This study examined the effects of land transportation and manufacturing industry on the economic improvement of Sumatra, Indonesia from 2006-2015. Regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between these variables. The results showed that land transportation and manufacturing industry had a positive and significant combined effect on economic improvement. Specifically, land transportation was found to have a positive and significant partial effect, while the manufacturing industry did not have a significant partial effect. The study utilized secondary data from the central statistics agency of Labuhan Batu Regency to analyze these relationships and their implications for the regional economy of Sumatra, Indonesia.

Currently Muscat the capital city of Oman is suffering from many traffic and transported related problems. Some of the serious concerns are high vehicle ownerships, low occupancy in personalized vehicles and poor patronization towards public transportation systems. Ruwi is the City center and a major Central Business District in Muscat. More than one million commuters daily visit Ruwi City center for their day to day business. The common transportation related problems often reported by the citizens at Ruwi CBD, are traffic congestion, over speeding of vehicles, inadequacy of parking places and pedestrian safety. All such problems can be eliminated by providing efficient public transportation system by restricting the entry of personal vehicles and para transit. In this technical paper, panning and designing of public transit facility by metro transport facility is attempted by capturing land use and travel information of daily commuters at Ruwi CBD area. An extensive literature review is carried for establishing the bench marking while planning metro transit system. For this the CBD area is cordoned and divided into traffic analysis zones based on the land use characteristics. Travel information of the commuter is estimated through interviewing them at the CBD entry gateway points and work locations. Land use characteristics are captured through reconnaissance of the area and random inspection of land parcels. Land use Information captured through the Google images and physical verification of data of the selected sample land parcels helped in estimation and characterization of the land use. Questionnaire survey at the activity centers helped in estimation of total trips attracted by the land uses. Travel characteristics, derived through the personal interviews of the commuters, facilitated for the estimation of total trips. Trip factors for different land uses are derived. Total trips generated are quantified and is used in planning of Metro Transit facility at the Ruwi city center. Commuter circulation pattern for the metro transit is also scheduled. Also it is proposed to carry extensive literature for establishing bench mark while planning the transit system.

Trip generation is the first step in the conventional transportation forecasting process. Trip generation rates can
influence the magnitude of the roadway improvements that are constructed like the amount of land that is
required to be dedicated for road’s right-of-way, and calculation of long term maintenance costs of the roadway
network. Therefore, an accurate estimate of vehicle trip generation is required to construct the necessary roadway
infrastructure without overbuilding it. Mohora to Kaptai road is an important and a busy road in Chittagong
because some important commercial buildings, power plants, industries and institutions are situated along this
road. The goal of this paper is to determine trip generation of adjacent commercial land uses of Kaptai Road. To
fulfill the goal, our objectives are to identify the number of trips generation by the adjacent commercial land uses
and to relate trip generation with respect to land use and socio-economic characteristics of Kaptai road. This
study utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS), Questionnaire Survey, Personal Interview and Multiple
Linear Regression Analysis for the trip generation analysis and calculation. Trip generation surveys have
completed at a total of 10 commercial sites, covering five different shopping centers and five different banks at
different important intersection point. The findings have clarified the existing land uses, trip generation situation
with multiple linear regression model and trip rates of commercial land uses.

ABSTRACT
This paper considers commuters’ satisfaction with public mass transit (PMT) services in Kogi State, Nigeria. The work is propelled by the practical absence of previous research efforts in the area, particularly as it affects the commuters in the grassroots. Taking in a multi-stage sampling technique, the study used a sample of 601 commuters and 70 of both employees and management staff drawn from six different public mass transit outfits operating in Kogi State, Nigeria, by both the state government and the local government areas of the province. Data was collected from commuters, contact personnel and management staff. The survey disclosed that there is a substantial deviation between the case of mass transit outfit commuter patronize and their level of gratification with the avails of the PMT. The survey concludes that commuters, generally, are not satisfied with the avails of the public mass transit in Nigeria. Established on the findings, the study recommended among others improved funding of these PMTs and the desegregation of other modalities of transportation for effective service delivery.

