When we don’t pay attention to race in our policymaking and in our grant funding, we continue to see disparities. The speakers gave examples of how racial and equitable US policies are important for all Americans and then gave some tools funders could use to identify structural problems. Representatives of The Hyams Foundation then shared key points in their journey in applying a structural race analysis to a key programmatic area, as an initial step to infusing racial justice throughout the Foundation's work. The webinar concluded with a Q&A with the participants.
Leading Social Change

Sevak - Social Volunteering Reimagined
SEVAK aims to engage more young people in community-based volunteerism. Current efforts to mobilize individuals place the burden of discovery on volunteers and are biased towards those who are already civically engaged. SEVAK adopts a proactive approach driven by a ‘social recruitment’ philosophy. We complement organization-created requests with personalized appeals from registered volunteers, and use intelligent algorithms combining task-compatibility with social affinity to recommend relevant opportunities. This drives conversion of un-engaged youth to civic causes and rewards existing volunteers by giving them additional ways to make and measure their impact. The SEVAK solution consists of a web-based engine with mobile/web applications for volunteer use.

Social loafing (1979)
Social loafing refers to reduced individual effort when working in a group compared to working alone. In a classic rope pulling study, individual performance decreased as group size increased, demonstrating the Ringlemann Effect. There are several theories for why social loafing occurs, including that working in a group diffuses social influence, reduces arousal for simple tasks, and makes individual efforts feel dispensable to the group product. Evaluation of individual contributions and establishing performance standards can help reduce social loafing.

After so much debate and so many
policies, why is our education system
still failing so many of our children?
What are we either missing or
pretending not to know?
Reforms only work when people
who implement them are on board,
engaged, and valued. What gets talked
about from the boardroom to the
classroom, how it gets talked about, and
who is invited to join the conversation
determines what will happen or won’t.
Are the driving conversations
dividing or connecting stakeholders?
Are they catalysts for change and
accountability, or are they further
entrenching people in fear and blame?
Is mandating accountability preventing
us from hearing and seeing the
competing truths that exist about our
students, classrooms, and schools?
Amid the spinning wheels of
education reform, an essential
component seems to be missing:
conversations that speak directly to the
heart of the issue, engage people’s
curiosity to uncover the truth, galvanize
people, and create collective
responsibility.
Leadership that attempts to create
accountability with top-down
mandates, rather than by engaging and
connecting people, leads to or
exacerbates a culture of blame and
excuses. Mandating accountability,
while it may sound effective, simply
doesn’t work. Why? Because most often
in practice this approach is fueled by
the same thing victimhood is fueled by
— blame. And as long as that’s the case,
there’s no time, energy, or vision left to
create real solutions.
A NeW VIeW OF AccOuNTABILITY
The long-term benefits of
accountability have enormous
implications for the quality of our lives
and of our education system. There is a
direct correlation between any
organization’s health and the degree of
accountability displayed by its
employees, top to bottom.
Accountability is an attitude, a
personal, private, and nonnegotiable
choice about how to live one’s life. It’s a
desire to take responsibility for results,
and for that reason, it cannot be
mandated. It requires a personal bias
toward solutions, toward action.
Rather than hold people
accountable, hold them
“able.” Rather than equate
the word accountability
with culpability, begin with
yourself and model the kind
of accountability that is
empowering. Accountability
has to come from within.
Model it and show people how
accountability benefits them. When it’s
clear how accountability benefits
someone, accountability becomes an
internal drive.
While we don’t always have a choice
about the situation in which we find
ourselves, we do have a choice about
how we view or judge it. Consider
shifting your perspective from ‘Since
this is a tough situation, I can’t do it,
I’m not willing to muster the courage,
will, skill, energy, focus, needed to do
or say what needs doing,’ to taking the
stance that ...

