The 1915 Canakkale Bridge and Motorway Project involves building an 88 km motorway and 13 km of access roads between Malkara and Canakkale in Turkey. A key part of the project is the 1915 Canakkale Bridge, which will be the world's longest mid-span suspension bridge at 2,023 meters and highest tower suspension bridge at 334 meters once completed. The project secured 2.265 billion EUR in financing from Turkish and foreign banks in 2018. Potential issues of concern during the operation of the project include increased vehicle emissions causing pollution, rapid urbanization from more people in the region, and the bridge being subject to severe environmental conditions like earthquakes and strong winds that require ongoing monitoring and analysis of the bridge

The £28m project has received funding from the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) as well as support from the Department for Infrastructure (NI), Department Transport, Tourism and Sport (Ireland) as well as Derry City and Strabane Council.
The first phase of the project, completed in October 2019 includes 1.8km of new railway track, signaling systems, new platforms and canopies as well as the re-development and restoration of the listed building and links to the city Greenway.
Phase two of the project which comprised a new Park and Ride facility, bus turning facilities and public realm space was completed in November 2020.
The event gave an insight to the challenges of planning and delivery of a complex multi-disciplinary transport project, including the restoration of a listed building.

Operation Bridgeguard, or Bridgeguard 3 (BG3), is the National Rail assessment and strengthening/reconstruction (or permanent mitigation) programme for public road-over-rail ‘overline’ bridges. This was instigated by the UK Government’s reaction
to adopting the European Council Directive 85/3/EEC12 , under the European Union (EU), that Member States must accept articulated vehicles and drawbar-trailer combinations with 5 or more axles weighting up to 40 Tonnes (T – Metric) for international journeys on UK roads by 1st January 1999.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

2. PROJECT OVERVIEW
1915Canakkale Bridge and Motorway Project
comprises 88 km of motorway including the
1915Canakkale Bridge and 13 km of access
roads stretching between Malkara and
Canakkale.
When completed, the 1915Canakkale Bridge
will be the longest mid-span suspension
bridge in the world with its mid-span of
2,023 meters and it will also have the
reputation of being the world's highest
tower suspension bridge with a height of
334 meters.
3. PROJECT FINANCE
• For the 1915Çanakkale Bridge and
Motorway Project, finance agreements
were signed with 25 financial institutions
from 10 countries on 16 March 2018,
securing a 15 year term loan with a grace
period of 5 years, for a total sum of 2.265
billion EUR. %70 of the loan was provided
by 19 foreign banks and financial
institutions, and %30 by Turkish banks.

6. ISSUES OF CONCERN
Issues of concern can be discussed only for the operation period of the lifecycle of the project, as
the project is about to be completed:
• Vehicles passing through the
motorway will increase the emissions,
causing pollution
• New motorway will attract people
outside the region which will increase
the population
• Land prices will hike and rapid
urbanization will evolve
Recommendations
Introduce speed limits by smart systems to improve the
air quality, reduce stop-start requirements
Implement planned urbanization (an urban/spatial plan
that addresses density, land use, streets and public
spaces, and the definition of public and private
domains through urban planning and design; 2. a legal
plan that contains the rules of land subdivision and
land occupation, as well as the regulatory frameworks
governing planned urbanization; and 3. a financial plan
to mobilize resources for its realization )
7. ISSUES OF CONCERN
• The bridge will be subject to severe
environment conditions such as
seismic movement and hard winds in
the region.
Recommendations
• monitor bridge health against seismic
movements and hard winds
• calibrate numerical models that can
reproduce structural responses under
different actions
• verify the achievement of performance
goals defined by codes
