Do you remember show and tell?
 We only have a short time so this isn’t
intended to be a hands-on session
where you follow along step-by -step
on your phone.
 The slides will be made available to
you. No need to copy everything down.
 My goal today is to share some tips, techniques
and tools that you can use with your Smartphone.
 I hope to give you at least one of these
moments.
 I can do that!
 Wait, really? My phone can do that?
 That is exactly what I need!
 Holy cow! I should do that!
 If you have a Smartphone, it is like you are walking
around with an itty bitty computer.
 Of course you can talk on the phone and send text
messages but you can also
 Connect to the Internet and that means most of the
collective knowledge currently available
 And you can use specialized “apps” that make it
easy to accomplish a huge variety of other kinds of
tasks (not to mention, entertainment).

Empowering you to use contemporary technology
It’s EASY when you know how!
Smartphones are not all alike; but
they are pretty similar…
 Newer models vs. older ones
 Some have more power or bells and
whistles
 iPhone vs Android and Windows or others
 Much of what I will show you will be
Android version
 Most things will apply to iPhone as well
although they are not fully interchangeable
Feedback I get all the time
 Anybody here have a phone that can do
lots of things, like get email, or calendar or
facebook, but you are not sure how to do
most of that?
 Anybody committed to their simple
phone…cannot imagine wanting to be
“tethered” to a Smartphone?
Goals
I’m going to introduce some of the ways I use
my phone to
Keep it (and my data) secure
Help me remember stuff
Stay on task
 Feel more productive with less anxiety and
stress.
Just like anything else in your life,
the key is moderation
 Why do I mention this? Because it’s a common concern that
the use of a smart phone will force you to be “on call” all the
time, that you will never have peace and quiet.
 Remember, you have control over the use of your phone. If you
are sitting with someone in a cafe, and the phone rings, you
can choose to answer it or not.
 You control the interruptions. What notifications you receive,
how you receive them and whether/when you choose to
respond to them. On your iPhone this is found in your settings.
On the Android, most of the settings are found at the app level.
Example
Gmail
settings
Security is #1 –Lock your screen
 Don’t leave your phone unlocked just because
it is an inconvenience to unlock it. If you are
logged into your email, facebook, twitter, your
calendar, you name it, you are putting yourself
at risk by not locking it.
 iPhones have a 4 digit pin number.
 Android phones have a choice of methods,
including a password or pin number, but I like
this one, a pattern.
Besides securing your
phone with a code or
password, you should
activate a method to help
you track down your phone,
or wipe its memory, if you
lose it, so that sensitive
information does not fall
into the wrong hands. You
don’t need a separate app.
Android device manager
and your iCloud can
manage this function.
Instead of re-using the same weak passwords over
and over again, LassPass lets you have strong
passwords, or at the very least, different passwords
for each place you login. And you just have to
remember one strong password for LastPass.
Keep your passwords secure
My

