Primer
 Relationships are a basic human need
 Relationships strengthen communities because:
 They help prevent us from harming one another in the
first place
 When harm does happen (because it will – we’re human)
we are able to respond to that harm in a way that doesn’t
cause the community to fall apart and hopefully actually
repairs the harm done
 Restorative Practices is an emerging field in social
science that studies “how to strengthen relationships
between individuals as well as social connections
within communities.” - IIRP

in their behavior when those in positions of authority
do things with them, rather than to them or for

Edge of Amazing: Fast Track Session - Restorative Practices

  • 1. Becoming Restorative A Living Case Study of Casino Road
  • 2. ConnectCasino Road  Collaborative project dedicated to supporting Casino Road families  Breaking down barriers between siloed agencies and sectors to align our work to common goals  Jointly funded through the Whitehorse Foundation and United Way of Snohomish County  Started Spring of 2017  Current Project: Bringing a “Community Hub” to Casino Road
  • 3. Restorative Practices:A Primer  Relationships are a basic human need  Relationships strengthen communities because:  They help prevent us from harming one another in the first place  When harm does happen (because it will – we’re human) we are able to respond to that harm in a way that doesn’t cause the community to fall apart and hopefully actually repairs the harm done  Restorative Practices is an emerging field in social science that studies “how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.” - IIRP
  • 4. Doing“With”  “human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them.” - IIRP  Doing “to”  Authoritarian  Doing “for”  Enabler  Doing “with”  High support, but high accountability
  • 5. UsingAffective Statements  Using “I feel statements”  Promotes authenticity and vulnerability  Shows how you experienced the impact of someone’s actions
  • 6. FairProcess  Was the process for making a decisions inclusive?  Was the process agreed upon and transparent?  Outcome is acceptable even if it doesn’t work in our favor because the process was fair
  • 10. Lesson1 Restorative Practices is not a program you can implement. Rather, it is a way of being that requires culture change, shifts in mental mindsets, and paradigm shifts.
  • 11. Lesson2 Implicit bias and power differentials are important.
  • 12. Lesson3 Find a community Restorative champion.
  • 13. Lesson4 Invest in building an internal Restorative champion.  Who are those people in your organization that can really internalize Restorative Practices and champion the effort for others?
  • 14. Lesson5 Make it formal.
  • 15. Lesson6 Real resources follow real priorities.
