2. Balance & well-being
YOP is unique in that it uses a specific range of line drawings to
promote balance and well-being. As with yoga, regular practice
encourages the connection between body and mind: the hand must
work with the eye; attention is focused on the present moment;
breath connects body and mind in harmony.
3. Change in perception
By practising straight and curved lines in four directions, different
patterns create different effects in each person: harmonising and
meditative or challenging and enlivening. Drawings can be used to
create a desirable mood, to develop skills or simply for enjoyment.

5. Movement on paper
Practicing YOP has many benefits for individuals and groups, but at
its most fundamental level, it’s about experiencing movement on
paper, and although the outputs can serve as a record of personal
progression, the outcome is less important.
6. Unusual & liberating
Somatic experiencing is at the very heart of this practice which is
why its uses vary. Reflection on the effect of drawing offers an
opportunity to develop a vocabulary of feelings, sensations and
imaginations without a specific story or an event. This is quite
unusual and can be in itself a liberating experience.
7.
8. Supportive &
therapeutic
YOP can also help develop and
encourage the following qualities
and skills...
● Flexibility in thinking
● Mindfulness
● Spatial awareness
● Self reflection
● Somatic experiencing
● Changes perception of colour, shape
and natural forms (beauty)
● Inner calm and feeling sense of balance
● Self motivation
● Good hand eye coordination
● Concentration and focus
● Sociable and trust building to share
experiences
● Joy, laughter and love
9. Getting started
Yoopers practice drawing the four directions and line attributes,
whilst at the same time assessing their somatic experience. This
usually takes several sessions depending on the duration and
participation level. After the initial drawing phase, sessions can then
be tailored to meet the individual or group needs.
