The student aims to incorporate elements of mystery, tension-building, and character-focused storytelling from these directors into their trailer. Cinematic photography will also serve as a visual influence.
Jack Roberts has created several mood boards to inspire his film trailer project. The mood boards include images from films like Get Out that showcase close-ups, color palettes, and visual effects. They also include posters that are simplistic in design yet convey the film's idea. Roberts' key influences are directors like Christopher Nolan for their high concept films, and Alfred Hitchcock for building tension. Cinematic photography styles will also influence Roberts' shots and color palette to achieve a dramatic and mysterious look and feel.
This document is a self-evaluation by Charlotte Bowerman of the production elements for her horror teaser trailer. She analyzes the locations, lighting, cinematography, props, costumes, shots, script, characters, fonts and poster design compared to the horror film "The Conjuring" to ensure she is using appropriate horror genre conventions. Bowerman identifies areas where her initial ideas did not fully match conventions seen in "The Conjuring" and other horror films, such as using more dramatic lighting, focusing costumes on characterizing vulnerability, and using bolder white fonts on a dark background for the teaser poster.
The document summarizes a student's plans for a short horror film project in the format of a YouTube vlog. The student will tell the story of a YouTuber vlogging in York who encounters mysterious events. Key elements include: filming in the vlog style to convey raw emotion; using lighting and color grading to start lighter and get darker/scarier; including ghostly figures subtly in the background; and ending on a cliffhanger with a ghostly figure partially shown. Films like Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project inspired the realistic style.
The research showed that the target audience for a thriller film trailer would be older males aged 55+, as they most interested in both thriller and action genres. Primary research through surveys and interviews supported that this demographic enjoys films with suspenseful build up, intense music, and quick cuts during climactic moments. The subject research on real stalkers provided insights into behaviors and mannerisms that could help develop a compelling villain character.
The document discusses the process of creating a poster for a horror film. It describes selecting two photographs that convey the mood and themes of the film. The poster designer edited the images in Photoshop, including overlaying an image of the alter-ego character over the villain character to show their connection. Text was added with keywords related to the film's themes of split personality, danger, and psycho. Overall the poster is meant to intrigue viewers and draw them in to learn more about the mysterious film.
- The student evaluated their research, planning, time management, technical qualities, aesthetic qualities, and audience appeal for their horror film trailer and poster project.
- For their research, they looked at fonts, cinematography, and tone of existing horror films to inform their own work. For planning, they storyboarded scenes and selected colors and fonts.
- They felt they managed their time well but could have added more scenes or effects with more time. Technically, they took inspiration from films like The Conjuring and Lights Out.
- Aesthetically, they were pleased with the black and white style but felt dialogue could be improved. For audience appeal, they aimed to attract fans of supernatural horror
Samuel Schoettner plans to create a trailer for a horror film about a plague doctor who tortures people for revenge. He wants the trailer to sync graphic violence with upbeat music to create an intense and psychotic tone. Samuel will make a costume and polished silver axe prop and film at appropriate locations using fake blood. He aims to achieve realism and authenticity through costume, makeup, and attention to detail. Posters will feature the protagonist or victims and be appropriately graphic for public spaces. Samuel is excited for creative freedom on this project.
This document outlines Millie Smith's planning for a film poster and trailer promoting her horror film "Nemesis." She proposes two color schemes - cold blues for a sinister atmosphere, and warmer tones for contrast. For the poster, she wants imagery of a character looking out a window with the two schemes clashing. The trailer will start warm and transition cold, and include "found footage" elements like night vision and security camera angles. She storyboards scenes, maps camera placements, and lists sound effects to replicate the security footage style for an immersive promotional experience within her restrictions.
This document provides an analysis of the key influencers and mood boards that will inspire the creator's film trailer project. The mood boards include screenshots from films like Shutter Island and Sixth Sense that showcase tight shots of actors to reveal facial expressions. They also include imagery around serial killers to inspire a film about the topic. The analyses indicate influences on lighting, color palettes, and shot composition from the mood boards. Key influences discussed are the complex narratives and ambiguous endings of Christopher Nolan films, the sense of alien worlds from E.T. and unique settings from Saving Private Ryan. The paranoia and deception in The Departed and Shutter Island are also noted as influences.
