Q1) In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
Evaluation question 1.
Hazal Ucar
AS media Foundation portfolio
 Foundation portfolio is a task were a group of students work together and
build up primary and secondary ideas up and produce a thriller movie.
While producing the thriller movie we also made a preliminary task which
was a practise task of filming a short scenario. Our aim for our preliminary
task was to get use to our roles and to figure out our strengths and
weaknesses before we started to film our thriller movie. The preliminary task
really helped everyone out in my group because we all knew what our
roles where and because we had experience before we done our thriller
movie.
 My thriller follows the convention of a thriller because as a director I've ensured that
my thriller includes; Low key lighting quick cuts, shadows, tension music, angles and
shots, diegetic sound, black and white shots. Therefore, these convections are
important to the thriller industry because all the conventions take part in a thriller movie
in an effective way for example the low key light creates tension and it will highlight to
the audience that something is either going to happen or something is going to
appear on the screen.
Does your thriller follow conventions of a thriller?
Angles and shots:
In my thriller movie I mostly used close ups and low
level of framing because it builds up suspense and
mystery in the beginning for example in the movie
seven low level of angles and close ups have been
used several times.
Shadows:
In my thriller I included shadows to make the
audience wonder who the shadow belongs
to and this creates tension because the
audience will be willing to find out who the
character is. Therefore, Shadows create an
eerie atmosphere.
Does your thriller follow conventions of a thriller?
‘That one night’
‘I spit on your grave’
Lighting:
In my thriller movie I mainly used low key light to represent
darkness and fear. Therefore, I got influenced by the movie ‘I
spit on your grave’ and ‘scream’ because the lighting that
was used made the audience feel the fear the character was
going through which I also wanted to create within my thriller.
Furthermore, a lighting within a thriller could also cream the
suspense the characters what the audience to feel because if
the lighting is low the audience will know something's not
going right.‘scream’
Does your thriller follow conventions of a
thriller?
‘That one night’
‘The shinning’
 Iconography:
The iconography that was used in ‘the shinning’ had a really huge
impact on the audience especially me because it stood out and
the blood resembles evilness and death which creates tension in
the movie. I also chose blood as a huge iconography in my movie
because it will make the audience feel disturbed because of the
amount of blood that is used. Therefore I also used a knife to give
the audience the clue of how the victim died. A knife is a very
famous iconography in thriller genre movies because it also
symbolises the evilness the character carries.
‘That one night’
Generic conventions of a thriller…
Conventions of a Thriller; Low key lighting quick cuts, shadows, tension
music, angles and shots, diegetic sound, black and white shots
Sound is also an important micro feature. Sound
holds many conventions relating to the thriller
genre. Therefore, sound is used to create tension
with high pitch or low pitch music being played
either as diegetic or non-diegetic material within
the scene. High pitched sound is often used as it
makes the spectator uncomfortable and shows
how the scene might not be disturbing or
something unexpected might happen. Many
other uses of sound are used in thrillers and even
within dialogue is usually unique to other genres,
narrators can be found in many thriller films
which create a more direct tension to the
spectator making it seem as if they are
experiencing the film from the characters point.
Lighting is another main element that is important
in a thriller movie. Low-key lighting is most likely to
be used in a thriller movie, this is because it
creates the mise-en-scene. The use of shadows
through lighting is a convention of thriller movies.
Sometimes shadows represent evil and darkness
within people in a thriller movie.
Generic conventions within my thriller…
‘That one night’
Characters:
In my thriller movie I made the antagonist and
protagonist as a male character and I have
used a female character as a victim. My
thriller follows the conventions of a thriller
because the protagonist is always a brave
male character who seeks to restore the
equilibrium. Therefore, within the thriller genre
the typical characters are a male protagonist
to show its bravery and a female victim to
highlight the innocence of the character.
Settings:
While I was doing my primary (questionnaire) and
secondary research I decided to use a house setting
because a house setting is a huge and typical setting within
the thriller industry. Therefore, I decided to use a small house
because it will create more tension by the audience not
knowing what will happen in such a small atmosphere.
Therefore, In the movie se7en they also used a house setting
but however they used different sizes of house for example
one of the disturbing scenes took place in a small house
which created suspense and chilling scenes.

