Ukrainian artistic traditions developed over centuries and include various styles such as icon-painting, portrait painting, impressionism, avant-garde, constructivism, futurism, abstraction, folk, primitive, and classicism. Icon-painting originated in the 10th century after Kyivan Rus was baptized, while portrait painting emerged during the Renaissance in the 16th century. Impressionism grew popular in the late 19th century along with avant-garde styles in the 20th century like constructivism and futurism. Ukrainian art continues to develop while retaining national themes in paintings focused on history, landscapes, and formal styles.