The recent economic growth in developing countries
like India has resulted in an intense increase of vehicle
ownership and use, as witnessed by severe traffic congestion
and bottlenecks during peak hours in most of the metropolitan
cities. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim to reduce
traffic congestion by adopting various strategies such as
providing pre-trip and en-route traffic information thereby
reducing demand, adaptive signal control for area wide
optimization of traffic flow, etc. The successful deployment
and the reliability of these systems largely depend on the
accurate estimation of the current traffic state and quick and
reliable prediction to future time steps. At a macroscopic level,
this involves the prediction of fundamental traffic stream
parameters which include speed, density and flow in spacetime
domain. The complexity of prediction is enhanced by
heterogeneous traffic conditions as prevailing in India due to
less lane discipline and complex interactions among different
vehicle types. Also, there is no exclusive traffic flow model for
heterogeneous traffic conditions which can characterize the
traffic stream at a macroscopic level. Hence, the present study
tries to explore the applicability of an existing macroscopic
model, namely the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model,
for short term prediction of traffic flow in a busy arterial in
the city of Chennai, India, under heterogeneous traffic
conditions. Both linear and exponential speed-density
relations were considered and incorporated into the
macroscopic model. The resulting partial differential
equations are solved numerically and the results are found to
be encouraging. This model can ultimately be helpful for the
implementation of ATIS/ATMS applications under
heterogeneous traffic environment.

Large cities in developing countries are characterized by growth in automobile ownership, insufficient
transportation infrastructure and service development. These cities often suffer from congestion, poor mobility
and accessibility, significant economic waste, adverse environmental impact and safety problems. This paper
focuses on identification of travel time characteristics and other traffic parameters and to develop a predictive
model for travel time on Akure major roads. Data on travel time were collected for vehicles during the morning
and evening peak periods using floating car technique. The data was analyzed using Statistical Packages for
Social Sciences (SPSS) and fitted into Multiple Regression model to establish a relationship between the
Travel Time and other road traffic parameters. Travel time (Tt) was modeled as a function of section length
(X1), number of intersections (X2), pedestrian/ economic activities (X3), Traffic volume (X4), enforcement
agency (X5) and road width (X6). The Coefficient of multiple determination R2 was 0.702 which means that
there is 70.2% of the dependent variable (travel time) in the forward direction as explained (accounted) by the
independent variables and 72.2% in the opposite direction. The result revealed that section length, pedestrian
economic activity and traffic volume were all significant at 5% level and has a positive relationship with travel
time in both forward and reverse direction. The model identifies the impact of these traffic parameters on travel
time and recommend measures for improvement.

Analysis of Road Transport Dynamics in Gombe City, Gombe State, NigeriaAJSERJournal
Road transportation, particularly in developing world continuous to be among the crucial factors of global
change in the 21st century affecting the physical dimension of cities. As such, the paper examines the road transport
development in Gombe city. In order to achieve the objectives of this research, road maps of Gombe metropolis of
1996, 2005 and 2014 were acquired to determine the changes in road network development using alpha, beta and
gamma indices and 282 copies of questionnaire were distributed to assess the effects of road transport development on
commercial activities in the study area. The results of the computation of gamma: 56.9%, 57.9% and 60.0%, beta: 1.61,
1.70 and 1.80 and alpha 31.3%, 35.3% and 38.9% indices indicated that there is a significant increase in road
connectivity in Gombe metropolis from 1996 through the 2005 to 2014. Further results revealed 95% of the
respondents indicated that improvement in road network affects movement and economic activities in many ways
which include: provision of access to commercial outfits which bring about profit by locating along major roads,
junctions and roundabouts which in turn result to increase in income, improvement in standard of living and reduction
in poverty. It is therefore, concluded that road transport development dictate the pattern of urban commercial outfits
and also affects commercial activities positively. The study discovered the importance of road transport infrastructure
to the improvement of commercial activities in the study area. It is consequently, recommended that more roads should
be constructed, renovated and dualyzed in order to improve and diversify the commercial nature of Gombe metropolis.
The study further exposed that urban roads are given more priority in Gombe State. Thus, recommended that rural
roads should be improved to harness the economic potentials in the state at large.

Abstract
Trip generation is the first step in the conventional transportation forecasting process. Trip generation rates can
influence the magnitude of the roadway improvements that are constructed like the amount of land that is
required to be dedicated for road’s right-of-way, and calculation of long term maintenance costs of the roadway
network. Therefore, an accurate estimate of vehicle trip generation is required to construct the necessary roadway
infrastructure without overbuilding it. Mohora to Kaptai road is an important and a busy road in Chittagong
because some important commercial buildings, power plants, industries and institutions are situated along this
road. The goal of this paper is to determine trip generation of adjacent commercial land uses of Kaptai Road. To
fulfill the goal, our objectives are to identify the number of trips generation by the adjacent commercial land uses
and to relate trip generation with respect to land use and socio-economic characteristics of Kaptai road. This
study utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS), Questionnaire Survey, Personal Interview and Multiple
Linear Regression Analysis for the trip generation analysis and calculation. Trip generation surveys have
completed at a total of 10 commercial sites, covering five different shopping centers and five different banks at
different important intersection point. The findings have clarified the existing land uses, trip generation situation
with multiple linear regression model and trip rates of commercial land uses.

