Hundreds of stone Buddhist sculptures from the 6th-9th centuries were discovered buried in a pit in 1996 in Qingzhou, China, during construction work. The sculptures were found at the site of the destroyed Longxing Temple and were buried in the 12th century for unknown reasons. The refined sculptures depict the evolution of Buddhist art in China from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties, when it reached its peak.
