This document discusses strategies for coping with the abundance of information in the digital age. It begins by introducing the presenter, Michael Lascarides from the National Library of New Zealand. It then provides 7 mind-blowing facts about technological changes, such as the dramatic decrease in digital storage costs and the rapid growth of mobile phone usage. Finally, it outlines 10 coping strategies for libraries in a world where information is abundant rather than scarce, such as being open, putting holes in walls, and focusing on relevance rather than access.
Chau Au presents on her experience volunteering as a Code Club facilitator at the local library. She discusses how she got involved in Code Club and shares details about running coding clubs for children over multiple terms, including the types of projects and curriculum used, resources available, and the types and number of students. She also provides case studies of three students who demonstrated growth in confidence, independence, and problem-solving over the terms. Overall, the presentation emphasizes the benefits of coding for children and provides recommendations for others interested in starting coding clubs.
Digital preservation aims to maintain access to digital materials over time despite changes in technology. It faces challenges such as the obsolescence of storage technologies, instability of storage media, and maintaining the integrity of digital materials. Recommendations include starting preservation close to creation to ensure future access and increasing awareness of preservation techniques. While skepticism remains, institutions like the Library and Archives of Canada are mandated to preserve digital heritage for present and future generations through continued migration to new technologies and formats.
The TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment comprises 7 core units and 3 elective units for a total of 10 units. The core units cover planning and conducting assessment, designing learning programs, and delivering group-based and workplace learning. Completing this qualification provides the competencies required to deliver training and conduct competency-based assessment. Benefits of obtaining this qualification include it being an Australian recognized qualification, increasing skills and knowledge in vocational education and training, and offering career mobility and development opportunities.
Digital preservation is important because digital records can easily be lost forever if not properly preserved. Computers operate using binary code that needs file formats to give meaning to strings of zeros and ones. Relying on a single vendor for file format support poses risks, so using open formats is better. Tools exist to detect file formats, migrate files to open formats, and wrap files in metadata to aid long term preservation and management of digital records.
Training packages provide guidance for trainers but do not prescribe how training should be delivered. A learning program is developed by trainers to meet learners' needs and circumstances. It identifies the purpose, target group, outcomes, learning activities, resources, and includes a plan for achieving objectives. Learning programs consider factors such as learners' characteristics, skills, environment, and costs of delivery.
The document identifies risks associated with home library services and provides best practice recommendations to manage those risks. It discusses risks related to new members joining, assessing delivery locations, making deliveries, staff/volunteer identification, working with volunteers, manual handling, first aid protocols, difficult clients, deceased clients, and lending electrical equipment. The conclusion notes that demand for home library services is expected to increase substantially in the coming decades due to an aging population, while the use of technology may present new safety risks to manage.
Competency-based assessment in vocational education and training (VET) measures people against defined standards rather than comparing them against each other. Evidence for assessment can come from samples of a candidate's work, observation checklists, interviews, supervisor reports, answers to questions, and documents completed by the candidate. The document outlines how to contribute to the assessment process by planning to gather evidence for assessment according to competency standards.
The document discusses the changing role of technology in education and the challenges and opportunities it presents. It outlines rising expectations for teachers to incorporate technology while meeting diverse student needs. Effective technology integration requires sufficient resources, appropriate software, meaningful learning experiences, and skills development for teachers and students. While critics worry about technology's distractions, advocates believe it can enhance learning when used properly. The role of technology in education will continue growing if implemented successfully.
This document discusses planning, organizing, and facilitating learning in the workplace. It covers separating from learners when goals are achieved or time periods have elapsed, conducting self-evaluations and reviews to assess learning outcomes, and identifying different types of data like reactions, learning, behavior change, and results to analyze through applying proper record-keeping procedures.
Simon Brown will give a final workshop presentation for SkillsTech Australia on integrating language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills into vocational education and training (VET) practice. The presentation will cover analyzing LLN requirements, selecting and using resources and strategies to address skill needs, using specialist LLN support when needed, and evaluating the effectiveness of learning support and assessment strategies in addressing LLN requirements. It will also discuss determining the LLN skills required by training specifications and essential for workplace performance, as well as determining the LLN skills of learner groups using validated tools and other sources.
The document discusses defining the parameters of a learning program, including identifying the training specification, units of competency, modules, and regulatory or licensing requirements. It also covers determining the target group for the training, evaluating the learning environment and any health and safety risks, considering legal and organizational needs, and establishing the timeframe for completing the program. The overall goal is to understand all relevant factors for designing a customized learning program.

