For all the talk of creativity and personalization, many schools focus almost entirely on standardized assessment practices. In this session, we focus on ten alternative assessments that you can use to tap into critical thinking and creativity.

The affective domain refers to the tracking of growth in feelings or emotional areas throughout the learning experience. To be most effective, learning objectives labeled using this domain need a very clear instructional intention for growth in this area specified in the learning objective.

Digital Tools for Language AcquisitionJohn Spencer
A digital divide exists between native speakers and ELL students. Few of them experience the tech-rich, creative experiences of other students. We can do better! By providing the right language scaffolding, ELL students can experience the same creative, inquiry-based experiences that all students deserve!

Alternative Assessment Tools for Students with Complex DisabilitiesLynn Marentette
This is a presentation I did for my colleagues about assessment and multiple special needs. Since then, there are even more ways to approach assessment of students with multiple and complex needs. I'll be preparing an update in the future!
A look at the benefits of portfolios and other forms of assessment. This presentation was given in the Pedagogy Circle on Nov 11 and Nov 12, by Joanne Chesley, Ed.D.
We need a bigger definition of creativity in education. It goes beyond simply creating something new. It also means tweaking things, fixing things, mixing them up, etc. So here are the types of creative teachers.
Despite the myth of "digital natives," most of my students have very little experience using technology as anything more than a consumer device. It doesn't have to be this way. By using the design thinking cycle, teachers can foster creative thinking in every content area.
With the explosion of the maker movement, schools are beginning to embrace creativity. However, what does this mean for assessment? Should we assess the creative process? Should we assess the finished product? Does assessing creativity actually make kids more risk-averse? In this workshop we explore what it means to assess both the creative process and the creative product without leading to risk aversion.
Often schools push technology integration (in this case digital technology) into classrooms without thinking about each teacher's personal journey. We forget that digital tools are also digital spaces and that navigating your way around them takes time. This sessions focusses on what that looks like and what it means to help guide teachers through the phases. If you're interested in having me lead a session, workshop or keynote on this topic, please contact me at john@educationrethink.com.
When I first began teaching reading, I stuck to a rigid curriculum guide. I asked the questions. I required students to use the strategies that I modeled for them. It was a rigid route where I was the conductor. Eventually, I took my students off-road and allowed them to explore the terrain on their own. Visual Writing Ideas: Shifting from Prompts to IdeasJohn Spencer
The key difference from a writing prompt and a writing idea is that prompts require writing and ideas inspire writing. Here's an exploration of what makes visual writing ideas and what process we can use to make them. If you're interested in having me speak on this topic, please email me at john@educationrethink.com.
Intrinsically Motivating Student Achievement by Alternative Assessmentbsurkan
Innovative educational authors and thinkers often identify the tradition of conventional testing as a core obstacle in overhauling education. While “teaching to the test” draws near universal ire, most of us continue the old routine: lesson -> homework practice -> quiz -> test -> next unit -> lesson -> practice, etc. Students are warned to pay attention and take quality notes in order to perform well on the omnipresent test. Wouldn’t it be great if students enjoyed coming to class because they embraced ownership of their own learning and found the material to be both relevant and engaging?
Over the years, I have found ways of overhauling the structure of my classroom to transfer the ownership of the learning to the students via a combination of mutual respect and an alternative grading strategy. My methods include rich participation metrics, diverse projects and effective editing. Innovative assessments are not only possible within the constraints of conventional external grades, but students and parents embrace them. Diverse classrooms of students at different skill levels can also be readily accommodated. In addition to outlining methodologies, ready-to-use assessment tools will be provided for teachers to use directly or adapt to their needs.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
