This document discusses the health and human rights challenges faced by sexual minorities in Kenya. It notes that 15.2% of new HIV infections are through men having sex with men (MSM), and 60% of MSM are currently living in heterosexual relationships. Criminalization of same-sex relations under Kenyan law presents challenges to providing HIV prevention information and services to sexual minorities. The health impacts extend beyond sexual minorities to their heterosexual partners and wider society. Transgender and intersex individuals face difficulties accessing appropriate medical care due to lack of legal protections and social stigma against sexual minorities. Recognition of sexual minorities and empowering healthcare providers are needed to improve access to HIV services for these marginalized groups in Kenya.

This document discusses amending a Tennessee law that bans comprehensive sex education and only allows abstinence-only education. The summary argues that amending the law would benefit at-risk groups like African Americans, who have higher HIV/STD rates, as well as sexual minority youth. It proposes that sex education should include information on safe sex practices in addition to abstinence. The document also provides examples from California showing that comprehensive sex education has been more effective at reducing teen pregnancy rates compared to abstinence-only education in Tennessee.

The document discusses issues related to women's safety, empowerment, and equality in India. It provides statistics showing India ranks poorly in areas like safety, child marriage, rape, and female literacy. It argues the root cause is patriarchy and the systemic oppression of women from birth until death. Some key issues highlighted include lack of safety, financial independence, healthcare access, involvement in public life, and gender-biased laws and implementation. Solutions proposed include progressive gender-friendly legislation, increased financial support for women's programs, establishing a new empowerment commission to protect and advocate for women's rights, and raising awareness about women's rights.
This document discusses issues related to advancing the sexual and reproductive health and human rights of men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. It notes that MSM living with HIV face double stigma due to fear/ignorance around HIV transmission and negative attitudes towards MSM. Young MSM living with HIV face additional challenges accessing healthcare without parental consent. The document argues for a rights-based approach and inclusion of MSM in policymaking to address their disproportionately high rates of HIV infection worldwide due to criminalization, discrimination, and lack of access to appropriate healthcare services.

IFRC's policy to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA)Gry Tina Tinde
This presentation that I held on 25 September 2018 outlines IFRC's newly adopted policy to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation and abuse of persons affected by disaster and crisis. It was held in an all-staff meeting at Geneva, with regional IFRC offices following via videconference. The presentation sparked a lively debate on, among other topics: Roles and responsibilities of managers, staff and specific departments, the IFRC practice that exists of not covering perpetrators of sexual exploitation and abuse by diplomatic immunity and the need for strict confidentiality in addressing SEA issues. We also discussed the importance of applying a survivor-centered approach, setting up appropriate community-based complaint mechanisms, provide assistance to survivors and working closely with Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies around the globe on these tasks.
1) The document discusses advocacy for child sexual abuse through the author's experiences learning about resources in their community. They attended presentations from organizations like Justice4PAKids and met with survivors to learn about the issue.
2) While progress is being made through organizations and improved responses from legal and social services, child sexual abuse remains a taboo topic kept secret especially in affluent areas.
3) Schools in particular seem underrepresented in training and advocacy efforts. Increased education of teachers and administrators could help identify more cases.
This document discusses women's empowerment in India. It defines the differences between sex and gender, and explains that women's empowerment involves redistributing power away from patriarchal systems and male dominance. The document then discusses factors that facilitate empowerment and laws in India aimed at protecting and empowering women.
The document discusses key issues related to gender inequality including reproductive health, stewardship of natural resources, economic empowerment, educational empowerment, and political empowerment. It provides statistics showing disparities between men and women in education rates, adolescent fertility rates, labor force participation, gender inequality index, and maternal mortality. Some facts noted include that fewer women than men are in the paid workforce in India, more female-headed households live below the poverty line, and female literacy rates lag behind male rates. Proposed solutions include volunteer-driven women's education, sensitizing police and justice systems, ensuring women's safety in public and private organizations, and defensive training.
This document discusses female foeticide in India. It summarizes that:
1) Female foeticide is widespread in India, where technologies allow parents to determine and selectively abort female fetuses, skewing the sex ratio.
2) Cultural and religious factors contribute to the lower status of women in India and preference for male children, fueling female foeticide.
3) Laws banning sex determination have had little impact due to lack of implementation and medical professionals' role in the practice. Widespread change in attitudes and empowering women is needed to address this issue.
This document provides an introduction and overview of a project by Oxfam India to address violence against women in Uttarakhand, India. This document discusses sexually transmitted infections among long-distance truck drivers in India from a social perspective. It finds that truck drivers engage in high-risk sexual behaviors such as paying for sex while away from home for long periods of time. This puts them at risk of contracting STIs like HIV/AIDS. Social factors that influence this behavior include separation from partners, stress, alcohol use, and power dynamics with sex workers. STIs have become a major public health issue in India, disproportionately affecting young people, and truck drivers play a role in spreading infections from urban to rural areas. Prevention efforts need to address the social and environmental factors that influence truck drivers' risk behaviors.