Screen
OurGroceries
Easy to learn
Easy to use
Shareable with others
Multiple lists
Not just for groceries
Use it for all kinds of
recurring checklists
Any kind of checklist works
well with this app.
Especially a recurring list
such as:
•Getting ready for a trip
•A presentation
•A client meeting
•Training a new employee
Moovit
If you take public
transportation, Moovit is
a great resource.
Notice that the bus stops
nearby have a star
instead of a bus icon.
That is because I have
made them “favorites.”
If you have ever gotten
turned around and wanted to
be sure you were going to
catch the bus going in the
right direction, knowing the
bus stop number can be a
big help.
This screen shows which
busses are currently running.
It lists bus lines that are my
“favorites” first.
There is a bus stop
number on the sign and
a bus stop number in the
app. Voila! No more
getting on the bus going
in the wrong direction!
If you touch your bus
stop, Moovit will
update the expected
arrival of your bus
based on the the GPS
on the bus. It is not
always accurate but
better than a kick in
the pants, right?
Once you touch
Start ride mode…
You will be asked to select
your destination stop. Then
Moovit will tell you how many
stops there are, show you
your progress on the map
and specify your estimated
arrival time.
It tells you when you are 2
stops away, when your stop
is next and when to get off
the bus.
Google Maps will
tell you where to
walk. It will talk to
you. It can show
you your position
so you can see if
you are walking in
the right direction.
Get Taxi
It tells you how long until
the taxi arrives, who is the
driver, with a photo (lets
you rate the ride
afterwards), shows you the
path the taxi is taking on
the map. Many excellent
and informative features.
And no additional charge to
call a taxi.
Get Taxi - ‫טקסי‬ ‫גט‬
They seem to have discovered the problem with
their translation & changed their name to English
If you drive a car, Pango is a way to pay for parking
with your phone.
I have no personal experience with this app, but as
soon as I get a car, I’m getting Pango!
Evernote
This is my favorite app.
Evernote helps me keep
my sanity because I can
file anything and
everything away in
Evernote and know that
I will be able to find it
when I need it.
You can file images,
audio, websites, articles,
scribbles.
You can give them
reminder dates, so it is a
GTD (get things done)
solution.
You can share notes you
make, collaborate.
You can write or
draw too.
(Just like you
would on a cocktail
napkin)
I use the label feature
extensively. Since I never know
how exactly I will be searching
for an item, or what aspect I
will remember, I include all
kinds of triggers.
For example, my notes when
preparing for this talk included
productivity, smartphone, talk,
ITA, Israeli Translators
Association, presentation, Feb
2015
A prime example of how I
use Evernote
Clock
Sometimes we need a
reminder that is truly invasive.
Not just a text message or
email notification. We need an
alarm so we don’t forget to do
something important at the
appropriate time.
What could be simpler than to
set an alarm on the phone.
Beware! The alarm will sound
even if the phone is set to
silent!
By the way, these are
screenshots from my
phone. You can take a
screenshot by holding
down the power button
and the home button at
the same time.
(whether on iPhone or
Android)
The home button is in the
middle on the bottom.
Hold your home button to see all
your open apps and navigate
between them or close them if you
desire.
On the iPhone, it is a double-click
on you home button to get the
open apps and you can swipe to
close them.

Empowering you to use contemporary technology
It’s EASY when you know how!
The camera can be very handy
Sometimes I want to make sure that I will find my
way, or be able to find an invitation or such and I
might lose the piece of paper, or I might not have
connectivity when I need it.
If I have a photo on my camera, I have a record that
I can use as a reference.
The camera on the phone
It’s not just for taking photos of people or
vacations. I take photos of all kinds of things.
Some examples…
1. A sign that I don’t have time to decipher
2. A store that I want to come back to and I
want to remember the surroundings
3. An item that I might want to buy later
4. An excerpt from a book I am reading
5. A label on a food item that I want to
investigate before I buy it
6. Something my husband or son might
want or be interested in seeing
7. An error message on my computer
8. A person I just met to add their photo
when I add them as a contact
9. A medical document that I have to turn in
10.A receipt that will fade over time
I might even take a picture of
a recipe on a slip of paper.
And annotate it with Skitch.
There are apps that let you edit
photos right on your phone.
Save them, crop them, apply
filters like this one of me.
In this case, I did this right in the
Gallery app that comes with the
Android phone.
You can also organize your
photos into folders.
And back them up to the Cloud
using Dropbox or OneDrive or
some other service.

Storage and back up in
the Cloud.
Also Google drive and
dropbox.
Great way to back up
your photos, share
large files
OneDrive
Possibly you have already
had someone share a
document or a picture with
you using Google Drive… It
allows you to view, possibly
edit documents and
spreadsheets and
presentations. Free. Even
read a Microsoft Word or
Excel document.
If you have gmail, you just
need to activate it.

then you are missing
out on an opportunity
to market your

SwiftKey
In addition to making typing
easier
Swype is very good at predicting
your words once it gets to know
you
And you can speak to it, and it
will transcribe your words.
I like SwiftKey, but I
had to consider
whether I wanted to
give the access I
needed to grant in
order to get the
benefits.
(that is the conundrum
with many apps.)

