SEVEN AGES OF MAN
TOPIC 1
William Shakespeare
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
 Was born on April 26, 1564
and died on April 23, 1616
 He was an English poet,
playwright and an actor
 He was regarded as the
greatest writer in the
English language and
world’s pre-eminent
dramatist
 He is often called England’s
National poet.
 Approximately he wrote 39
play, 154 sonnets, and 2
long narrative poems
 His plays have been
translated into every major
living language and are
performed more often than
those of any other
playwright.
 At the age of 18, he
married Anne Hathaway
with whom he had three
children: Susanna and twins
Hamnet and Judith.
 Some time between 1585-
1592, he began a successful
career in London as an
actor, writer, and part-
owner of a playing
company.
 At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to
have retired to Stratford, where he
died three years later.
 William Shakespeare was the son
of John Shakespeare, an alderman and
a successful glover (glove-maker)
originally from Snitterfield, and Mary
Arden, the daughter of an affluent
landowning farmer. He was the third of
eight children, and the eldest surviving
son.
“All the world’s a stage” is the
phrase that begins a monologue
from William Shakespeare’s “As
You Like It” spoken by
melancholy Jacques in Act II
Scene VII
1.Mewling – crying
2.Puking – to empty what is in
your stomach through your
mouth
3.Whining – to complain in an
annoying way
4.Satchel – small bag
5. Woeful – very sad
6. Spectacle – a pair of lenses
set into a frame and worn
over the eyes
7. Oblivion – forgetfulness
8. Sans - without
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to
his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation.
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
The Seven Ages of Man’ is taken from William
Shakespeare’s famous play, ‘As You Like It’ .
This world is just like a stage of a theatre.
All persons being players are given different
roles. Every individual plays a definite role
during his life, which is consists of seven
parts or acts.
1. Infancy
 The first and primary act of every human being is
the stage of infancy, when he enters in this world
and makes his exist in this stage of world as a
baby.
 He makes his presence felt by crying at the top of
his voice and many a times vomiting any food or
drink that is repulsive, at the nursing arms of his
mother.
 This period normally last till four years of age.
2. Schoolboy
The second stage is the ‘whining’
schoolboy where he learns to utter a
plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound,
as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint.
In the beginning he does not like going to
school but gradually his thinking changes.
When time passes onwards the schoolboy
transformed into a youngster.
3. Lover
The third stage is his early youth, the peak
of love and high romance .
He tries to express feelings through song .
He writes a song or poem expressing the
pains of unfulfilled love and is written to
celebrate the beauty of his mistress.
4. Soldier
 The fourth stage is that of a soldier where
life if full of obligations, commitments,
compliances, oaths and vows.
His beard is like a leopard or panther.
He endlessly fights for his honor, a full
presence of mind which is sudden and
quick in quarrel and a heart to maintain a
dignified reputation.
5. Adulthood/Justice
 The fifth stage is the adult-hood where a
man tries to live a fair and justified life.
His body develops as he gets matured.
Practically, his is a blend of custom,
morality, religion, and education.
The visible authority can be well located in
him.
He acts like the ruler, and pass a judgment
on any aspects of life.
6. Middle Age
 In this stage he has acquired wisdom
through the many experiences he has had in
life.
He has reached a stage where he has gained
prosperity and social status.
He becomes very attentive of his looks and
begins to enjoy the finer things of life.
The man grows older and becomes weak.
7. Old Age
 The last stage is the old-age where
he enters his second childhood, at
this stage man again behaves like a
child.
He begins to lose his charm — both
physical and mental.
This stage is the worst of the all stages as
man loses all of his senses and strength and
his life truly becomes dependant on others.
He is without everything; without teeth,
eyes and taste.
His memory becomes weaken and five senses
start malfunctioning and finally he departs
from the world leaving behind a story full of
events.
After discussing the 7 stages of man, assess yourself
on what stage do you belong and state your reason.