This article discusses how extreme poverty increases women's vulnerability to HIV transmission in Malawi, violating their right to life. It summarizes the findings of a study by Women and Law in Southern Africa that examined women's experiences with HIV/AIDS. The study found that poverty drives high-risk behaviors and gender inequality perpetuates women's vulnerability. Since there is no HIV cure, persistent poverty and powerlessness infringes on women's right to life. A rights-based approach is needed to address development and poverty reduction in the context of the HIV pandemic.

This document discusses gender, sexuality, and HIV/AIDS. It explores how gender and sexuality impact vulnerability to HIV, focusing on heterosexual transmission which has been the most common way HIV spreads among women. Gender refers to social expectations of male and female roles and behavior, while sexuality encompasses whom one has sex with and under what circumstances. Factors like economic dependence, norms around virginity and motherhood, and violence against women all heighten risk. However, rigid gender norms also increase men's risk by promoting behaviors like having multiple partners and early sexual experience in order to prove mascul

The Female Sexual Function Index comes out as an assessment tool which mainly focuses on women, therefore, accomplishing its intended purpose. Each of the 19 items tested by the series of questions in the questionnaire touches on the sexual experiences of women prior to, during, or before sexual intercourse making it an appropriate tool to measure the sexual functioning of women. This tool is beneficial for clinical diagnosis of female sexual dysfunction and can be used to identify signs and symptoms of female orgasmic disorder (FOD) and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in women (Metson, 2003).
How? The series of questions focuses on six domains which are; desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Each of the questions is classified under either domain mainly focusing on the female experiences over time. For example, when it comes to desire, there are two questions which ask about the frequency of sexual desire in the past one month as well as the degree of sexual desire over the same time period. Thus, we can argue that each of the domains has been intensively investigated to come up with the most viable result to be used for the relevant clinical purposes. Besides this, the assessment tool is reliable and relevant since it can be used to indicate different variables in each of the tested domains. The different responses for every question have been assigned different scores which are consistent with the kind of feedback which is to be expected.

According to the CDC the HIV/AIDS reports, African-Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and disparity continues to widen. African Americans represent approximately 12% of the U.S. population, but they account for approximately 43% of HIV diagnoses. The African-Americans who die of HIV/Aids represents 44% of the deaths in the U.S. The worst hit category are the black women, the youths, gays and bisexual men. Dr. Donna Hubbard McCree (2013) notes that HIV/AIDS epidemics among the blacks results from factors including poverty, lack of awareness of HIV status, stigma that prevent the majority from seeking help, high rate of sexually transmitted infection, sexual networks, lack of access to adequate health care and lack sexual education among the most affected population.
Even though recent reports demonstrate encouraging trends of reducing HIV infections among the black population, new diagnoses still occur among the black gay and bisexual men. Therefore, even with continued intervention, disproportionate trends continue among the black population continue to be re.
Berer gender and rights oriented health systems research cape town 2 oct 2014Lisa Hallgarten
Reproductive Health Matters publishes many papers on gender and rights-based issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights. These papers analyze topics like gender-based violence, unsafe abortion, adolescent pregnancy, and gender inequalities in health policies and programs. They also discuss sexual and reproductive rights and how to implement rights-based approaches in health services. While gender and rights are important analytical tools, actually creating change on these issues is very slow. Future research needs to test more effective strategies to reduce gender inequality and better respect sexual and reproductive rights in order to move beyond analysis into real activism and ground-level change.
This manual was developed to equip young people with a better understanding of the peculiar issues faced by young women and girls, how gender constructs and gender inequality has contributed to this, and how young people can advocate for more equitable societies and gender just communities and institutions. Young people will also be equipped to develop change pathways for tackling gender discrimination including applying a gender analysis in all their advocacy initiatives and leveraging movements and collective efforts for gender justice.
Violence against women and gender equality in the philippines: Are they related?Jabin Deguma
This document summarizes a study that examined the relationship between reported cases of violence against women and gender equality in the Philippines from 2006 to 2017. The study found that both reported violence and gender equality, as measured by the Gender Gap Index, have been increasing over time based on quadratic and linear trend models, respectively. Symbolic regression analysis also found a high degree of positive association between increased gender equality and reported violence. The study concludes that continued efforts are needed to further promote gender equality and prevent violence against women in the Philippines.