  • 4. Do you remember show and tell?  We only have a short time so this isn’t intended to be a hands-on session where you follow along step-by -step on your phone.  The slides will be made available to you. No need to copy everything down.
  • 5.  My goal today is to share some tips, techniques and tools that you can use with your Smartphone.  I hope to give you at least one of these moments.  I can do that!  Wait, really? My phone can do that?  That is exactly what I need!  Holy cow! I should do that!
  • 6.  If you have a Smartphone, it is like you are walking around with an itty bitty computer.  Of course you can talk on the phone and send text messages but you can also  Connect to the Internet and that means most of the collective knowledge currently available  And you can use specialized “apps” that make it easy to accomplish a huge variety of other kinds of tasks (not to mention, entertainment). Presented by Bryna Lee Jacobson, My Tech Tutor | mobile 050-7725767 Empowering you to use contemporary technology It’s EASY when you know how!
  • 7. Smartphones are not all alike; but they are pretty similar…  Newer models vs. older ones  Some have more power or bells and whistles  iPhone vs Android and Windows or others  Much of what I will show you will be Android version  Most things will apply to iPhone as well although they are not fully interchangeable
  • 8. Feedback I get all the time  Anybody here have a phone that can do lots of things, like get email, or calendar or facebook, but you are not sure how to do most of that?  Anybody committed to their simple phone…cannot imagine wanting to be “tethered” to a Smartphone?
  • 9. Goals I’m going to introduce some of the ways I use my phone to Keep it (and my data) secure Help me remember stuff Stay on task  Feel more productive with less anxiety and stress.
  • 10. Just like anything else in your life, the key is moderation  Why do I mention this? Because it’s a common concern that the use of a smart phone will force you to be “on call” all the time, that you will never have peace and quiet.  Remember, you have control over the use of your phone. If you are sitting with someone in a cafe, and the phone rings, you can choose to answer it or not.  You control the interruptions. What notifications you receive, how you receive them and whether/when you choose to respond to them. On your iPhone this is found in your settings. On the Android, most of the settings are found at the app level.
  • 12. Security is #1 –Lock your screen  Don’t leave your phone unlocked just because it is an inconvenience to unlock it. If you are logged into your email, facebook, twitter, your calendar, you name it, you are putting yourself at risk by not locking it.  iPhones have a 4 digit pin number.  Android phones have a choice of methods, including a password or pin number, but I like this one, a pattern.
  • 13.
  • 14. Besides securing your phone with a code or password, you should activate a method to help you track down your phone, or wipe its memory, if you lose it, so that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands. You don’t need a separate app. Android device manager and your iCloud can manage this function.
  • 15. Instead of re-using the same weak passwords over and over again, LassPass lets you have strong passwords, or at the very least, different passwords for each place you login. And you just have to remember one strong password for LastPass. Keep your passwords secure
  • 17. OurGroceries Easy to learn Easy to use Shareable with others Multiple lists Not just for groceries Use it for all kinds of recurring checklists
  • 18. Any kind of checklist works well with this app. Especially a recurring list such as: •Getting ready for a trip •A presentation •A client meeting •Training a new employee
  • 19. Moovit If you take public transportation, Moovit is a great resource. Notice that the bus stops nearby have a star instead of a bus icon. That is because I have made them “favorites.”
  • 20. If you have ever gotten turned around and wanted to be sure you were going to catch the bus going in the right direction, knowing the bus stop number can be a big help. This screen shows which busses are currently running. It lists bus lines that are my “favorites” first.
  • 21. There is a bus stop number on the sign and a bus stop number in the app. Voila! No more getting on the bus going in the wrong direction!
  • 22. If you touch your bus stop, Moovit will update the expected arrival of your bus based on the the GPS on the bus. It is not always accurate but better than a kick in the pants, right? Once you touch Start ride mode…
  • 23. You will be asked to select your destination stop. Then Moovit will tell you how many stops there are, show you your progress on the map and specify your estimated arrival time. It tells you when you are 2 stops away, when your stop is next and when to get off the bus.