ABSTRACT
This paper considers commuters’ satisfaction with public mass transit (PMT) services in Kogi State, Nigeria. The work is propelled by the practical absence of previous research efforts in the area, particularly as it affects the commuters in the grassroots. Taking in a multi-stage sampling technique, the study used a sample of 601 commuters and 70 of both employees and management staff drawn from six different public mass transit outfits operating in Kogi State, Nigeria, by both the state government and the local government areas of the province. Data was collected from commuters, contact personnel and management staff. The survey disclosed that there is a substantial deviation between the case of mass transit outfit commuter patronize and their level of gratification with the avails of the PMT. The survey concludes that commuters, generally, are not satisfied with the avails of the public mass transit in Nigeria. Established on the findings, the study recommended among others improved funding of these PMTs and the desegregation of other modalities of transportation for effective service delivery.

The recent economic growth in developing countries
like India has resulted in an intense increase of vehicle
ownership and use, as witnessed by severe traffic congestion
and bottlenecks during peak hours in most of the metropolitan
cities. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim to reduce
traffic congestion by adopting various strategies such as
providing pre-trip and en-route traffic information thereby
reducing demand, adaptive signal control for area wide
optimization of traffic flow, etc. The successful deployment
and the reliability of these systems largely depend on the
accurate estimation of the current traffic state and quick and
reliable prediction to future time steps. At a macroscopic level,
this involves the prediction of fundamental traffic stream
parameters which include speed, density and flow in spacetime
domain. The complexity of prediction is enhanced by
heterogeneous traffic conditions as prevailing in India due to
less lane discipline and complex interactions among different
vehicle types. Also, there is no exclusive traffic flow model for
heterogeneous traffic conditions which can characterize the
traffic stream at a macroscopic level. Hence, the present study
tries to explore the applicability of an existing macroscopic
model, namely the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model,
for short term prediction of traffic flow in a busy arterial in
the city of Chennai, India, under heterogeneous traffic
conditions. Both linear and exponential speed-density
relations were considered and incorporated into the
macroscopic model. The resulting partial differential
equations are solved numerically and the results are found to
be encouraging. This model can ultimately be helpful for the
implementation of ATIS/ATMS applications under
heterogeneous traffic environment.

Large cities in developing countries are characterized by growth in automobile ownership, insufficient
transportation infrastructure and service development. These cities often suffer from congestion, poor mobility
and accessibility, significant economic waste, adverse environmental impact and safety problems. This paper
focuses on identification of travel time characteristics and other traffic parameters and to develop a predictive
model for travel time on Akure major roads. Data on travel time were collected for vehicles during the morning
and evening peak periods using floating car technique. The data was analyzed using Statistical Packages for
Social Sciences (SPSS) and fitted into Multiple Regression model to establish a relationship between the
Travel Time and other road traffic parameters. Travel time (Tt) was modeled as a function of section length
(X1), number of intersections (X2), pedestrian/ economic activities (X3), Traffic volume (X4), enforcement
agency (X5) and road width (X6). The Coefficient of multiple determination R2 was 0.702 which means that
there is 70.2% of the dependent variable (travel time) in the forward direction as explained (accounted) by the
independent variables and 72.2% in the opposite direction. The result revealed that section length, pedestrian
economic activity and traffic volume were all significant at 5% level and has a positive relationship with travel
time in both forward and reverse direction. The model identifies the impact of these traffic parameters on travel
time and recommend measures for improvement.

Stakeholder analysis is component in a project design and implementation central to achievement of the goals and objectives for which projects are carried out. This study aimed at establishing the effect of stakeholder analysis on performance of road construction projects in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The study was anchored on Stakeholder Theory. The study population comprised of 19338 individuals who included employees of the county working within the road sector, personnel within various road construction agencies, contractors and community beneficiaries of the project. Stratified random sampling was then used to group individuals into two homogenous groups, one working directly with the project and the other of beneficiaries. Proportionate random sampling technique was then employed to sample 103 respondents in the first group who included Managers (4), County government employees (29), KURA (6), KenHA (6), KERRA (13) and Contractors (45). Simple random sampling was adopted to select 377 respondents from the community. Data collection instruments were self-administered questionnaires for personnel working directly with the project. On the other hand research assistants facilitated focused group discussions to get views from the community stakeholders. Both descriptive and inferential statistics informed the data analysis and presentation. Descriptive statistics included; percentages, means, standard and deviation. Inferential statistics was Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple ordinal regression equation analysis. Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23.0) software helped in data analysis. The study found out that stakeholder analysis had significant effect on performance of road construction projects (β3=0.203, P <0.05) on performance of road construction projects in Elgeyo Marakwet. The study recommends county Government should develop blueprints to guide road contractors in road project activities. Hence establish a favourable environment for implementations of road projects.

