4. Although some of its headlines and stories could be considered 'reactionary' and
traditionalist, the Daily Star has few articles on politics, and has rarely shown clear
support for any specific party or leader. However, in the run-up to the 2010 general
election, the newspaper printed several articles which hinted that it wanted to see Labour
and Gordon Brown voted out of power, while at the same time offering no explicit support
for the Conservatives or their leader David Cameron, who ultimately formed a coalition
government with the Liberal Democrats
In 2014 ahead of the Scottish Independence Referendum the Scottish edition named the
"Daily Star of Scotland" printed articles in support of the "Better Together" Campaign
being a strong supporter of a "No" vote. They told their readers to vote "No" (to
independence) in the referendum.
Political Persuasion
5. Higher number of men readers than female
(most likely due to the sexual images of women
in The Daily Star) 2.8 million men per month
Most readers are adults over 35
Popularity and
Readership in the UK
6. Due to the representation of The Daily Star’s articles and covers, the
target audience is the male working class.
This is also due to the provocative images of (fake looking) women
and very irrelevant cover stories most of the time,
There is not intellectual language and it is an easy read that both
covers relevant worldwide news and celebrity coverage.
Target Audience
7. The Daily Star unlike other papers
have used a more sinister looking
picture of the mass murderer Stephen
Paddock
They also use hyperbole to make more
readers attracted to their stories.
Eg. “HIT by air firm axe”
Metaphor ‘hit’
On every front cover the
Daily Star mention how
they are 20p cheaper than
The Sun in order to get
more sales.
They use a devastating
picture of the
“massacre” in order to
attract readers and
make them more
curious
Left side column contrasts with
devastating head story as shows
less traumatic news and the header
is seen as more tacky and relevant
to people’s everyday lives.
Big title of
daily star
contrasts with
small print of
the stories
Around 5
stories on
each front
cover
9. History of the Financial Times
-The FT was launched as the London Financial Guide on 10 January 1888
- Pearson bought the paper in 1957

UK, in Frank.
-In 1997 the FT launched a U.S edition, printed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles,
San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta etc...
10. Political Persuasion
● The FT advocates the free market and is in favour of globalisation
● It has supported the UK Labour Party in the past
● The FT editorial supports the European Union in terms of a common economic
market
● The FT was firmly opposed to the Iraq war and opposes political integration
● In the U.S presidential election in 2008 the supported Obama and then favoured
him again in 2012.
● In the 2017 UK general election the financial times backed the Conservative
Party
11. Popularity of readership
● The Financial Times has an average daily readership of 2.2 million people worldwide
● FT.com has 4.5 million registered users and over 285,000 digital subscribers, as well as
600,000 paying users
● FT Chinese has more than 1.7 million registered users
● In October 2013 the combined paid print and digital circulation of the FT reached nearly
629,00 copies, the highest circulation in its 125 years History.
12. Target Audience
The FT targets businessmen and economist to expand their knowledge on the
current affairs, the paper is not generally read by young teenagers due to the
more advanced terminology, however, many students who study economics
find it very useful.
13. Front Page of Financial Times
Big Text for the main stories
Big ‘catchy’ picture to bring
attention to the paper
There are two stories on the
front page and one of them is a
hard story talks about the Las
Vegas massacre and the other
is a soft/medium-hard story talks
about the Monarch Airline
failing.
14. Language used
The FT uses Hyperbole in order to get people’s attention
Also, the different sizing of the titles and the size of image is used to make the front page more
interesting and catchy.
The size of the image of the massacre in Las Vegas is placed in the centre of the magazine and it
takes up a large amount of the paper as it’s one of the most important stories of the day.
15. Coverage of the same story, how are they different?
The Daily Star has a bigger more
central title which stands out more,
also it has some facts under it to
make the paper more intriguing. In
addition, the Daily star is a tabloid
and is more colourful and ‘catchy’
than the FT. However, the FT looks
more educational and professional
so people might want to read
something more sophisticated.