Generic conventions within my thriller…
 Editing:
While editing I made sure our movie had a soft flow to create he
emotion we wanted the audience to feel. Therefore, by editing we
included many different edits for example we included different kinds
of jump cuts, we included back and white effects which also shows
some bits in colour(blood). By editing my thriller I made my story line
stand out more and the audience can understand the story line even
better with the edition that was made. Furthermore, the edition
helped me create different angles and movements because I
cropped some scenes and put hem together with different scenes to
create different angles and movements. Moreover, I got influenced
by the movie ‘insidious’ because the edit created different emotion
within the movie. The edits that ‘insidious’ included weren’t typical
because not all thriller movies include strong edits in they're movie.
Generic conventions within my thriller…
 Costume, hair and make up:
Costume, hair and make up is very important because the
audience should be able to figure out the role of the
character once they see the character for example a
antagonist would wear dull colours such as black or dark
blue. Therefore, they would have dark make up with messy
hair this will symbolise the evilness and the careless
personality they have. Furthermore, in my thriller movie my
character has messy hair with dark make up on however my
character is wearing a white t-shirt with black jeans to show
that my character may change roles. Moreover, the
costume colour, hair and make up in orphan really
influenced me because I knew the character roles within
the costume, hair and make up.
‘Orphan’
‘That one night’
 Facial expression and body language:
Facial express and body language is important because it
symbolises the characters feeling to the audience and the
audience is able to figure our the personality the character
carries. Therefore, the facial expression and body language
should match what the character is saying because the body
language and facial expression is a away of describing what
they are saying. In the movie scream we can see the
characters feeling from they're facial expression and we can
also see how frightened she is from her closed posture body
language.
Generic conventions within my thriller…
‘That one night’
‘scream’
Conventions of opening credits..
In my thriller I have used simple but bold and
highlighted text for my opening credits because I
want my opening credits to be eye catchy but not
interesting for the character to keep they're eye on.
This is because I wouldn’t want the audience to miss
out on the scenes. Therefore I've placed my opening
credits on the left hand corner changing according
to the changes in the scenes. While I was doing my
research ‘se7en’ influenced me because the
opening credits were simple but eye catchy and very
modern.
‘se7en’
Conventions of target audience…
 Thriller tend to get the age certificates 15 and 18 mostly. The reason why thrillers
mostly get age certificates of 15 and 18 is that there is a lot of violence and
graphic scenes. A thriller that is 15 will be a lighter thriller where there will be
some bad language and nudity where appropriate. There will be violence and
murder scene but the scene will not be dedicated to an attack and it will not
show the slow and painful death the victim has deal with. A 18 thriller is much
more detailed in its content which it shows there are violence scene which show
graphic images and injuries. There are a lot of sexually motivated attacks shown
and other sexual assaults. This is only suitable for 18 and over.
 Therefore, I gave my thriller a15 age certificate because it doesn’t show how the
disturbing cuts happened and it doesn’t include false language. However, my
thriller included a lot of blood which is an age certificate 15 because young
children might get overly affected cause of the amount of blood been used and
not everyone is able to accept blood in a natural way.
My thriller following a conventional narrative
structure…
 While I was building my thoughts and research up to
create a thriller movie I followed Aristotle narrative
theory because my thriller starts with a situation and
while its trying to be solved an incident appears for
example when my main character (antagonist) sees a
dead body they're trying to solve the situation and
trying to figure out how it happened. However , then
the audience realises something suspicious with the
antagonist. Furthermore, then it comes to a point where
the situation cannot be solved because the antagonist
becomes processed. Moreover, then the character
starts having flashbacks to figure out what has
happened and at the end our antagonist was our
actual protagonist which highlights that the character
was fighting them selves.
Character representation
My characters are presented conventionally in my thriller movie because my
protagonist, antagonist and victim are presented and act the way they're
character should be acting and look the way they're character should look. For
example the antagonist was wearing a clean whit t-shirt with black shoes and jeans
this is because the antagonist then changes his role to a protagonist. Therefore, in
the thriller movie the antagonist has blood on they're t-shirt the blood is to show the
audience that the character has changed sides and has become the antagonist.
The victim is wearing a white t-shirt and light purple trousers to highlight they're
innocence within he movie. However, the victim is also wearing a black cardigan
with shinning bits inside to highlight that she was young and innocent because
only a young girl would wear a shinning cardigan