The document summarizes and reviews several horror movie trailers, including Resident Evil: Retribution, Wolf Creek, and Inside. It analyzes aspects like editing, sound effects, use of dialogue, storyline clarity, and how much character information is provided. Fertile Ground is identified as the best trailer for showcasing storyline, characters, and producers. Elements from different trailers that the author wants to incorporate into their own horror trailer are discussed.
The document discusses how the author's media products for their film "Flashbacks" use and challenge conventions of real media products in the film noir/neo-noir genres. Specifically, the author researched film trailers, posters, and magazines to understand typical conventions and then sought to both follow and subvert conventions in their own products. For example, the film trailer features fragmented narrative and mysterious elements typical of trailers but leaves viewers with many unanswered questions. The film poster features the main characters and stylistic elements of noir but avoids some conventions like direct eye contact. The magazine cover is inspired by real examples but uses a simpler design with manipulated background images. Throughout, the author considers how to maintain a consistent visual
The document analyzes the ways the media product uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real media.
The trailer conforms to zombie horror conventions like a dark tone, props/costumes, and tension building music. However, it challenges conventions by having a female protagonist who is strong rather than a damsel, and shows individual character stories intersecting instead of forming a group.
The poster conforms to conventions like a bold title and credits but challenges conventions by using CCTV footage as the main image rather than characters.
The magazine cover is inspired by real covers but challenges conventions by using four colors instead of three and images from the trailer rather than standalone shots. It develops conventions by adding extra information banners and
The document provides a planning outline for a short film exploring themes of homosexuality. It will tell the story of two boys - Harry, a popular kid who enjoys sports, and George, a loner who is struggling with mental health and has come out as gay. They become unlikely friends while waiting for the bus but Harry does not want his reputation affected. Their relationship develops feelings that confuse and scare Harry due to his homophobic father and friends. The document includes character descriptions, a brief plan with scene summaries, a script, shot list, storyboards, and location selections for filming.
- The student has been working on improving documents for their filmmaking project during time off from college due to Covid-19, including improving their proposal and planning documents.
- They are trying to access files from their college computer that contain important project work like their film script. Not having these files is a challenge to completing their planning.
- Limited equipment and software at home due to the pandemic restricts the student's ability to do practical filmmaking work, but they are considering alternative tasks like exploring shot ideas on their phone.
The document discusses potential problems that may occur during the filmmaking process and solutions to address those problems. Some of the key problems mentioned include equipment malfunctions, unreliable actors, unpredictable weather, and locations becoming unavailable. The author proposes solutions such as thoroughly testing equipment beforehand, having backup actors and locations, checking weather reports, and over-planning shoots to allow for flexibility. Addressing potential issues proactively is presented as important for avoiding disruptions and ensuring high quality finished work.
Louis Biddles proposes a short film project exploring homosexuality and the struggles of coming out. The film will follow two boys - a loner struggling with mental health and a popular boy with a homophobic father - who become friends and accidentally fall in love without knowing the other feels the same. Louis will research teen dramas and portrayals of coming out to develop believable characters. He outlines a 14-week production schedule including research, planning, filming, editing, and evaluation. The film will be screened for an audience, with the goal of showing it to an LGBT group given the topic's relevance.
The document discusses several potential problems that could arise during the filmmaking process and proposes solutions to address them. These precautions are presented as ways to avoid disruptions to the production timeline and ensure the highest quality final product.
The document summarizes the student's work over 5 weeks on their filmmaking project (FMP). In Week 1, they created inspiration and proposal documents, researching directors and themes. In Week 2, they began a research document on existing films and audience research. In Week 3, they conducted primary research through surveys and interviews. In Week 4, they created a problem-solving document identifying potential issues. In Week 5, they tested solutions through practical experiments on color, music, and camera angles. The student reflected on strengths and areas for improvement each week.
For week 5 of his filmmaking project, the student:
1. Completed problem solving experiments testing color tones, music mood, and camera angles to convey themes.
2. Finished his problem solving mind map and notes documenting potential issues and solutions.
3. Tested contrasting color tones to match different themes and changing mood with music, crucial elements for his film.
The document describes a short film project about two high school boys dealing with their sexuality and struggling to come out. One boy is openly gay but bullied, while the other is popular but questioning his sexuality secretly. They become friends but struggle with developing romantic feelings, knowing the popular boy's reputation and social circle would disapprove. The document examines some existing films dealing with similar themes, including their concepts, aesthetics, music, and techniques that could influence the project. Love, Simon effectively portrays coming out struggles through realistic acting. The Perks of Being a Wallflower includes an authentic aesthetic and relatable portrayal of a secret gay relationship that could provide ideas.
