Identifying and Resolving Consistency Issues between Model RepresentationsIvan Ruchkin
An overview research talk given during at JPL on July 22, 2015.
Abstract:
Today’s complex cyber-physical systems require the use of a variety of models to capture different aspects of these systems: physical models, software models, control models, and so on. A critical challenge is to ensure consistency and completeness of these models. In this talk we describe an approach that uses architectural models as the basis for reconciliation. Specifically, a base architecture of the system is used as a unifying representation to compare the structure and semantics of the associated models through a set of architectural projections, or views. Each model is related to the base architecture through the abstraction of a corresponding architectural view, which captures structural and semantic correspondences between model elements and system entities. The use of the architectural view framework to relate system models from different domains is illustrated in the context of a quad-rotor air vehicle and an on-going collaboration with Toyota on future braking system design.

(The application of geospatial linked data)
Presentation Location and Context World, 2015. Palo Alto, CA November 3-4, 2015.
Abstract: Creating useful local context requires big data platforms and marketplaces. Contextual awareness is relevant to location based marketing, first responders, urban planners and many others. Location-aware mobile devices are revolutionizing how consumers and brands interact in the physical world. Situational awareness is a key element to efficiently handling any emergency response. In all cases, big data processing and high velocity streaming of location based data creates the richest contextual awareness. Data from many sources including IoT devices, sensor webs, surveillance and crowdsourcing are combined with semantically-rich urban and indoor data models. The resulting context information is delivered to and shared by mobile devices in connected and disconnected operations. Standards play a key role in establishing context platforms and marketplaces. Successful approaches will consolidate data from ubiquitous sensing technologies on a common space-time basis to enabled context-aware analysis of environmental and social dynamics.
Software Architecture and the role of the Architect has been discussed and deliberated in detail. Architecture still plays major role in success of projects. While the fundamentals remain strong, how architects can contribute in teams success while in agile is an ongoing journey. As the team member endowed with skills and wisdom acquired over the experience frame, we argue Architects are best positioned to prepare a road-map of architectural aspects and participate in planning together with product owners and release owners thus enabling a more meaningful planning and guidance system. Based on Risk and Cost Based Architecture concept by Eltjo Poort and based on CAFFEA framework by Jan Bosch and team, we applied it in projects which led to seeing it as a six stepped approach described in the slides.

All predictions are wrong; some are useful. This presentation offers a slate of geospatial trends developed in discussion with the OGC Board of Directors and expanded in an OGC blog series. These geospatial technology issues were developed by reviewing over 200 articles from geospatial publications as well as from information technology journals (IEEE, ACM, etc.).
These "Ripe Issues" of geospatial technology identify areas where further development of open standards can lead to great benefit:
* The Power of Location
* Internet of Things
* Mobile Development
* Indoor Frontier
* Cartographers of the future
* Big Processing of GeoData
* Smart Cities

2013 Enterprise Track, Using Spatial ETL in a Multi-vendor Enterprise GIS Env...GIS in the Rockies
Large, infrastructure-based organizations such as utility companies often find that they need to operate with multiple GIS and CAD systems as part of their computing environments. This can create numerous challenges with data management and sharing of information within the organization. These issues can be addressed in part by the use of Spatial Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) technologies working in an enterprise environment along with a common data repository.
This presentation highlights experiences SBS has had in using Spatial ETL technologies in organizations to provide an advanced architecture for sharing spatial data. There are a number of technical considerations that must be addressed in these environments. These include:
• Support for multiple GIS platforms that all access a common data base
• A common, canonical data model that supports existing data models in the enterprise
• Cross platform conflict resolution
• A common data validation framework
• Global ID management
• A comprehensive network model to support business application requirements
• Scalability to support a very large user community
• Integration with other systems to support business workflows and advanced analytics
This presentation is about a lecture I gave within the "Software systems and services" immigration course at the Gran Sasso Science Institute, L'Aquila (Italy): http://cs.gssi.infn.it/.

Architect’s Open-Source Guide for a Data Mesh ArchitectureDatabricks
Data Mesh is an innovative concept addressing many data challenges from an architectural, cultural, and organizational perspective. But is the world ready to implement Data Mesh?
In this session, we will review the importance of core Data Mesh principles, what they can offer, and when it is a good idea to try a Data Mesh architecture. We will discuss common challenges with implementation of Data Mesh systems and focus on the role of open-source projects for it. Projects like Apache Spark can play a key part in standardized infrastructure platform implementation of Data Mesh. We will examine the landscape of useful data engineering open-source projects to utilize in several areas of a Data Mesh system in practice, along with an architectural example. We will touch on what work (culture, tools, mindset) needs to be done to ensure Data Mesh is more accessible for engineers in the industry.
The audience will leave with a good understanding of the benefits of Data Mesh architecture, common challenges, and the role of Apache Spark and other open-source projects for its implementation in real systems.
This session is targeted for architects, decision-makers, data-engineers, and system designers.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
