This document discusses guidelines for determining the current carrying capacity of vias based on conceptual observations. It suggests that a via's current carrying capacity is determined by its cross-sectional area, like a trace. The cross-sectional area of a via is proportional to its diameter and wall thickness. For a via's cross-sectional area to equal a trace's, their diameters and thicknesses must be related by an equation. If thicknesses are the same, the via's diameter should be at least the trace width divided by 3. Multiple smaller vias are not more effective than one larger via of equal total diameter. Testing is needed to validate these conclusions.
