Open Source and Open Innovation - Dr. Sabine Brunswicker - Red Hat Summit 2016Purdue RCODI
From Open Source Towards Open Innovation: Fostering Corporate Innovation with Open Source Software (OSS) Communities presented by Dr. Sabine Brunswicker.
Dr. Sabine Brunswicker presented the latest work on how firms and individuals collaborate in an open source software community in the Red Hat Summit 2016. In particular, she highlighted how firms, whether they are OSS vendors or OSS uses, and also the individual developer, can support each other in order to successfully integrating new features in the software. Red Hat Summit is the premier open source technology event to showcase the latest and greatest in cloud computing, platform, virtualization, middleware, storage, and systems management technologies.
Open source software (OSS) is booming. Working the OSS way has become the new standard of software development. This trend has also changed the nature of OSS communities. While originally the domain of hobbyists and hackers, OSS communities are now attracting the participation of firms, both small and large ones. Indeed, OSS communities offer firms the opportunities to engage in what experts call ‘open innovation’. They open up to OSS communities and participate in OSS communities in order to create direct and indirect corporate innovation benefits. This presentation will focus on open innovation for new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, which bring together OSS vendors, OSS customers, as well as independent developers. One of the prominent examples of these new OSS communities is the OpenStack community in the area of cloud computing. These communities create unique opportunities not only for vendor but also for OSS customers to actively shape the agenda of the development activities and also implement this agenda. At the same time, these communities also expose firms to new management challenges given the size and diversity of the actors involved. In my talk I will provide very recent insights gained from a big data analysis focused on the ‘inner working mechanism’ of the OpenStack community. A deep dive into the contribution behavior of different vendors and OSS customers suggest that firms need to align their open innovation strategy with their idiosyncratic innovation interest, the development capabilities of their own employees, and their role in the community. For example, firms that seek to drive more radical changes in the OSS software should behave differently than those firms that are more focused on immediate quality improvements. In sum, the presentation will give those firms, which already participate in new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, as well as those ones, that only use OSS products, practical guidelines in how to use open innovation for the new ‘breed’ of OSS communities. Concrete examples will depict what kinds of features contributors suggested and how OSS vendors, OSS customers and independent developers collaborate in implementing those features.

The Market for Open Innovation Platforms: Deciding If and Where to Invest - J...Jose Briones
Open innovation became a key success factor for many companies today. But which is the right method for open innovation? Which are the criteria to plan an open innovation project? Which intermediary or service provider has specific knowledge and expertise in, e.g., crowdsourcing, the lead user method, Netnography, idea contests, technology scouting, or broadcast search? This interactive debate will analyze different platforms that are meant to accelerate innovation. You will leave with a better understanding of the options that are out there and whether it makes sense for you to invest in a certain platform. In reaching their conclusion, innovation professionals must:
Weigh the pros and cons of turning to a technology provider to help solve your OI needs
Understand the landscape of open innovation intermediaries and platforms
Make the most of your investment in an OI platform

The Commercialising Metamaterials Innovation Network brings you its next workshop in our winter series. This webinar will bring together a variety of experts who can offer organisations the support they need to successfully scale up and commercialise.
Once an aspect of metamaterials technology has been identified with the potential in a particular application, there is a need to look to scale up the production to develop demonstrators and prototypes. This activity is often associated with a start-up or SME since the technology is brought in from research. The needs of these small enterprises in progressing, from this first step to commercialisation, can include a variety of services offered from academia to investors. Very often investors will only be interested in further steps to commercialise or upscale.
This webinar will bring together a variety of experts who can offer organisations the support they need to successfully scale up and commercialise. This includes modelling services from academia; advanced manufacturing scale up from catapults and academia; innovation funding and investor access from Government-funded organisations; early-stage design expertise to ensure capture of best product and application, to name just a few.

Leading Innovation and Change: Best Practice Case Study
Client - a company synonymous with the term innovation. Since its inception, the company founders have instilled a belief in unique product creation, including life altering product innovations such as the light bulb envelope, TV tube, and optical waveguides. This concept of innovation has been deemed one of the company's most essential quality programs, bridging functional groups within the organization, renewing itself through continued time and iterations. For the client, innovation not only challenges traditional ways to thinking, but has become a key impetus to drive change. Innovation converts ideas into opportunities.
The client began its journey with the realization that the rate of new product development would be insufficient to maintain company profitability in the future. In the late 1970's and early 1980's there was a cycle of small pockets of promising technological advances, defensive moves, and diminishing returns. Previously the company's innovation processes had been defined only within the areas of research, product development, and engineering. The client began by analyzing past innovations and the successes and failures associated with each, and benchmarking their own best practices and lessons learned.
The client has defined innovative effectiveness as: requiring an understanding of overall corporate and business strategies; developing organizational roadmaps based on customers, the market, competitors, strengths and weaknesses, and resources; ability to evaluate, prioritize, and select projects; and executing the selected project well. The key elements of innovation intervention are: an innovation task force, composed of key innovators; the utilization of company history as a resource for innovation; a focus on strengths and resources in a project of paramount importance, referred to as "flexible critical mass;" and a two-and-a-half-day innovation conference for 200 company leaders which focuses on reintrodu.