Abstract Road safety is a major transport, health and social issue worldwide as an estimated 1.3 million road users are killed on the roads every year, of which 90% are in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), where 72% of the world’s population lives but only half of the world’s registered vehicles are owned and driven. In terms of cost, it is estimated that USD 518 billion of lost yearly has been recorded according to the World Health Organisation, WHO (2009). These poor road safety records require immediate actions to be taken in areas of management, institutional reform and funding. Malaysia is an established dynamic and progressive LMIC seeking to improve its road safety performance and until today it depends mostly on the government’s revenues to finance its road safety plans. This practice however may cause burden to the government yearly budget which also need to cater for other sectors such as education, health and defence. To this end, this paper explores and critically evaluates the current situation of road safety inclusive of its funding mechanisms on a global scale as well as in Malaysia. In an effort to improve the situation, the paper aims at analysing the effectiveness of funding mechanism in enhancing road safety. A number of examples of successful road funding mechanism worldwide are presented together with implementation issues with the view to suggest options to improve road safety management and financing at both national and local level in Malaysia. This document summarizes a case study on urban transport and sustainable transport strategies in Karachi, Pakistan. It finds that Karachi has experienced rapid, uncontrolled urbanization and motorization that has led to an unsustainable land use and transportation system. The existing transportation infrastructure and policies in Karachi are moving the city away from sustainable transportation as motor vehicle ownership is growing quickly while public transportation is inadequate. Traffic Stream Relationships of Two-Lane Highways: A Case of Akure-Ondo Road ...IJAEMSJORNAL
In the design and planning process of highway infrastructure, speed-flow-density relationships are useful tools for predicting the roadway capacity, determining adequate level-of-service of traffic flow and travel time for a given roadway. The speed-flow-density relationships currently used for transportation studies in Nigeria is derived from the Highway Capacity Manual, which does not reflect the true traffic situation on two-lane roads in Nigeria. Developing cost effective tools for describing these relationships in the context of a developing country like Nigeria is imperative. The aim of this study was to develop models to describe the relationship between traffic flow, speed and density on Akure-Ondo two-lane highway in southwest Nigeria. Moving observer technique was employed to collect traffic stream data over a stretch of 5km on the study segment during periods of uniform flow on weekdays. To describe the traffic stream relationships, two approaches namely: related and nonrelated traffic stream models were developed. The nonrelated traffic stream models gave inaccurate relationships while the related traffic stream modelling approach performed well at describing speed-flow, flow-density and flow-speed relationships with R2 values 0.62, 0.75, and 0.80 respectively. The relationships developed from related traffic stream models estimated maximum flow on the study segment as 330 veh/h at an optimum density of 4.44 veh/km. The speed at maximum flow was estimated as 74.5km/h, while the free flow speed was estimated as 149.027km/h.
The urban areas of Yogyakarta's carrying capacity tend to decrease. This is due to
the socio-economic dynamics of the community is more concentrated in Agglomeration
Yogyakarta. This study attempts to examine various policies that have to do with the
implementation of public transportation. Some data were collected such as passenger
public transport performance indicators, perceptual data and user expectations of
transportation services. All data is processed, analyzed and conducted discussion and
interpretation as necessary. The results showed that the performance of public
transportation mode of passengers in terms of the load factor is still below 35% for the
Trans Jogja mode and the regular mode is still below 17%. The result of service quality
(servqual) method to user perception and expectation, all attribute of service happened
gap which is negative sign (-) with average score gap score to all service attribute item
is equal to -1,4157. While the demand satisfaction score average of all items of service
attribute based on user interest rate is -6,200. From these indicators can be explained
that the performance of public transport services passenger urban areas of Yogyakarta
is still far from what is mandated legislation
Predicting the use of public transportation: A case study from Putrajaya, Mal...UCSI University
Putrajaya is a new federal administrative capital of Malaysia which has been set to achieve a
70% share of all travels by public transport in the city area. However, the current modal split
between the public transport and private transport is 15:85. In order to understand travelers’
willingness to use the public transport, a conceptual model has been developed to determine
the factors that affect them to use the public transport instead of travelling in their own cars.
The conceptualized relationship model was analyzed and tested using an analytical technique,
known as the structural equation model (SEM). Various variables such as service quality,
environmental impact, attitude and behavior intention were used in the structural model. The
database consisted of a survey of 290 car users in the Putrajaya city and all of them are
workers working in Putrajaya. Results indicate that the service quality and attitude are found
to have positive effects on the behavioral intention of taking the public transport. Other than
this, this study also shows that the service quality and environmental impact have some
positive influences on the attitude in using the public transport. However, environmental
impact has no significant, positive and direct effect on behavioral intention. The results of this
study demonstrate that the model that was developed is useful in predicting the public transport and it could provide a more complete understanding of behavioral intention towards public transport use.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