This document summarizes research on the transgender population in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and the challenges they face related to HIV, health, and human rights. It notes that transgender people suffer discrimination worldwide and lack legal protections in most of Asia. In Vietnam, they are often conflated with MSM and lack recognition of their gender identity. The document reviews limited available data on health issues like HIV prevalence and access to transition-related care. It estimates the transgender population in Ho Chi Minh City to be 2,000-3,000 and notes a lack of targeted programs and legal protections for this at-risk group.

Draft op-ed: Communities of color will be the deciders in 2020Tawana Jacobs, APR
Op-ed drafted for Dorian Warren in anticipation of June 2020 Democratic presidential debate regarding the level of influence communities of color will have in the 2020 election.
Ghost wrote an op-ed for two child care activists -- one an early childhood educator and mom in New Mexico; the other a mom advocate in Michigan -- to share their stories and connect the issue to the upcoming 2020 election.
Op-ed placement. First published by The Progressive, then syndicated by the Tribune News Service and published in more than ten newspapers including the Seattle Times and NY Daily News.
The author worries about who will take care of her new grandbaby as both of the child's parents work. She notes that Michigan has a child care crisis, with nearly half of children living in "child care deserts" and the high cost of care making it a struggle for many families. While efforts to expand preschool are good, more needs to be done to address accessibility and affordability of child care. The author recalls her own difficulties affording child care for two children over a decade ago and hopes state representatives will take action to increase assistance and support for families and child care providers.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church Marketing Communications Plan 2015-16Tawana Jacobs, APR
The document outlines Emmanuel Lutheran Church's marketing communications plan from January 2015 to June 2016. It aims to refine and upgrade the church's communications to better reach its membership and improve its community profile. Key objectives include developing an initial marketing plan, upgrading the church website, increasing communications capacity among leadership and staff, and strengthening the church's presence in the local community. The strategy involves three phases - improving existing communications, completing a new website, and launching the site while continuing communications development. Progress will be evaluated quarterly.
Soon after beginning employment with Emmanuel Lutheran Church as the part-time communications director in March 2014, I began conducting in-depth research and analysis of the church’s current marketing communications efforts. The purpose of this work was to establish an accurate starting point for strategy development and determine immediate needs.
Surprisingly, a number of the stakeholders interviewed for the report lacked a clear understanding of how building enthusiasm among current members and strengthening Emmanuel’s presence in the community could increase church membership.
Emmanuel is part of a nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people stepping outside of churches to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by in parking lots, at transit centers and on street corners with ashes and encourage them to gain a better sense of self by examining their humility and mortality and seek renewal.
Emmanuel’s Communications Program Illustration Talking Points
Upon its completion, ELC’s new website will be the centerpiece of the church’s communications program. Its purpose is to be a comprehensive resource for the congregation and serve as a community resource to potential members and partners in the Vienna/Oakton/Fairfax community. The new website will begin the much-needed process of increasing clarity of mission and provide a level of consistency for sharing ELC information internally and externally and build ELC’s profile in the broader community.

Fenton Communications completed its evaluation of communications firms for a Ford Foundation program in Indonesia. It reviewed five initial firms, narrowing it to three to submit revised proposals. Fenton analyzed the proposals using criteria like skills, understanding of issues, adherence to scope, budget, and references. It recommends Klirkom as most qualified due to creative thinking, consistency, and a reasonable budget. InterMatrix is also recommended due to experience with related issues and competent proposal. MACS909 is eliminated for insufficient understanding and a higher budget. The Ford Foundation will interview Klirkom and InterMatrix in the week of May 7th before selecting a firm.

