9. The Guardian : History
1. 1821 John Edward Taylor publishes the first Manchester Guardian on May 5 as a
newspaper. It was published weekly. Costs 7d
2. 1855 stamp duty tax is abolished meaning the Guardian can publish newspapers daily,
meaning the price decreased to 2d.
3. 1907 following the death of John Edward Taylor’s son in 1905 CP Scott buys the
Guardian. He becomes both owner and editor.
4. 1919 On 4 July The Guardian Weekly ia launched to provide a compact weekly edition of
the newspaper.
5. 1936 ownership of the guardian is transferred to a trust. The Scott trust ensures the
independence of the newspaper and continues the journalistic principles of CP Scott.
6. 1953 On June 3rd the day after Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, Davis Low’s ‘Morning
After’ cartoon appeared in the guardian. The cartoon sparked controversy and many
letters from readers.
7. 1988 The Guardian has a radical redesign, splitting the newspaper into two sections
and introducing a new masthead, An international edition is launched in Europe.
8. 2003 Life, a new Thursday science and technology supplement, launched. A daily Media
Business page was introduced.
10. Political persuasion- The Guardian
● The paper’s readership is generally on the mainstream left of British
political opinion: a MORI poll which was taken between April and June 2000
showed that 80 percent of Guardian readers were Labour party voters.
● It is generally on the mainstream left of British political opinion. The
newspaper’s reputation for liberal and left wing has lead to readers
mainly being left leaning or being people who strongly agree with
politically correct tendencies.
● Although the paper is often considered to be linked to the Labour Party,
three of The Guardians four leader writers joined the more centrist Social
Democratic Party on its foundation in 1981.

years. As more and more people are using the internet website instead of
reading the regular paper, as it is more convenient and easier to access.
Additionally, there are now many other newspapers who also have online feeds
which people can also keep up to date with instead of needing to buy the
paper.
Using the internet is also cheaper and quicker meaning it is the preferred way
of accessing the Daily News.

clearly displayed at the top
of the newspaper.
Also the top left corner
shows the price of the
newspaper and the date at
which this daily newspaper
has been published.

is clearly displayed on the
left hand side of the main
image. They use the least
amount of words as possible as
they can fit in as much
information of the front cover
as possible.

that the information displayed
on the front is about her.
They use an close up shot to

Additionally, the name of the
newspaper is clearly displayed
on the top of every newspaper
to encourage regular buyers of
