The goal of the Light Reactions is to capture energy from
sunlight and convert it to energy stored in ATP and NADPH
In the thylakoid membrane, there are two
clusters of chlorophyll a molecules which are
called Photosystem II and Photosystem I.
• Photosystem II = P680
• Photosystem I = P700
• Very similar to ETC in cellular Respiration
• Using electron’s (from the splitting of water) energy to pump H+ into
the thylakoid lumen
• The protons then want to move back out, through ATP synthase creating ATP
• The final electron acceptor is NADP+, which combines with electrons
and H+ to form NADPH. NADPH is an electron carrier that carries the
high energy electrons to the stroma, where their energy will later be
used during the Calvin Cycle.
Photophosphorylation is the process of making ATP from light energy. In noncyclic
photophosphorylation, both Photosystem II and Photosystem I are used to make
equal amounts of ATP and NADPH.
Calvin Cycle requires more ATP than NADPH.
• Cyclic photophosphorylation
• Electrons from Photosystem I
are passed down an electron
transport chain and their energy
is used to create a proton (H+)
gradient to make ATP, but there
is not final electron acceptor
(NADP+). Instead, the electrons
are passed back between
electron carrier proteins and
eventually end up back at
Photosystem I.
The Calvin Cycle occurs in the stroma of the
chloroplast.
• In the Calvin Cycle, energy from ATP and the electrons carried by
NADPH is used to convert CO2 to glucose (C6H12O6) = carbon fixation.
• The initial step of merging CO2 with a larger carbon-based molecule
called RuBP (ribulose bisphosphate) to begin the cycle is catalyzed
(assisted) by an enzyme called RuBP carboxylase (aka Rubisco).
• By the end of the Calvin Cycle, many three-carbon molecules called
PGAL (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate) or G3P, are created. Some of
these PGAL molecules are joined to make glucose, and some are
converted to RuBP to begin the Calvin Cycle again.
