Antimicrobial resistance occurs as microorganisms develop resistance to drugs used to treat them. It is caused by overuse of antibiotics for minor conditions, improper use of antibiotics, and lack of new drug development. Several bacteria have become resistant to multiple drugs, including MRSA, VRE, drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, and CRE. To control resistance, antibiotics must only be used when needed, prescribed correctly, and not used to promote animal growth. Vaccination and handwashing can also help reduce overuse of antibiotics. Natural antibiotics like garlic, honey, and ginger may help treat some infections as well.
