module and pluggable transceivers. He was co-founder of a silicon-based
technology start-up acquired by Agilent Technologies in 2001. In 2008, Domenico led the
Alcatel-Lucent high-speed engineering team that develop the first single carrier 100G
QPSK Coherent solution based on 65nm CMOS integrated DSP-ASIC. Currently, he is VP
of Engineering in Juniper’s Chief Development Office and leads the Packet-Optical
platform team. He has been key note speaker at ECIO, ECOC, OFC and MWC and holds
several fundamental patents in technologies, components and systems for DWDM
networks. Domenico lives in California with his family and 2 dogs.
Brendan Gibbs, Vice President, Service Provider Segment, Juniper Networks,

Brendan joined Juniper Networks in 2018 as Vice President of the Service
Provider Segment. Graduating from Georgetown University, Brendan has
over 20 years of industry experience in routing technologies and Service
Provider solutions, investing a significant portion of his tenure in various product
management leadership roles with Cisco Systems. Over his career, Brendan’s contributions
have influenced the evolving telecommunication industry, pairing innovative strategy with
relentless execution to achieve industry-leading results that have captured market
leadership while leading multiple product ideas from concept to billions in annual revenue.
Victor López, Technology Expert, Telefonica Global, USA
Víctor López (M.Sc. 2005 - Ph.D. 2009) is a Technology Expert at the
Technology and Planning for Transport, IP and Interconnection Networks
department in Telefonica Global CTO. He works on the IP and optical
processes of the Telefonica group. Moreover, he is involved in the research
projects as well as in the definition of the Telefonica network guidelines for IP/optical
segment. He started his carrier in Telefónica I+D as a researcher (2004). He moved to
Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in 2006, where he obtained the Ph.D. He worked as an
Assistant Professor at UAM (2009) working on metro-backbone evolution projects (BONE,
MAINS). In 2011, he joined Telefonica I+D as Technology specialist working on funded
research project from the Telefonica group and the European Commission. He has co-
authored more than 150 publications and contributed to IETF and ONF. Moreover, he is the
editor of the book Elastic Optical Networks: Architectures, Technologies and Control (308
pages, Springer 2016). His research interests include the integration of Internet services
over IP/MPLS and optical networks and control plane technologies (PCE, SDN, GMPLS).

5. Daniel Sparacin, Product Manager (Aurrion Silicon Photonics), Juniper

Dr. Daniel Sparacin is the product manager for Juniper’s silicon photonics
group. Dr. Sparacin joined Juniper Networks in 2016 with Juniper's
acquisition of Aurrion, Inc., where he was the Director of Technology. He worked previously
as a silicon photonics researcher and an advisor to the US government on funding and
management of research and development programs. Dr. Sparacin holds a PhD from MIT
and a BS from Brown University.

Prior to Acacia, Tom spent 14 years at Optium and Finisar Corporations,
where he held various management roles, including Director of Product
Line Management for high speed (>100G) transmission products. Tom has
also held positions at Lucent Technologies and Northrop Grumman Corporation. He has an
MS in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and BS degrees in Electrical
Engineering and Physics from Widener University.
