1P9: Thursday 11th November, 2010
Matter and Particles: Chemical Changes
Homework
• Homework set on Thursday 4th was due on
Monday 8th November…
– Some were great and MERITS were awarded 
– Some were not as great – more effort required please!
– Some were not handed in – very disappointing 
• If this happens again de-merits will be given out
• New Homework: due in on Tuesday 17th
November – write this down in your notebooks!!!
– Homework 3. Q3
– Homework 4. Q1, 2, 3.
Let’s review our learning:
hands up please!
• What is a chemical reaction?
• Name some everyday chemical reactions
• Complete the following word equation:
• Magnesium + Oxygen 
• What did Magnesium look like before it was
burned?
• What did it look like after it was burned?
• Was this a mixture or a compound?
• Can we change the Magnesium back to a shiny
metal again?
Write up your last Experiment!
– Draw a labelled diagram of the experiment
– What apparatus did you use?
– Describe how you burned the Magnesium
– Note down all your observations:
– What did Magnesium look like before it was
burned?
– What did it look like after?
More experiments!
• Today we will be doing 2 more experiments
– A: Adding Marble chips into Hydrochloric Acid
– B: Mixing two solutions together
– You will have about 10 minutes to do each experiment
• For both experiments you will need to:
– draw a labelled diagram
– explain how you did the experiment
– carefully observe and note down what happens
Experiment A: marble chips and acid
• Add some Hydrochloric acid into a beaker
• Take the temperature of the acid using the
thermometer
– Note this result down
• Add in some marble chips
– Note down what happens in your notebooks
• Measure the temperature again
– Note this result down
Experiment B: Mixing solutions
• Add 2cm depth of solution A into one test tube
– What does this solution look like? Note it down
• Add 2cm depth of solution B into another test tube
– What does this solution look like? Note it down
• Pour the contents of one test tube into another
– What does this mixture look like? Note it down
– Is there anything else there now that wasn’t before?
Let’s review our results:
hands up please!
• What happened to the marble chips?
• Was there a temperature change?
• What did the solutions look like before they
were mixed together?
• What did the solutions look like after they
were mixed?
Conclusions
• Looking back at the experiments we have done
we can say that:
Chemical reactions have the following things in
common:
– They produce new substances
– They involve a change in temperature
– They involve a change in appearance
What’s next?
• Tuesday 17th November
– Hand in your homework for me to check!
– We will be revising Matter and Particles topic for a
TEST on THURSDAY 18th November
• Using your traffic light colours – please let me
know if you have understood chemical
reactions today!
