To study the rate of decomposition of leaf and litter in nature, using bags of 3 mesh sizes. Coarse allows soil organisms including earthworms, medium restricts earthworms but allows microarthropods, fine allows microorganisms.
To know the nature of the soil is very important for gardening. In water, particles settle more quickly the bigger they are. It is possible to use this property to determine the amount of each component of the soil
Willow trees are well known for their swift rooting. The Navajo willow (Salix matsudana) is a drought resistant species that can be used for reforestation to combat desertification. One can apply the bottle reforestation method or plant rooted cuttings directly in the soil.

STEM-H in the Garden: 30 (or So) Garden Activities in 60 Minutes (or Less)Ben Capozzi
Presentation for the Southside Master Gardeners Association on “STEM-H in the Garden” for STEM Academy Teacher Training at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, VA. We relished the opportunity to share how Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Health all play a role in gardening, and the efficacy of gardening activity as a point of entry into the study of the natural world. This was also a delight as I co-presented with one of my mentors, Kathy Conner Cornell.
* I use low-res images in my uploads. Actual presentations are crisp and clear.
Growing young trees in plastic bottles instead of polybags offers significant advantages : less irrigation water needed, higher survival rates. Important step forward in the combat of drought and desertification.

Germination is a process by which seeds produce shoot and root from the endosperm. Favourable Temperature and Relative Humidity influence the germination process
Self watering planters use sub-irrigation to deliver water directly to plant roots, without any guess work. The water reservoir at the bottom of the planter allows the plant to drink at its own pace and visually shows caregivers when it is time to water with an empty reservoir. (Greenery Unlimited)

The anecic (intermediates or subsurface dwellers) and the endogeic (burrowers) earthworms create burrows in the soils. These burrows called drilospheres are a haven for microorganisms and also facilitate soil air.

Biological Symmetry is the balanced distribution of duplicate body parts or shapes. The body plans of most multi-cellular organisms exhibit some form of symmetry, either radial symmetry or bilateral symmetry. A small group of organisms do not exhibit symmetry (they are asymmetrical). Many flowers are radially symmetrical and flowering plants demonstrate symmetry of five, more frequently than any other form.
Unwanted salts present in the soil or water will make the plants more stressed and reduce the yield or complete death of the crop Sodium (Na) is not to be added for crop growth.
To proceed with the experiments discussed here, you need to know the exact directions from your place of observation. The place of observation should be a open place with level ground. Finding the north using a compass cannot be considered as very accurate as the direction of the earth’s magnetic poles are not aligned with the Earth’s rotational axis
Climate change and global warming are the most discussed debates, and energy crisis is one formidable topics. It is essential to introduce the practicality of this crisis through a simple exercise – the energy audit at school.

Iris acts like the diaphragm of a camera, dilating and constricting the pupil to allow light of differing intensities into the eye. The experiment describes how the dilation and constriction responses of one pupil are geared to the other.

Succession is the natural, orderly change in plant and animal communities that occurs at the same place over a period of time. In all communities, the composition of species changes over a period of time. Ecological succession leads to species diversity as it progresses. Secondary succession generally occurs faster than primary succession and is more likely to actually occur than latter

1. 011 SOIL POROSITY AND ROOT GROWTH
Compact soils do not support proper root growth of saplings. Hence garden
soils should be soft and not compact to permit plant growth
MATERIALS REQUIRED
3 glass or plastic tubes about 3 to 5 cm diameter and 10 to 15 cm long
Good moist garden soil (preferably loamy)
An wooded peg to compress soil
GARDEN SOIL
wooded peg
glass tubes
2. Transfer soil into all the three tubes.
Tube A, fill soil as in flower pot.
Tube B, press soil with your fingers and thumb as you fill
(moderate compaction)
Tube C, use the wooden peg to compact the soil as you fill
(heavy compaction)
Plant a seed/sapling in each
Water lightly each day and observe
A B
C
4. Observe the growth of plant in the 3 tubes
Look for the roots and leaves
Discuss the different patterns
What are your observations?
What are your conclusions?
What is the importance of soil organisms in loosening the soil?
What happens when heavy machines run on the soil?
