There are two main reasons for land constraint: rising demand for land and limited supply of land. The rising demand for land is due to factors such as population growth, increasing demand for housing, growth of industries to provide jobs, development of transport systems, increasing demand for arable land to grow crops, and increasing demand for recreational spaces as populations grow.

Given the increased prevalence of drought and rising average temperatures throughout the American West, and considering the historically-established prevalence of wildfire as a keystone component of western ecological regimes, I have become interested in exploring adaptive approaches to land-use planning that accepts wildfire as a constraint to be accepted and designed for, rather than reacted to and fought against. As an outgrowth of this interest, I created a project utilizing data from CalFire, the USGS, and the Los Angeles County GeoPortal, implementing GIS analysis to investigate wildfire as an ongoing land-use constraint within the state of California. This project involved the creation of eight distinct GIS maps conveying different spatial data related to wildfire throughout California. The key findings of this project indicated that the most dense population centers within Southern California are also the regions of the state most prone to large, frequent wildfire events. The project culminated in the creation of a suitability analysis for future land development considering wildfire as a constraint within Los Angeles County, California. This was accomplished via a weighted overlay analysis that included data related to wildfire threat levels, wildfire history, projected urban expansion within the county, and areas designated for ecological conservation.