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.
In this presentation, Verhoef unveils his company’s pioneering chip technology and demonstrates its capacity to deliver exceptional frames-per-second performance across a range of standard computer vision networks typical of applications in security, surveillance and the industrial sector. This shows that advanced computer vision can be accessible and efficient, even at the very edge of our technological ecosystem.

We'll see, what techniques helped to keep the web resources available for Ukrainians and how AWS improved DDoS protection for all customers based on Ukraine experience
In the realm of cybersecurity, offensive security practices act as a critical shield. By simulating real-world attacks in a controlled environment, these techniques expose vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. This proactive approach allows manufacturers to identify and fix weaknesses, significantly enhancing system security.

Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
2. #1Save Recipes.
Using the Evernote Web Clipper (download at evernote.com to any web browser)
you can easily save your favourite recipes and organise them into a recipes folder.
If you have a cooking book you can use the camera scanner feature on your mobile
to scan in the pages into a note. Alternatively, create you own recipes using the
checklist feature. I personally love to save dishes I’ve tried from overseas into a
“food lover’s” folder so I can remember my favourite Taipei dishes and source the
recipes later on. Don’t forget to share your recipe folder with friends!
3. #2Save your car rego.
Have you ever waited in line for a long time at the department of transport only to
fill out a form and completely forget your license plate number? I have been in this
situation! Fortunately I had a picture of my car and plate in Evernote with the name
“car rego”. You will be surprised how and when this can come in handy!
4. #3Capture idea’s from conversation.
Finished that work meeting or brainstorming session? Use the camera scanner to
capture your hand notes or the whiteboard scribbles. Evernote uses state of the art
OCR technology to enable you to search for keywords that are in images! Impress
your CEO by how organised and efficient you are at remembering conversations
or meetings.
5. #4Take a picture of your haircut.
This is by far the most creative and unusual way to use Evernote! But I find with
travelling you sometimes can’t access your regular barber, so when you get the
‘best’ haircut of your life - take a picture! Then you can refer it next time you’re in
the chair. The result = consistent quality.
6. #5Create and #OnLoan tag.
Have you ever loaned something to a friend and forgotten about it? I’ve loaned
dozens of books and I’m still chasing who has what book or DVD or camera
accessory - It can drive you nuts tracking these things! Create an Evernote file and
place a tag called #OnLoan - then jot down everything you loan to friends and the
date they borrowed it. Later on you can search back using that tag and find who
has it!

We would love you join the family!
8. #6Save important documents.
Keeping insurance membership numbers, tax PDF summaries or important
documents in email or paper can be risky. You may lose it, in a physical damage or
email hack. I recommend backing up your important documents to Evernote in a
folder. I use one called “memberships” and while I don’t save passwords I do save
important numbers. I can personally say I’ve search back for my Qantas frequent
flyer or insurance number many times! This tip is a lifesaver.
9. #7Keep receipts for tax.
Create a folder under your “finance” stack called “TAX” and insert the year after.
Now you can easily throw all your tax receipts from purchases directly into one
place. I find it easy to scan in items with my phone and save emails of donations.
The result is a stress-free and pre-organised tax week!
10. #8Measure things with annotations.
Ever been at the hardware store or Ikea and wondering if that shelf or carpet will
fit the living room? Get your mobile out and take a snapshot of a room. Next up hit
‘annotate image’ and draw using the arrows and text some markings across the
image of walls, floor width etc. Next up get a tape measure and measure up the
room. Fill in the details to your Evernote image. Now you have a full blueprint of
your room ready when you need it! This can be perfect for remembering details
when landscaping or renovating.
11. #9Remember where you were.
Ever forgot what the heck you were thinking but you remembered the place?
Well - Evernote remembers both and can help you tie the two together! Enable
geotagging in your settings and Evernote can bring up all your notes organised by
the exact location. Suddenly, you have access to those travel notes in London, or
the notes you took three weekends ago in Sydney.
12. #10Subscribe to newsletters.
If you want less clutter in your inbox use your private Evernote email to sign up to
newsletters. Then you can create a “newsletter” folder and automate them into
that catchment. Now your inbox is free for the important things! You can find your
personal evernote email in your account settings under preferences. Check out
my Evernote Ultimate facebook page for the link to the video tutorial on Youtube.
13. #11BONUS TIP: Create a packing list.
If you travel frequently or are traveling for a long-term trip you will want to make
sure everything is ready to go! Use the Evernote checklist feature to write down a
checklist and categorise it. I start with ‘essentials’ then have a separate space for
‘clothes’ and ’technology’ items. Use the Evernote reminder feature to remind you
to pick up items (such as buying a travel adaptor or handing in the VISA application
in time).