Working Together 59
What Is Working Together?
Lesson number one about working together: never assume that a
large group gathered in one place means that the individuals have
worked together, will work together, or even might work together
for any reason. Breakfast meetings with an outside visitor can
usually draw a crowd, but assume nothing. Words such as collabora-
tion and partnership are cast about regularly, but they mean more
than a casual meeting or conversation. Working together is the
ability of a group of people to develop a relationship of trust that
will allow different perspectives to be heard and discussed with
ultimate agreement to take action on the issue. That’s more than
a one-time gathering or an e-mail trail; it is a consistent, sustained
relationship over time. Joining together requires trust and rela-
tionships as well as process and information. It is never an abstrac-
tion. What might work or could work or should work only works
when people actually do something together.
The spectrum of working together usually includes some
version of cooperation, partnerships, coalition building, comprehensive
community initiatives, and collaboration. The most interesting new
work has a larger scope and more and varied stakeholders result-
ing in better outcomes.
Cooperation is an inherent quality and characteristic that is
common to all four of these organizing groups. It can be its own
kind of relationship, but often that includes simply sharing infor-
mation, jointly sponsoring events, or not blocking something.
Partnerships are quite common community structures formed
between individuals, organizations, government agencies, and
businesses that want to combine forces for results that match their
own organization’s best interests. In a survey done in 2001, In It
for the Long Haul: Community Partnerships Making a Difference by the
Pew Partnership for Civic Change (2001), with business, govern-
ment, and nonprofit leaders in the two hundred largest cities,
respondents cited a number of payoffs for partnerships beyond
just the organizations involved or the specific issue addressed by
the partnership:
1. Community partnerships raise visibility on local issues: it’s
hard for communities to solve problems they don’t know
about.

EOA2016: LiveHealthy2020 a Foundation for Transformation
LiveHealthy2020 (LH2020) is a collective impact initiative in Snohomish County, Washington to improve community health. In 2016, LH2020 directors provided an update on year 1 results and unveiled new online tools. They discussed principles of equity, empathy, resilience and empowerment in LH2020's work. As of July 2016, LH2020 had 128 signatories implementing over 180 programs across 222 locations, collectively reaching over 1.2 million people. New online tools like a partner portal and community maps were demonstrated to connect partners, track goals and share resources.

Recomendações da OMS sobre cuidados maternos e neonatais para uma experiência pós-natal positiva.
Em consonância com os ODS – Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e a Estratégia Global para a Saúde das Mulheres, Crianças e Adolescentes, e aplicando uma abordagem baseada nos direitos humanos, os esforços de cuidados pós-natais devem expandir-se para além da cobertura e da simples sobrevivência, de modo a incluir cuidados de qualidade.
Estas diretrizes visam melhorar a qualidade dos cuidados pós-natais essenciais e de rotina prestados às mulheres e aos recém-nascidos, com o objetivo final de melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar materno e neonatal.
Uma “experiência pós-natal positiva” é um resultado importante para todas as mulheres que dão à luz e para os seus recém-nascidos, estabelecendo as bases para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar a curto e longo prazo. Uma experiência pós-natal positiva é definida como aquela em que as mulheres, pessoas que gestam, os recém-nascidos, os casais, os pais, os cuidadores e as famílias recebem informação consistente, garantia e apoio de profissionais de saúde motivados; e onde um sistema de saúde flexível e com recursos reconheça as necessidades das mulheres e dos bebês e respeite o seu contexto cultural.
Estas diretrizes consolidadas apresentam algumas recomendações novas e já bem fundamentadas sobre cuidados pós-natais de rotina para mulheres e neonatos que recebem cuidados no pós-parto em unidades de saúde ou na comunidade, independentemente dos recursos disponíveis.
É fornecido um conjunto abrangente de recomendações para cuidados durante o período puerperal, com ênfase nos cuidados essenciais que todas as mulheres e recém-nascidos devem receber, e com a devida atenção à qualidade dos cuidados; isto é, a entrega e a experiência do cuidado recebido. Estas diretrizes atualizam e ampliam as recomendações da OMS de 2014 sobre cuidados pós-natais da mãe e do recém-nascido e complementam as atuais diretrizes da OMS sobre a gestão de complicações pós-natais.
O estabelecimento da amamentação e o manejo das principais intercorrências é contemplada.
