Welcome to English 4 U, a new and
unique magazine for learners of
English in the Arab world.
For many of us, English is the main
language of communication. Although
a wide variety of magazines are
available, we believe that a magazine
just for learners of English will
stimulate an interest in the language
and help to develop the skills of UAE
nationals and residents.
In each magazine we will introduce
new topics to add to those already
covered in previous editions and so
you will be able to build up a useful
reference collection.
English 4 U will be issued every
month and will be delivered free to
a wide range of outlets across the
country. Please contact us with your
comments and ideas. Our details are
shown below.
The magazine has three levels:
easy
medium
hard
We hope you like our magazine.
Happy reading !

If you wish to make a delicious strawberry mousse*, you will need
three cups of sliced strawberries, two medium size cartons of plain
yoghurt and one tablespoon of honey. Place all the ingredients in
a blender and blend until they are smooth. Then put the mousse
in the refrigerator for at least two hours and do not serve it until
it is very cold. This is a very refreshing dessert*
* for two or three
people.
If you have made up your mind to be really helpful and prepare the
whole meal, you will be able to make a tuna salad that the whole
family is going to love. You’ll need one big tin of tuna, chilled and
drained, one tin of sweet corn, half a cup of mayonnaise, and one
teaspoon of mustard. Blend the mayonnaise and mustard, then
add the tuna and sweet corn. Put in a big salad bowl and decorate
with slices of tomato or avocado and olives, or all these.
Now answer the questions about these texts which appear on the next page.

In1844,theBritishParliamentdecidedthatthenewbuildingsfor
the Houses of Parliament should include a tower and a clock.
In the beginning, Big Ben referred to the hour bell of the Great
Clock of Westminster but now it refers to the clock itself.
The bell weighs more than 13 tons. The clock is famous for its
accuracy. The hands of the clock are 2.7 and 4.3 metres long and
the clock tower rises to 98 metres.
The bells rang out across London for the first time on 31st May
1859.
The clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison. There are
numerous suggestions about how it was given its name but the
most common theory is that it was named after Sir Ben
Benjamin
Hall, the commissioner of works.

The Sharjah Museums Department has restored
some historical houses and established museums in
the heritage area of Sharjah. These places are all well
worth a visit for both children and adults.
The restoration of Bait Al Naboodah and the
surrounding area took place in the early 1990s. This
house is located in the Heritage Area of Al Sheyoukh.
Everything in Bait Al Naboodah offers a fascinating
insight of a bygone era.
The construction of this family home of Obaid Al
Shamsi (Al Naboodah) began in 1845. It was built in
the traditional Gulf style and took into consideration
the climate, natural resources and social requirements
of privacy and security. Many of the doors and pillars
are made from teakwood, the flat roof is made from
mangrove poles and palm matting, and the walls from
stone and coral.
The house has three parts – the main building and
living areas, the adjacent majlis and the kitchen
annex. Eleven rooms make up the ground floor, all
around a large courtyard in which you will find a
palm tree and an almond tree. There are a few more
rooms on the upper floor.

¤Keep it clear and simple by using common words, bullet points

¤ Always write a subject. This gives the reader an idea of the
content of the message.
¤ Avoid abbreviations such as AFAIK (as far as I know), B4N

will understand them. They should not be used in formal or
business emails.
It is now difficult to imagine life without the internet and emails.

Email messages have become an important way to communicate with

Writing emails
Here are some
tips to follow
when writing
an email
In Touch Day and Night
¤ Use colour. This is a great way of breaking up your email to
help the reader scan and highlight important information.
¤ Smileys or emoticons can make a message fun and cheerful
but only use these if you think the reader will understand
them. They are not suitable in formal or business emails.
¤ Only use capital letters at the start of each sentence. Don‛t
use ALL CAPITALS for the entire text. Some people
consider it to be the equivalent of shouting.
¤Do not use offensive or inappropriate language.
¤Check your spelling before sending the message.
¤Only send a copy of the message to someone when it is really
necessary.
¤Double check the address of the person you
are sending it to.

IELTS and TOEFL
What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL?
IELTS stands for ‘International English Language Testing System‛
and TOEFL stands for ‘Test of English as a Foreign Language‛. Both
are used to prove English ability when applying to study at a university.
IELTS is a British English exam. Most British universities recognise
IELTS scores. TOEFL is an American exam using American English. It
is recognised by most American universities.

A customer ordered some coffee in a café. The waiter arrived
with the coffee and placed it on the table. After a few
moments, the customer called for the waiter.
‘Waiter,‛ he said. ‘There's dirt in my coffee!‛
‘That's not surprising, Sir,‛ replied the waiter.
‘It was ground only half an hour ago.‛

The hands of the clock are 2.7 and 4.3 metres long and the clock tower rises to 98 metres. The bells rang out across London for the first time on 31st May 1859. The clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison. There are numerous suggestions about how it was given its name but the most common theory is that it was named after Sir Ben Benjamin Hall, the commissioner of works. These places are all well worth a visit for both children and adults. The restoration of Bait Al Naboodah and the surrounding area took place in the early 1990s. This house is located in the Heritage Area of Al Sheyoukh. Everything in Bait Al Naboodah offers a fascinating insight of a bygone era. The construction of this family home of Obaid Al Shamsi (Al Naboodah) began in 1845. It was built in the traditional Gulf style and took into consideration the climate, natural resources and social requirements of privacy and security. Many of the doors and pillars are made from teakwood, the flat roof is made from mangrove poles and palm matting, and the walls from stone and coral. The house has three parts – the main building and living areas, the adjacent majlis and the kitchen annex. Eleven rooms make up the ground floor, all around a large courtyard in which you will find a palm tree and an almond tree. There are a few more rooms on the upper floor. 38 38 Sharjah Museums Department P O Box 39939 Sharjah Tel 06 5566002 Fax 06 5566003 E-mail info@sharjahmuseums.ae www.sharjahmuseums.ae Bait Al Naboodah Opening Times Weekdays: 8 am – 8 pm Friday: 5 pm – 8pm Times vary during the month of Ramadan and Public Holidays.