The document outlines a film project about a child hiding their sexuality. The creator wants to convey emotion through the drama genre and explore dark themes. They feel it will allow them to relate to the audience and achieve the purpose of film to make people feel something. The project will be personally important as it relates to people the creator knows who are going through similar issues. Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese are influences for their grounded, authentic style and dramatic scenes. The creator wants the audience to feel emotional, especially for the sad ending, to know the film succeeded. They will employ a dark tone through themes of coming out as homosexual and following the main character closely. The style was chosen because the creator enjoys exploring dark, controversial
The document discusses plans for a short film about two high school boys - one who is openly gay and struggles with bullying and mental health issues, and one who is popular but comes from a homophobic family and hides his sexuality. As the boys become friends, they start to develop feelings for each other but struggle with how to navigate their relationship given their different social situations and pressures around sexuality. The document provides an overview of the concept and themes that will be explored in the film.

Peer assessments praised the transitions sticking to the Batman theme and music complementing visuals, while suggesting improvements to audio, green screen quality, title cards, and pacing of the interview.
The document provides an evaluation of a web series project. It summarizes that the filming in the studio turned out well due to proper lighting and setup. Effective features included Batman transitions created from scratch using Premier Pro effects. The music choices conveyed the Batman theme well. Improvements could be made to the interview, such as having the interviewee read questions aloud. Title cards and green screen shots could also be enhanced. Overall the project went well but some aspects like music timing and green screen shots could be improved upon for an even more professional product.
The document discusses plans for a Batman-themed web series episode. The creator decided on a Batman topic after reviewing different mind map ideas. They will focus on how Tim Burton changed the Batman universe from the campy 1960s TV show to the darker 1989 film. Graphics and music will be used to transition between scenes and set the tone. An interview with a passionate Batman fan is also planned. The episode structure will introduce the presenter and include images, videos, and graphics to supplement their narration of Batman's history and Burton's impact.
Film and cinema have developed significantly since the late 19th century. The kinetoscope, invented in 1891, was the first device to display moving images but could only be viewed by one person at a time. In 1894, the phantoscope was invented, allowing for the first public projections of films. The Lumiere brothers' 1895 cinématographe was a more portable projector that helped popularize moving pictures. By the early 1900s, narrative films like The Great Train Robbery emerged, and sound was introduced to films with The Jazz Singer in 1927. Major developments in the 1970s included the rise of the blockbuster film and higher budgets, exemplified by the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar

5. Mood Board
I have included the director Quentin
Tarantino as I want to include a feature
similar to the blood and gore which he
includes in his films. This is because it
makes the film seem more brutal which is
exactly the theme I want to convey in my
product. However, I will use mine to create
suspense whereas, he uses his in a slightly
more light hearted way. I also don’t think
mine will be as extreme as his. As well as
that, I feel this will appear to my target
audience the most.
I have included the a
scene from the film the
machinist starting
Christian Bale. This is
because the whole film
has a very dark and
depressed tone to it which
matches the story of the
film perfectly. This is
similar to what I want to
do with my trailer as I
want the aesthetic of my
film to almost tell the
story as it will portray the
trailers dark story.
I have included the film
taken in my mood bard.
This is because it fits into a
similar genre as my
product. I would also like to
include some similar
features to what Taken
does. For example, I would
like to include some of
taken intensity as the film
manages to build this up
very well. The seriousness
of the film is also an aspect
I’d like to include.
I have included the film jaws. This is because not only does the film
include an element of violence and brutality, the film also builds up
tension incredibly well. It does this by having an incredible soundtrack
dedicated to the shark which plays every time an attack may happen.
This forces the audience to be on the edge of their seat as it makes
the scene very intense. The fact that the film also doesn't’t reveal the
shark till later in the film leaves a sense of mystery which is also a
great technique as it creates even more tension and suspense.
