King David’s Hokey Pokey
1. King David’s Hokey
Pokey
I. A small step for Israel, a giant leap for David…
2Sam 2:3-4
3 And his men that were with him did David bring up,
every man with his household: and they dwelt in the
cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed
David king over the house of Judah. And they told
David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that
buried Saul.
King of one tribe is not bad, but it’s still not the fulfilment of the
prophecy to rule the nation. (a small step for Israel but a big
step from running for your life).
II. Pride is pressed and must be put down
2Sam 4:9-10
9 And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the
sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As
the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all
adversity,
2. 10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead,
thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of
him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would
have given him a reward for his tidings:
Right from the start the king of Pride has tried to lay a trap for
David. He put aside pride.
III. Good work is rewarded
2Sam 5:3
3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron;
and king David made a league with them in Hebron
before the LORD: and they anointed David king over
Israel.
Finally, his humility and patience is rewarded; he is now king of
all Israel.
IV. Too busy to notice accolades
2Sam 5:7
7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the
same is the city of David.
He’s king but it’s not all palaces and parades; work is required.
3. No comfort for the enemies of God; no exceptions
no excuses
2Sam 5:8
8 And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up
to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame
and the blind, that are hated of David's soul, he
shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The
blind and the lame shall not come into the house.
2Sam 5:10
10 And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God
of hosts was with him.
Not a simple statement “the LORD God was with him” he was a
warring king so the “Man of war” was with him- the LORD God
of hosts.
V. Good work rewarded
2Sam 5:11
11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and
cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built
David an house.
God is a good employer. David was working hard and God was
paying over time.
4. VI. Peter syndrome, David noticed he was blessed
2Sam 5:12-13
12 And David perceived that the LORD had established
him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom
for his people Israel's sake.
13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of
Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there
were yet sons and daughters born to David.
Saul, David, Nebuchadnezzar, Peter and every Christian has to
learn this lesson.
God building something great with a simple instrument doesn’t
make the instrument any greater than it was before God picked
it up.
David’s “me day” comes to a screeching halt when the
VII. Philistines declare war.
2Sam 5:17-21
17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed
David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek
David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the
valley of Rephaim.
5. 19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up
to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand?
And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless
deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
20 And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them
there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine
enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he
called the name of that place Baalperazim.
21 And there they left their images, and David and his men
burned them.
A new leather baseball glove may look and smell great, but its
purpose is to be wore out.
VIII. David … went down
2Sam 5:17
17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed
David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek
David; and David heard of it, and went down…
Ps 18:27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but
wilt bring down high looks.
Prov 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of
wisdom; and before honour is humility.
6. Luke 14:11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
IX. David visits God’s art gallery
2Sam 5:17
17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed
David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek
David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
No doubt Davidreflects on the rollercoaster ride he’s been on.
In our passage we see where he was derailed.

7. X. The Hold
2Sam 23:13-14
13 And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to
David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and
the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of
Rephaim.
14 And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the
Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
1Chr 11:15-18 15 Now three of the thirty captains went
down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and
the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of
Rephaim.
16 And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines'
garrison was then at Bethlehem.
17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give
me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is
at the gate!
18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines,
and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by
the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David
would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
Self-admiration and congratulation will leave you parched, from
singing your own praises. Fortunately, David had some good
8. men around him who would hazard their lives to quench his
thirst.
Mic 1:15 Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O
inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam
the glory of Israel.
2Sam 5:12
12 And David perceived that the LORD had established
him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his
kingdom for his people Israel's sake.
David the first king from the line of Judahmust remember the
father of his tribe, Juda(Gen 38). His trouble started with a
woman who was an Adullamitenamed Hirah.
David’strain began its derail when king Hiram gave him gifts.
Adullamis supposed to be the place of the “glory of Israel”
…and that’s not a man.
David got back to hidingin the glory of God… down to the cave
of Adullam.
It wasn’t so long-ago David was in trouble with the Philistines.
1Sam 21:10-15
9. 10 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul,
and went to Achish the king of Gath.
11 And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this
David the king of the land? did they not sing one to
another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his
thousands, and David his ten thousands?
12 And David laid up these words in his heart, and was
sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.
13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and
feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on
the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his
beard.
14 Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man
is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
15 Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this
fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this
fellow come into my house?
1Sam 22:1-2
1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the
cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's
house heard it, they went down thither to him.
2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that
was in debt, and every one that was discontented,
gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain
10. over them: and there were with him about four hundred
men.
Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,
and he shall lift you up.
1Pet 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the
mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due
time:
Rom 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in
due time Christ died for the ungodly.
1Thess 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
Rom 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and
was raised again for our justification.
Matt 21:42-44
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the
scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the
same is become the head of the corner: this is the
Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God
shall be taken from you, and given to a nation
bringing forth the fruits thereof.
11. 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be
broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind
him to powder.