Women’s Rights are Human Rights: International Organizations Take on Sexual and Reproductive Rights
1. Women’s Rights are Human Rights: International Organizations Take
on Sexual and Reproductive Rights
By Tawana Jacobs and Dina Bogecho
For more than a generation, human rights organizations have been at the forefront
of the movement to prevent and end abuses to the rights of individuals around the world.
Following the adoption of the International Conference on Population and Development
(ICPD) Programme of Action ten years ago, many organizations amended their original
missions and expanded their work to specifically address the reproductive and sexual
rights of women. Leaders from two organizations that set the standard for much of the
human rights community—Gita Sahgal, director of Amnesty International's Gender Unit
and LaShawn Jefferson, executive director of the Women’s Rights Division of Human
Rights Watch (HRW)—recently talked with us about how the work of their
organizations, and the work of human rights organizations in general, has evolved since
1994, and how it might continue to evolve in the future.
The ICPD Programme of Action emphasizes the need to provide women and girls
with more choices through improved access to education, health services, skill
development and employment. These goals resonate within the human rights community,
and both Amnesty International and HRW see a natural connection between their work
and the ICPD goals. As Sahgal stated, “We found ourselves working on women’s
reproductive and sexual rights issues while focusing on the traditional issues of civil and
political rights. Forced abortions, torture in hospitals, and arrests of women are just a few
examples of that work. We officially expanded our issues to include economic, social and
cultural rights in 2001 and are now working on their interdependence.”
The same type of transition has taken place within other human rights
organizations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), according to Jefferson. “The
Women’s Rights Division hasn’t always included a reproductive rights focus,” said
Jefferson. “During our work to fight against pregnancy discrimination in the workplace,
we found ourselves working to support reproductive and sexual rights for women.” Both
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch believe that the goals of ICPD can be
achieved through the strengthening and improved enforcement of international human
rights laws.
Human rights organizations, like AI and HRW, recognized the need to direct
some of their resources to women’s issues before ICPD. Many established special
projects, or widened the scope of others, to directly address the rights of women. Sahgal
and Jefferson admit, however, that much work remains within their community to
advance and protect the sexual and reproductive rights of women. Organizational
constraints and differing objectives can sometimes impede efforts to develop partnerships
with other organizations working to address women's rights, but both Sahgal and
Jefferson expressed hope that their community will continue to be welcomed at the table.
2. 2
Over the past ten years, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International
and Human Rights Watch have addressed women’s reproductive and sexual rights in a
variety of different ways. HRW has tackled such issues as forced sterilization,
reproductive rights in the workplace, the trafficking of women and girls and the impact of
domestic violence on women’s health as components of larger endeavors. They have also
advocated in support of ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of
Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), conducted an investigation into the linkages
between domestic violence, cultural attitudes and women and examined women’s
vulnerability to HIV infection in Uganda. With regard to Amnesty International’s work,
sexual and reproductive rights concerns have figured prominently in the organization’s
efforts to repeal the death penalty in Nigeria, to investigate and report on the situation of
women victims and survivors of the Rwandan genocide, to stem the increasing incidence
of rape in Burundi and in their recently launched campaign to “Stop Violence Against
Women.”
When asked why the human rights community has chosen to address such issues,
Sahgal and Jefferson had the same response — interdependence. Most advocates
understand that they cannot avoid issues related to women’s reproductive and sexual
rights. Amnesty International, according to Sahgal, is one of those organizations. Indeed,
the group’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign, originally slated to be a two-year
project, was recently extended and will now last six years. Some organizations, like
Human Rights Watch, would see their portfolios as incomplete without including
women’s reproductive and sexual rights. According to Jefferson, Human Rights Watch
sees the low status of women in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia along with the impact on
HIV-infection rates as a key factor and “catalyst” in their work in this area.
The inclusion of issues related to women’s reproductive and sexual rights has
garnered a mostly positive response from most donors and members within the human
rights community. At AI, members understand the interdependence of issues and most
have pushed for change, according to Saghal. The response has been similar at
HRWwhere, as Jefferson stated, “Everyone has been positive and supportive.”
Nevertheless, sexual and reproductive health and rights issues remain firmly on
the human rights agenda. Currently Amnesty International is devoting more attention to
rights of women in conflict and post-conflict situations, while HRW is studying the
comprehensiveness of women’s reproductive heath programs. A larger, possibly multi-
year project to examine access to reproductive health care services among minority
women and women in economically disadvantaged communities is on the horizon. HRW
is also in the process of developing a policy in support of sexual rights. AI’s longer term
plans include an in-depth study of ways to improve accountability when parallel
authorities — government and communities — put women at risk of increased violence
by failing to protect them against violent offenders. And of course the organization plans
to continue efforts to connect issues addressed in the ICPD Programme of Action with
events occurring in local communities and to document and oppose violations of
reproductive and sexual rights.
3. 3
Finally, some human rights organizations are moving towards adopting official
positions on abortion. HRW views abortion as an integral part of a woman’s right to
make her own choices about reproductive health, according to Jefferson, but the
organization has yet to adopt a formal policy statement. HRW is expected to adopt an
official policy within the year. AI, and other human rights organizations that follow their
lead, take a more nuanced position. No official position has been adopted on abortion,
however, the acceptance of the ICPD Programme of Action by AI’s membership will
allow them to focus additional resources to work against the denial and sexual and
reproductive rights.
As governments continue to strive towards achieving the goals of ICPD by 2015,
they can now count human rights organizations among the international nongovernmental
organizations actively advocating for the empowerment of women and for the protection
of their reproductive and sexual rights.