I have included the
Netflix series Dark on
my mood board. This
is because its colour
scheme is very
similar to what I
want to include for
the day shots in my
product. This is
because it creates a
very dull and
emotionless
atmosphere which is
the theme I want to
convey in my trailer.
This will relate to the
emotionless attitude
of the
stalker/murderer.
6. Mood Board
I have included the director
Tim Burton on my mood
board. This is because
Burtons films are usually
very dark themed however
are also quite unique. This
inspires me as although I
want my product to be very
dark and gripping I also
want it to be unique and
stand out from other
products in the same genre.
I choose the film Dracula
Untold to go on my mood
board. This was mainly
because of the gloomy
colour tone of the film. It
creates a very dark
atmosphere for the film
which is exactly what I want
to include in my product. It
allows the audience to know
the films theme without
even having to really watch it
as it portrays such a clear
theme. The film also includes
quite violent aspects which is
also similar to what I would
like to include in my product
however, I think they will be
more extreme and gory in
my product.
This Dark Knight Rises poster
interests me mainly because
of its extremely dark theme.
It highly reflects the theme
of the film and advertises the
film truthfully. Although, I
am planning to have my
colour pallet this dark for my
product, its mature and dark
theme incredibly inspires
me.
The film IT has given me
inspiration for my product
because of its thriller genre.
The film builds up the
tension well and creates a
very scary atmosphere.
Although I may not want to
exactly scare the audience I
do want to build up tension
and suspense. This is so the
trailers purpose is achieved.
I have included the film the Dark Knight on my
mood board. This is because the films action
sequences and suspenseful scenes highly inspire
me. I would like to include some similar techniques
in my thriller as they work perfectly for their
purpose.
American psycho inspired me
because of Christians bales
psycho nature. I would love to
try this films element of
danger and intensity in my
trailer. The film is also directed
incredibly well.
7. Mood Board
This piece of photography
inspires me because of its
colour scheme. The picture
includes very low saturation
and was clearly taken in quite
low lighting. I also love the
background. It creates a very
dark and mature tone for the
photo. Although everything is
very dark in the photo, the
man still highly stands out
from the background. The
photographer as managed to
do this by focusing on the
man and trying to capture
every detail on his face
I might use a similar
technique in my product as
works incredibly effectively.
I have included these images because of their level of saturation. The images include a
very low level of saturation which is what I would like to include in my product. This
creates a very eerie feel to the trailer. I also like the location of the images as they both
look quite discrete which may be a good location to film in for my trailer. One of the
images fog is also good inspiration for me. The dead tress in the right image also creates
quite a suspenseful atmosphere which would perfectly in my product as I want to make it
as gripping as possible.
I have included Batman begins.
This inspires me because the film
includes a dark tone which is
similar to what I want to include.
As well as that, the film is also
filmed and portrayed very
realistically. This is because of the
director, the sets and the
characters. I think I would like to
include this element in my product
because it makes the film seem
more intense and exciting.
The film Heat inspires me a lot. This
I because it fits into the same genre
as my product therefore I can
collect inspiration from many
different aspects of the film. For
example, the film incudes quite a
dark tone because of its shots and
low saturation. It also includes
intense action scenes which creates
excitement for the viewer.
Although my product is only a
trailer I would still like to include
action a then it portrays the tone
for the rest of the film.
I have included this shot of James from
the first twilight film. This is because the
character of James shares a few qualities
of what I want my villain in my product to
have. James is very obsessive and shows
no mercy. This is one of my inspirations
for my villain. The film as whole is also
filmed in very low saturated light. This
creates a moody and negative
atmosphere.
8. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
My mood board inspires my project because it includes many different types of films which I have collected
inspiration from. They have inspired my product because of many reasons. Firstly, the different colour tones
included in the films. I have choose films with a very low saturated colour tone as this will portray the
message and create the correct atmosphere for my thriller genre trailer. I have also took inspiration from
characters. I have choose stalker who will share similar qualities to the one I want to include in my product.