  • 24. Google Maps will tell you where to walk. It will talk to you. It can show you your position so you can see if you are walking in the right direction.
  • 25. Get Taxi It tells you how long until the taxi arrives, who is the driver, with a photo (lets you rate the ride afterwards), shows you the path the taxi is taking on the map. Many excellent and informative features. And no additional charge to call a taxi.
  • 26. Get Taxi - ‫טקסי‬ ‫גט‬ They seem to have discovered the problem with their translation & changed their name to English
  • 27. If you drive a car, Pango is a way to pay for parking with your phone. I have no personal experience with this app, but as soon as I get a car, I’m getting Pango!
  • 28. Evernote This is my favorite app. Evernote helps me keep my sanity because I can file anything and everything away in Evernote and know that I will be able to find it when I need it.
  • 29. You can file images, audio, websites, articles, scribbles. You can give them reminder dates, so it is a GTD (get things done) solution. You can share notes you make, collaborate.
  • 30. You can write or draw too. (Just like you would on a cocktail napkin)
  • 31. I use the label feature extensively. Since I never know how exactly I will be searching for an item, or what aspect I will remember, I include all kinds of triggers. For example, my notes when preparing for this talk included productivity, smartphone, talk, ITA, Israeli Translators Association, presentation, Feb 2015 A prime example of how I use Evernote
  • 32. Clock Sometimes we need a reminder that is truly invasive. Not just a text message or email notification. We need an alarm so we don’t forget to do something important at the appropriate time. What could be simpler than to set an alarm on the phone. Beware! The alarm will sound even if the phone is set to silent!
  • 33. By the way, these are screenshots from my phone. You can take a screenshot by holding down the power button and the home button at the same time. (whether on iPhone or Android) The home button is in the middle on the bottom.
  • 34. Hold your home button to see all your open apps and navigate between them or close them if you desire. On the iPhone, it is a double-click on you home button to get the open apps and you can swipe to close them.
  • 35. Presented by Bryna Lee Jacobson, My Tech Tutor | mobile 050-7725767 Empowering you to use contemporary technology It’s EASY when you know how! The camera can be very handy Sometimes I want to make sure that I will find my way, or be able to find an invitation or such and I might lose the piece of paper, or I might not have connectivity when I need it. If I have a photo on my camera, I have a record that I can use as a reference.
  • 36. The camera on the phone It’s not just for taking photos of people or vacations. I take photos of all kinds of things. Some examples… 1. A sign that I don’t have time to decipher 2. A store that I want to come back to and I want to remember the surroundings 3. An item that I might want to buy later 4. An excerpt from a book I am reading
  • 37. 5. A label on a food item that I want to investigate before I buy it 6. Something my husband or son might want or be interested in seeing 7. An error message on my computer 8. A person I just met to add their photo when I add them as a contact 9. A medical document that I have to turn in 10.A receipt that will fade over time
  • 38. I might even take a picture of a recipe on a slip of paper. And annotate it with Skitch.
  • 39. There are apps that let you edit photos right on your phone. Save them, crop them, apply filters like this one of me. In this case, I did this right in the Gallery app that comes with the Android phone. You can also organize your photos into folders. And back them up to the Cloud using Dropbox or OneDrive or some other service. Presented by Bryna Lee Jacobson, My Tech Tutor | mobile 050-7725767 Empowering you to use contemporary technology It’s EASY when you know how!
  • 40. Storage and back up in the Cloud. Also Google drive and dropbox. Great way to back up your photos, share large files OneDrive
  • 41. Possibly you have already had someone share a document or a picture with you using Google Drive… It allows you to view, possibly edit documents and spreadsheets and presentations. Free. Even read a Microsoft Word or Excel document. If you have gmail, you just need to activate it. Google Drive

  • 53. In addition to making typing easier Swype is very good at predicting your words once it gets to know you And you can speak to it, and it will transcribe your words.
  • 54. I like SwiftKey, but I had to consider whether I wanted to give the access I needed to grant in order to get the benefits. (that is the conundrum with many apps.)

Editor's Notes

  1. Very handy at night , when it is raining and the bus windows are all steamed up and in unfamiliar places. Especially if the display on the bus indicating bus stops is not working.
