Federation and Interoperability in the Nectar Research CloudOpenStack

The Nectar Research Cloud provides an OpenStack cloud for Australia’s academic researchers. Since its inception in 2012 it has grown steadily to over 30,000 CPUs, with over 10,000 registered users from more than 50 research institutions. It is different to many clouds in being a federation across eight organisations, each of which runs cloud infrastructure in one or more data centres and contributes to a distributed help desk and user support. A Nectar core services team runs centralised cloud services. This presentation will give an overview of the experiences, challenges and benefits of running a federated OpenStack cloud and a short demonstration on using the Nectar cloud. We will also describe some current approaches that are looking to extend this federation to encompass other institutions including some in New Zealand, to extend the infrastructure using commercial cloud providers, and to move towards interoperability with the growing number of international science and research clouds through the new Open Research Cloud initiative.

Volcanic eruptions are among the most spectacular and dangerous phenomena on Earth, capable of generating disasters at various scales. The Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories initiatives (GSNL) today is a network of 11 Supersites, including volcanoes and seismic areas. Complex algorithms are used to analyse these data and important information on the volcano activity. In addition to computing power and resources, researchers from the geo-gnsl community, as many other data-intensive science communities, are calling for innovative ways to manage their data, methods and other resources, which can enhance the visibility of scientific breakthroughs, encourage reuse, and foster a broader research accessibility. In this contribution we present the results of EVER-EST project (H2020-EINFRA-2015-1), in which we created in collaboration with different partners a virtual research environment (VRE) for Earth Science (https://vre.ever-est.eu/), embracing the research object concept and technologies at its core.

The overall goal is to provide a consolidated bleeding-edge environment to support NASA's computational and analysis requirements for science and engineering applications."
Dr. Rupak Biswas is currently the Director of Exploration Technology at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., and has held this Senior Executive Service (SES) position since January 2016. In this role, he in charge of planning, directing, and coordinating the technology development and operational activities of the organization that comprises of advanced supercomputing, human systems integration, intelligent systems, and entry systems technology. The directorate consists of approximately 700 employees with an annual budget of $160 million, and includes two of NASA’s critical and consolidated infrastructures: arc jet testing facility and supercomputing facility. He is also the Manager of the NASA-wide High End Computing Capability Project that provides a full range of advanced computational resources and services to numerous programs across the agency. In addition, he leads the emerging quantum computing effort for NASA.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