This allows me to see a good example and try to translate that into my product. My mood board includes
some location ideas which I have took inspiration from. This is from images I've found and films I have
watched. The mood board allows me to see my idea visually and collect new ideas from existing products. As
well as that, I have collected inspiration from different directors. I have thought about the styles they use an
the type of films they create. This inspires me as I can take what features and techniques they include and
try to use that in my final product.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
My mood board will highly influence my final product. This is because I have collected many different ideas
and techniques from it. This includes different colour tones. I have decided that I will use similar colour tones
to different films and scenes that I have included on my mood board. This is because the films I collected
may have been either a similar tone or a similar genre to my product therefore, the techniques and features
included in them can be adapted into my product. I will also definitely use the idea of suspense and
excitement that many of the films I included on my mood board include. This is because some of them like
Jaws and the dark knight are directed very well therefore I know the techniques included in the films work
and fulfil their purpose.
9. Key Influences
I have included the director Christopher Nolan as one of my key influences. This is
because Nolan has had a huge impact on the film industry and some of his critically
acclaimed “masterpieces” have indulged into the thriller genre. This includes his
dark knight trilogy and Inception. Both these films include some some significant
features in them which I want to try to incorporate into my product. Firstly, both
films include incredible scores, most famously the dark knight score. The scores are
so renowned and memorable. However, that is not heir best quality. Especially in
the dark Knight, the batman and joker scores work perfectly to create tension and
build up suspense throughout the film. It does this by playing whenever a sense of
excitement or danger could occur. This leaves the audience on the edge of their seat
and completely absorbed in the film therefore, fulfilling the films purpose. Nolan's
films also include very well directed action scenes and a highly gripping stories
which again leaves the audience indulged in the film.
I have included the writer Stephen King as on of my key influences because he may not be a
thriller film maker but he has had a huge impact on the thriller genre as a whole. His books
and intense stories have shown how to build tension just from words on a page. This
influences my product as from his work I can see how to build up tension immensely and try
to translate that on screen. Without King, the concept of building up suspense and tension
may not be the same.
10. Key Influences
The film the Dark knight is one of my key influences. This is because nearly everything
about the film is perfect. But, most important to me, it fits the thriller genre
fantastically. First of all, this is because the action scenes in the film are very well
executed and directed. The fast pace and excitement of the action scenes create an
exciting and intense tone leaving the audience gripped to the film. I would like to try
and achieve this in my trailer as I want my product to be as intense as possible. This
will convey the tone of the actual film therefore allowing the audience to have a slight
preview of what they are in for. As well as that, the soundtrack in the film adds to the
intensity of the film as the two main characters have their own scores. This creates
intensity as we have an idea of what is going to happen but it is not exact. This leaves
the audience on the edge of their seat which is a key purpose for a thriller.
The film includes a very dark theme and tone. This influences my product as it also
going to include a very dark and emotionless tone to my product. This is to convey the
negative message of the trailer and also to portray the emotionless nature of the
stalker. The films seriousness and realistic nature is also an an aspect I will include in
my trailer. This is because my trailer is based on an obsessive stalker therefore it needs
to be taken very seriously. I want the aspect of realism in my product as I want the
tension and intensity in my trailer to be as high as possible therefore I need the
audience to almost believe in what they are watching.
11. Key Influences
The film the boy next door is a key influence to my product. This film may not be the
best made film, however, it did influence my product because the film is based on an
obsessive psycho therefore sharing many ideas with my product. From this film, I got
how to change theme as the film starts very lighthearted however, as as the film
progresses, the tone completely changes. I would like to include a similar feature in my
trailer as this builds up suspense and fits perfectly into the thriller genre.
The film Fear is included in my key influences. This is because the film is
about a psychopath who sees the girl he loves as his possession. This
influenced me as my trailer will be about a man who meets a young girl and
instantly gets attached. From Fear, I can use the films build up as it builds up
to the climax well. Mark Wahlberg's performance is also good as he portrays
the insanity of obsessive nature of his character well therefore I can use
some of his skills and techniques in my product.
12. Key Influences
The character of James from the first twilight film was definitely a key influence for
me. Although, the actual film is very poorly written, some of James's characteristics
are very similar to wat I want my stalker to be like. He is very obsessive and tracks
Bella wherever she goes. This influenced my product as I want my villain t share that
quality and track the young girl wherever she goes. If executed correctly, this create
a very suspenseful product. The actual film Twilight also influenced me in the way
that the colour scheme reflects the emotion in the film. I will use a similar feature in
my product as it intensely portrays the tone and theme of the product.
