1. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE OR
CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW
DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS
OR ISSUES?
2. The media provide a wide range of information, and media conventions underlie all the
media we encounter every day.
Media norms represent the audience's understanding of the media or its connotations.
Media codes generally fall into one of three categories: textual codes, technical codes, or
symbolic codes. The way code is presented is called a convention.
Before filming, and even before I had fully decided on the type of film I wanted to create, I
did research on genre conventions, and then more detailed research on the conventions
of the romance genre I chose to work with.
Our story explores in depth the contrast between loneliness, squalor and pain during
COVID-19 and the return to public view after COVID-19 is over.
For example, during the COVID-19 outbreak, the protagonist was locked in the house all
day long, leaving the house in a mess with garbage on the floor and table. The
protagonist's eyes are dull and his actions are full of exhaustion. Later, when the COVID-
19 lockdown was lifted, life returned to normal, but she could not speak because she had
not spoken for a long time.
3. costuming
In my videos, there is nothing special about the clothes, they are just common outfits
worn by adolescent boys. In COVID-19, the protagonist's clothes are sloppy and full of
stains, which can highlight that some people stay at home and don't need to go out or
see people, so they become lazy and don't like to clean up. The protagonist after
COVID-19 is neatly dressed, confident and generous, and the psychological changes
of the protagonist are also shown in the clothing.
4. I made a questionnaire before and found that most of the people
were teenagers (below 18), so I made the script based on this
questionnaire. COVID-19 is a major global disease that has occurred
in recent years, and it is inevitable that some viewers will feel the
same way, so I am confident that the audience will be interested in
my film!
5. GENRE CONVENTIONS
• The first thing I presented to the audience in my opening clip was a date that said "April 22, 2020", which happened
to be the time when COVID-19 swept the world. Later, I used a lot of close-ups, which also borrowed from " back to
the future" I really like the way this movie starts. The opening scene is a tabletop looking down. The messy tabletop is
full of garbage. The dirty ground, coupled with the overall dark and gloomy tone of the first half, and the tense music
at the beginning give the entire first half a mysterious feeling. Feel. The entire first half continues to the constantly
updated number of days. Another date brings us from "April 22, 2020" to "September 1, 2023". September 1st is a
very common first day of school, so viewers will think so when they see this date.
• The overhead shot of the protagonist walking down the stairs, paired with the relaxed and lazy music in the later
period, forms a strong contrast with the music in the first half, and also expresses the change in the heroine's
mentality. The overall tone is cooler, which also means that although the heroine is liberated, she is still lonely. It
wasn't until I saw the male protagonist that the overall color tone changed significantly, from cold to warm. The
heroine who went to strike up a conversation could not make a sound, causing the embarrassment that the hero
could not understand. This was also reflected in the main shot later - an awkward yet polite smile. The sound of the
final flame can also be imagined as the heroine's inner flame going from being extinguished in the early stage to
being ignited.
• Our opening sequence contains written codes that adhere to opening sequence conventions. It contains codes such
as the production company name, title, and production credits.
6. REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUP
• The sequence shows a girl and a boy - naturally engaging the audience. It
shows the changes in a young girl's life during and after the epidemic.
• As already mentioned, this girl also represents the different changes
before and after the epidemic of certain characters and social groups who
have the same experience during the epidemic.
