Eugene de Blaas was an Austrian painter born in 1843 in Albano, Italy to Austrian parents. He came from an artistic family, with his father Karl being a notable portrait painter of Roman society. Karl eventually took positions teaching at art academies in Vienna and Venice. Eugene de Blaas established himself as a leading painter of genre scenes from Venice, depicting the lives of Venetian fishermen, gondoliers, and beauties, catering to affluent visitors to Venice who wanted depictions of daily life in the city.