Attendees will learn how to optimize operational efficiency, manage expenses, and increase revenue through innovative marketing and customer engagement techniques.
Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. Sector: UK Government, Ministry of Defence
Our brief: How can the UK defence sector be more open and collaborative?
What we did: Our project ‘Opening the Door’ used stakeholder research and strategy workshops to prepare
the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) for open innovation. We diagnosed MOD barriers
to open innovation, measured different aspects of the organisation’s readiness levels and designed a new
sector-wide system for collaboration.
What happened: OpenWorks created a UK defence open innovation blueprint that was accepted in full and is
now the subject of major upstream investment, up to £350m in the medium term. The blueprint helped the
MOD respond positively to a UK Government Strategic Defence Review and show how to network the nation’s
defence and promote UK growth via innovative SMEs and prime defence suppliers. 100%Open has since been
approached by a number of UK defence primes with a view to future partnerships.

Our brief: How can Barclaycard use open innovation to help reposition Barclays as the ‘Go-To Bank’?
What we did: We used internal and external stakeholder interviews, strategic analysis and desk research to
develop as open innovation blueprint for sourcing new mobile payment technologies for small businesses.
What happened: We concluded that open innovation could increase Barclaycard’s agility and relevance, and
that interesting new service providers might even be found within Barclaycard’s existing customer base. Our
recommendations were accepted in full and are helping to inform the future direction of Barclaycard.

Our brief: How can we enable greater collaborative innovation amongst our globally distributed teams?
What we did: 100%Open designed and delivered a series immersive and collaborative online Jams and also
hosted a series of highly creative face-to-face proposition development workshops. Both were designed to
bring together strong technical knowledge, expert facilitation, structured tools and design thinking. The
overall aim was to collaboratively develop new products and processes in response to major business needs.
What happened: These workshops have fostered new collaborations, bringing together R&D scientists, brand
teams and external experts from around the work to work together on new innovation opportunities. Several
new research projects and partnerships have been initiated.

Sector: Transport
Our brief: How can we change the way people connect with cars?
What we did: Microsoft and Nissan challenged MSN readers to submit a ground-breaking idea. A judging team
picked three contestants to take part in a two-day Jam workshop. Armed with selected tools from the
100%Open Innovation Toolkit, our team worked in collaboration alongside industry specialists from Nissan
and Microsoft to help the finalists hone their ideas into cutting-edge technologies for the motoring world.
What happened: After the workshop a website was created to enable the public to choose a winner to get a
trip to Seattle and San Diego to the visit Nissan and Microsoft’s R&D facilities. Aaron Daubney, a physics
student at St. Andrews University, won with his idea ‘The Time Machine’. Aaron’s concept was an interactive
artificial intelligence that optimises your time in the vehicle.

how people will move in the future.
What is happening now: 100%Open is crowdsourcing fresh insights and connecting with new technology
partners that will propel Ford into new markets. We are building and recruiting global innovator crowds and
preparing new collaborative business models. These will have the potential for new revenue streams whilst

Our brief: Can open innovation promote economic growth in Colombia?
What we did: On behalf of the Colombian Government 100%Open designed and ran a global open innovation
programme called CO4 for 11 major Colombian organisations, from ship-building and finance to white goods
and confectionery. 100%Open and local partners Enlace created and ran 31 challenges to find new
technologies and partners. CO4 included collaboration skills development for the Colombian companies and
the 100%Open airlock process to create mutual trust and viable partnerships.
What happened: Over the course of 18 months we used our communications team and Venture Radar service
to build a global network of potential partners. We ran 10 national launch events across Colombia and
publicised the challenges globally. Our Discovery Platform received nearly 400 high quality submissions from
Asia and Europe as well as across South America. Each of the 11 Colombian organisations forged one or more
valuable new partnerships with entrepreneurs or new suppliers and the country now has a thriving open
innovation sector.

25. Union is 100%Open’s global network of over 3,500 innovation and marketing professionals in large
organisations. Union exists for the sole purpose of creating value by connecting contacts across every sector of
industry.
We meet up for an evening each quarter, hosted at a member’s HQ, in London and in Geneva. We have an
online community to keep the buzz going between meet-ups. To give you a flavour, recent events have taken
place at Google, Arup, Barclays and BBC in the UK and at Bacardi Martini, DuPont and CERN in Geneva. One of
the barriers to effective open innovation is the inability to meet enough interesting and different people in the
hurly-burly of corporate life. Union enables members to quickly source innovative technologies or new
partners for collaboration.
