They differ from ordinary dialogue because the opinions of the participants may vary, the emotions are high and the stakes are significant. The way in which you deal with these important discussions can have a positive or negative result and can change the course of your relationship. Learn the tools to handle life’s most difficult conversations, say what’s on your mind, and achieve positive outcomes. Challenging confrontations consists of face-to-face accountability discussions where someone has disappointed you and you talk to him or her directly. When handled well, the problem is resolved and the relationship benefits. New research demonstrates that these disappointments aren’t just irritating – they’re costly, sapping organizational performance by 20 to 50 percent. Learn to permanently resolve failed promises and missed deadlines, transform broken rules and bad behaviors into productive accountability and strengthen relationships while solving problems. At the heart of mastering these challenges is the ability to engage in and maintain dialogue. Masters of dialogue create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe about adding his or her own views to the “shared pool” of ideas being expressed. Bad products can point to unfulfilled needs; determine if failure is from lack of need or poor solution. Surprising insights are most valuable. The product owner decides and solutions must meet human, technical, and business criteria within 40 hours.

Semira Rahemtulla led a communication workshop focused on effective feedback and building psychological safety. She discussed models for understanding intentions, impacts, and behaviors in communication. Rahemtulla emphasized giving feedback focused on observable behaviors and their impact, and asking for the other perspective. Examples were provided for giving both constructive criticism and compliments. Creating a culture of appreciation through self-disclosure and managing defensiveness when receiving feedback were also covered.

- 7. Understand: Before designing solutions to meet needs of the community, entrepreneurs must build deep empathy to UNDERSTAND both individuals they are designing for and the system in which they reside.
- 8. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory in psychology that Abraham Maslow proposed in 1943 still holds relevance today. He identified that there are a range of human needs that extend from most basic physical needs to safety to love/belonging to esteem to self-actualization. Needs are something that would improve one’s experience that can be relate to physiology, safety, love/belonging, esteem or self-actualization A need is NOT a solution. A need is a general phrasing from which MANY solutions can come.
- 10. What is a want? Wants are tangible or intangible desires that are inherently unnecessary, but seemingly fulfilling. Wants are usually very narrow and often misguided; as such, truly satisfying a want is difficult. While needs can be met and satiated, wants are typically unquenchable. A want is a solution, though, if may not be the best solution available.
