2. 1. What is your song? Why did you pick it?
We chose 1-800-273-8255 by Logic. This is because it
is a unique song in the way that it focusses in and
highlights multiple social issues that are rarely
talked about in society. The song title itself is
the american national suicide prevention hotline.
This gives us a lot of themes and paths to
develop throughout the video to give the video
more layers and therefore more effect.
3. 2. Who is your artist?
He will be a very down to earth, regular person that doesn’t appear to stand out from everyone else in any
way apart from his musical talent that cannot be seen from the outside. This is because you always
have to get to know a person before you can judge them and know them, reflected with his average
outer appearance.
He is young (late teens/early 20’s) and average height so he appears relatable and can actually tell the
story while not seeming like a picture perfect image put over a completely contrasting theme.
4. 3. Appealing to the target audience
Our target audience consists of teenagers and young adults, the most common demographic that listen to
rap music so the track selected will appeal to them. Within rap there are mainly two sharply
contrasting types of videos. The first of which is purely commercial exhobishionist, where the artist is
centre focus and the video doesn’t have many layers of meaning. The second is a narrative video which
has underlying themes which will often link to issues and themes such as youth identity and social
injustice.
5. Our video will tackle themes such as mental health and its effects on both people who suffer from it and
those around them.
Mental health is becoming a more and more prevalent issue in society, with the stigma around it being
fought. On average, more and more young people are suffering from mental health issues, such as
depression: with one in four girls having depression by the time they’re 14.
Our video will be narrative focused, telling a story through the video. Typically rap videos with a strong
multi layered narrative are done by more politically aware/active artists, this draws in a more active
and politically aware audience that are keen to listen as this is the less common style of rap/music
video.
6. 4. Style of video
Our video will be a more narrative focused video with it’s key focus on the main characters, A
and B (choosing to remain nameless to show this could be happening to anyone.) and the
central theme of how characters mental health is handled by others.
A and B are close friends. B has depression but it is kept a secret until the end of the video. The
video follows A as B gradually begins to isolate himself from everyone (coming across as
pushing A away) and follows him as his own mental health begins to deteriorate due to the
fact he feels he is losing his closest friend and subsequently begins to feel lonely and
isolated.
7. As A begins to feel like has been abandoned (making the audience feel sympathy for A and
resentment towards B) the video then switches to B and replay’s the video’s key events from
his perspective (while also providing wider context to why he made the decisions he did).
This will then show the audience how depression can make someone a completely different
person and causes them to act differently. A will then confront B about his issues only to find
out they are experiencing the exact same thing, causing them to resolve the issues and help
each other through it.
Influence comes from rap videos with strong narrative structure and themes on social issues such
as Meek Mill: Young Black America and Macklemore: Same love.
8. 5. Visual style: Mise-en-scene, Camera, Editing
Mise-en-scene is extremely important to music video. Colour will be used to show the shift in perspective,
with dulled colours connoting to a more gloomy atmosphere which will present when viewing things
from the friends perspective. In regards to clothing, the depressed friend will have more closed off
clothing to show their isolation and separation from everyone else: such as zipped up coats and
hoodies. While the other friend will have more open clothing with more arm/skin showing as a way of
showing they are not so closed off.
In regards to editing: action match, establishing shots, fades to black and slow camera movements to
highlight the tone of certain scenes.
9. 6. Ancillary Tasks
We decided to use a poster and a digipak because it is quicker to achieve to a high standard than a
website and can be more simple but effective.
Visual style will mainly feature grey and black as colours, with a brighter secondary colour used on edges
and accents to represent the ‘silver lining’ in life.
10. 7. Unique selling point
The unique selling point of the video is that it is emotionally driven and focuses on genuine social issues
that affect the lives of millions of people everyday around the world. The point of the video is it should
shed light on a mental illness that is commonly thrown around but rarely truly understanded. It will also
be shot in a way that takes the audience on the same journey as anyone else that has never
experienced depression and emphasises how unexpecting it often is.
