Michael Jernigan – 2014 nominee for Modern Healthcare’s Community Leadership Award.
The success of the healthcare industry depends on leaders who define themselves by leading efforts to change lives and contribute to their communities through their work. But many go above and beyond commitments central to their roles, reaching out to support causes that may be wholly unrelated to healthcare, but which build and sustain strong communities and the quality of life within them. Modern Healthcare's Community Leadership Awards was established to recognize these leaders while bringing attention to the worthy causes they support. There are 1.5 million non-profits with an estimated $2.6 trillion in assets. Some are huge operations including the United Way, Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the YMCA. Some lobby. Some compete against non-profits. They all compete against each other for donations. All face compassion fatigue, and many run into PR difficulties ... or worse (see Lance Armstrong and Livestrong). They may not be for profit and for the most part they are well respected, but they still need reputation and brand management in our 24-7-365 digital society.

Getting Your Donors to Say "I Do": Using Online Tools to Build Lasting Relati...Mark Miller
Presented at the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy on Oct. 21, 2011, this session compares e-philanthropy to romance - organized by 1) playing the field, 2) dating, and 3) taking the plunge. Mark Miller of Children's National Medical Center and Lesley Solomon of Brigham and Women's Hospital present practical tips for developing lasting relationships that lead to sustainable fundraising success. They include lessons learned from fundraising, stewardship, and list-building campaigns.
Mom’s Story; A Child Learns About MS tells the story of a young girl who sees her mother with some frightening health problems and learns she has MS but she will not die from it. This book is a compassionate, accessible and easy to understand account of symptoms, search for help, diagnosis and adaptation to this heart-wrenching disease. Amy fears the worst, which is common when one is confronted by the unknown. Her best friend, Kayla, doesn’t quite understand why Amy is so worried. Amy’s older sister, Kelly is concerned and does her best to help, while older brother, Tony, tries to deny the whole situation. Information is the key to allaying much of her fear along with understanding from parents, adult friends and her older sister.

Over the course of a year and a half, we helped a national non-profit promote and plan their bi-annual No Barriers Summit. We produced a variety of print and online collateral; helped coordinate with the host site, sponsors, vendors, and presenters; and worked onsite during the event to coordinate interviews, video shoots, and anything else that needed doing. After the event, we created a promotional brochure and video, and we helped create a host site RFP.
The YOUNG 365 Initiative is a multi-year effort to activate new and engaging youth programs and experiences. The project is also aimed at building partnerships with key organizations from around Chicago to promote and scale the best practices being used to reach youth.
This outline presentation will provide a clearer picture of where we will be taking this ambitious endeavor.

Males aged 15-24 die at rates far higher than of any other age group.
The rate of death increases if the young male is from a
low income, urban area.
In Jacksonville, the leading cause of death for young males ages
15-24 is homicide followed by unintentional injury - both of
which are directly related to how boys and men are socialized.
For these males, the traditional views that "real men" must be
"fearless," "tough" and "aggressive" have severe and negative
consequences that impact all residents.
The focus of the Boys 2 Men initiative is to improve the outcomes
for these young males by addressing:
racial, social and cultural barriers that impede a healthy
transition from boyhood to manhood
the allure of violence as resource for addressing frustrations
gender-specific issues with school performance and completion
challenges with acquiring gainful employment
issues related to creating and sustaining emotionally
and physically healthy relationships
