Mobile Learning:
Teacher Created Class iPhone App
Planning Stage: I chose to use my iPhone and
attempt to create an application to use in class. I
wanted to use an iPhone App because I see so
many students attached to their phones and they will
do almost anything for opportunities to use the
phone in class legitimately. In order to create this
application I needed software. I chose
http://ibuildapp.com/ because it is web-based so I
didn’t have to download anything and it was free.
I’m a teacher and I think the word “free”
accompanies almost every search I do on the
Internet. This was hands-down the scariest final I
have every attempted.
Crowell’s Class iPhone App
This application’s main duty is to keep kids
informed of what is going on in class and
give them the ability to communicate their
learning and just communicate in general.
The application will have a one stop shop
for our class website, a twitter account for
our class, and Facebook page for our
account. The target learner is my middle
school students. It’s essential that they
have access to an iPhone or iPad to use
this application. At this time I would guess
that half the students in my class have an
iPhone, iPad, or have a parent with one.
Unfortunately that means half of my
students would not be able to use it. I don’t
think it will take long before everyone has
access.
Introduction
Twitter
When I first read about
using Twitter in the
classroom I thought
people were crazy.
When I read about
uses I thought it was
genius. I would love to
let my blurting
students tweet their
blurts silently. Best
use of technology,
ever.
Facebook
Our school and our
district have Facebook
pages. Students do
not have access to
Facebook at school
but parents get most
of their school
announcements from
those Facebook
pages. It might not be
possible to have a
class Facebook page
for jr. high but I think
we could use it for
good.
Class Website
I use weebly.com to
host my class
website. I put links,
assignments, rubrics,
and messages on the
website. This is a
button on the App.
Students that do not
have access to the
application will still
have access to the
class website.
Contacts
AS of today my
students do not have
school email accounts.
This is coming but isn’t
scheduled until next
year. I think it’s
unthinkable for
students not to have
email in our digital
society. But it is going
to happen.
Support
If this
Application
becomes
reality I would
hope I would
use it in a
community of
teachers and I
would not be
the only
contact here.
Conclusion
I was not looking forward to this final. I read the expectations about 2 days after the
deadline to drop passed. I use the excuses that: I’m too busy to create and learn one
more piece of technology; My students have enough technology they don’t use
already; testing is coming up…
I’m not going to minimize the great amount of time it took for me to wrap my head around
this assignment or the brain power it took to create the most generic and simple
application. But, I actually enjoyed this and I’m thinking of having my jr. high students
try to create their own apps or at least imagine some legitimate uses for all the
buttons I put on the application.
Mobile learning is growing at breakneck speed. I just read about another school district
that is opening an online school next year where students can learn from home OR
use their mobile devices to learn from anywhere. Instead of having one online school
to choose from, students are learning from a brick and mortar district on their phone.
Amazing.

  • 1. Mobile Learning: Teacher Created Class iPhone App Planning Stage: I chose to use my iPhone and attempt to create an application to use in class. I wanted to use an iPhone App because I see so many students attached to their phones and they will do almost anything for opportunities to use the phone in class legitimately. In order to create this application I needed software. I chose http://ibuildapp.com/ because it is web-based so I didn’t have to download anything and it was free. I’m a teacher and I think the word “free” accompanies almost every search I do on the Internet. This was hands-down the scariest final I have every attempted.

Crowell’s Class iPhone App This application’s main duty is to keep kids informed of what is going on in class and give them the ability to communicate their learning and just communicate in general. The application will have a one stop shop for our class website, a twitter account for our class, and Facebook page for our account. The target learner is my middle school students. It’s essential that they have access to an iPhone or iPad to use this application. At this time I would guess that half the students in my class have an iPhone, iPad, or have a parent with one. Unfortunately that means half of my students would not be able to use it. I don’t think it will take long before everyone has access.
  • 4. Twitter When I first read about using Twitter in the classroom I thought people were crazy. When I read about uses I thought it was genius. I would love to let my blurting students tweet their blurts silently. Best use of technology, ever.
  • 5. Facebook Our school and our district have Facebook pages. Students do not have access to Facebook at school but parents get most of their school announcements from those Facebook pages. It might not be possible to have a class Facebook page for jr. high but I think we could use it for good.
  • 6. Class Website I use weebly.com to host my class website. I put links, assignments, rubrics, and messages on the website. This is a button on the App. Students that do not have access to the application will still have access to the class website.
  • 7. Contacts AS of today my students do not have school email accounts. This is coming but isn’t scheduled until next year. I think it’s unthinkable for students not to have email in our digital society. But it is going to happen.
  • 8. Support If this Application becomes reality I would hope I would use it in a community of teachers and I would not be the only contact here.
  • 9. Conclusion I was not looking forward to this final. I read the expectations about 2 days after the deadline to drop passed. I use the excuses that: I’m too busy to create and learn one more piece of technology; My students have enough technology they don’t use already; testing is coming up… I’m not going to minimize the great amount of time it took for me to wrap my head around this assignment or the brain power it took to create the most generic and simple application. But, I actually enjoyed this and I’m thinking of having my jr. high students try to create their own apps or at least imagine some legitimate uses for all the buttons I put on the application. Mobile learning is growing at breakneck speed. I just read about another school district that is opening an online school next year where students can learn from home OR use their mobile devices to learn from anywhere. Instead of having one online school to choose from, students are learning from a brick and mortar district on their phone. Amazing.
